I just happen to have a legit copy lying around and tried it, but the install of the Genuine Advantage still took place and it wanted to check. I closed out and tried it again, this time hitting the enter button a couple times. I think it worked, but it’s hard to tell, being a legit copy. Some people don’t even bother updating and I wonder if you really have to if you have firewall.

Humm... This will promptly be removed from the JavaScript code if it's not needed anymore. This was probably introduced as "internal feature" to help internal TESTS and dev. to be done in an efficient way.

But, if Microsoft use this for other purpose, we might be very lucky!

If the new Windows Update check integrity only once or everytime it runs?

Simple solution to this little problem.

WUS or SUS. Install this on a computer with a legit version of Windows on it, or a VLK styled Windows. Download to one computer, then distribute through a WUS or SUS service off your computer. Not a big deal.

Your clients of your WUS/SUS don't need to validate, only the one downloading the patches.

I have no idea what you are talking about... sorry. I have 3 computers at home 1 xp and 2 xp pro connected through a DSL internet gateway. Now the pro are being rejected for updates. tried the javascript thing and it doesn't work.... what, if any can be done?

I found a working solution for WinXP/IE6.0

You install the "WGA update" from Windows Update, when the WGA is installed it should reject your atempt to update...

Open regedit and set these 2 strings :

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700}]
"Version"="*"
"Flags"=dword:00000001

Now Windows Update works!

There is an easier way to do this:

Go to Internet Options in IE. Click on the Programs tab and select Manage Add-ons. Scroll down to Windows Genuine Advantage and disable it. You'll get your updates just fine.

That doesn't work... I've tried it. It simply prompted me to re-download the tool and then it ran on it's own anyway.

I certainly can't argue with that. :lol: :lol: :lol: Damn cheapskates.

Though I do know that some (though very rare) people do this not because they haven't paid, but because they hate M$'s big-brother system. There are times when even I've been tempted to crack because of all of these darn annoying anti-piracy layers these days. (Not just M$.)

Having a legit copy of XP is pain in the ass. I upgrade my computer at least 4 time in 1 year, not mentionning that I try many type of PCI card, end up with messed OS and drives base at least once in a month, reinstalling at least every month. 3 install in one week can happen.. even if it is not what I intended first. When I install XP, I install it just like I would not have to reinstall it soon. but.. sometime I have too.

I just build a nice system 1 month ago, and someone want to buy it. I'll sell it and try another brand of board. So, activating sometime twice in one month, reinstalling 4-5 times in one years is not really my favorite time. Either it is an otomated activation or I talk with someone, which is boring. I could now have lot of friend at MS if I had to call everytime I reinstalled my XP. See, installing take less than 40 minutes.. You really think I'll spend more than 30 minutes trying to fix something that went wrong??? Everything is up to date on my HDD and i don't have to run for every apps I have on my machine.. It just sit there somewhere waiting for the next reinstall.

I sometime try to replicate users errors to understand what went wrong, and how to fix it. You hear it ok.. I mess up my computer sometime with apps others had and that messed on their system trying to find a fix. Yes, I build/fix computer for other. No, I don't sell pirated XP. My legit copy is..well, somewhere with other old installation CD from various motherboard..

Anyway, I don't use it anymore... I have a slipstreamed SP2 XP.

So, why using a version of XP that don't need validating? More pratical for me, can try winupdate in case that one update could have messed up somebody else computer I have to fix. Media player one time would not play nice with some codec on a system I had to fix... Messed up mine, had to get media player more than 3 time in a short lap of time so that mean fresh install and updating too often.

Why not linux? Who tell you I don't have or tried linux? But, imposing linux to a novice as a fix would not help me to keep my customers..

I dont even see the point in updating - theres always another way round that hackers can use somehow

As for updates i still do em but via Autopatcher XP (all the patches and extras in one file, one install and one restart after a reinstall).

Weird, it's worked for me every time. Also works for a co-worker. I disable that plugin then get right in to the MS updates page without that annoying "verifying" step.

I'm not sure why it would prompt to redownload if it's just disabled. It should only do that if you uninstall it, which is not what I mentioned to do.[/quote]

Very frustrated at the moment as I had purchased a copy of XP on Ebay SPECIFICALLY so I could get legal on this, and now find out that the CD was part of some "volume discount" deal and my key is toast.

I received good news this morning. I had sent an e-mail to M$ licensing, then called their 800 number. The person I spoke to apparently didn't try very hard to help, but the gal who replied to my e-mail sent me a link and POOF it all worked. What a freaking relief.
