And unlike Nintendo, SEGA was in a rough financial state when they dropped out of the hardware business. Nintendo is still a healthy company with billions of dollars on hand, and they can clearly afford to continue making hardware.

Nintendo is getting a lot of flak from their shareholders right now for under-performing, they're not that far off from the Sega situation right now. If the NX isn't a big hit they'll likely have no choice. The only reason the Wii U exists is that the Wii was such a big hit, now they're back where they were with the GameCube again.

Zelda is a Skyrim competitor? Did I really just read that? :heink:

lol That obviously worked for Sega! http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/05/for-first-time-ever-sega-wont-have-a-booth-at-e3/

People don't buy nintendo systems for 3rd party games, they buy them for 1st party games. Nintendo's entire history for every one of their consoles has been the same handful of franchises since NES days. Not knocking it, its reality. I think there are enough people who want those titles to support their lower cost systems going into the future.

Handful? They have published something like over a 100 unique franchises*, and many in the recent years. They tend to re-use their characters a lot, doesn't mean the games are all the same. Their mistake with the Wii U was either launching it 3 years late, or making it about 1/3rd of the power it should have been (to have 3rd party support).

Nintendo should just pull a Sega and give up the hardware business entirely. Their consoles are pretty much just a niche market now. If they spent their time converting legacy titles to Android and iOS like Mario 64, all the older Mario games, and all the Zelda games, you know how much money they could make off that alone?

Nintendo is far from being in trouble. Its handheld has gone uncontested since the first version released. Not to mention the many franchises that it has exclusively in house. Sega on the other hand had nothing to fall back on at all and are now doing even worse and it would not surprise me if they stop making games ported to the west soon such as how they shelved Phantasy Star Online 2.

Nintendo has always done its own thing. And they take big chances which some times pays off and some times they don't. The wii is a perfect example of when they hit the right mark. So they tried a new controller with the wii u which admittedly is doing horrible at the moment. But they have yet to release any of their big time franchises on it as well. A new Metroid game a legend of zelda would help push them a bit more.

Nintendo will always have a following and a fan base to their consoles/handhelds. They market to every one and try to put out games that appeal to all ages. And any one with kids will tell you that they'd prefer to have their children playing nintendo games. The other 2 systems market very few games aimed at kids or for kids. Without nintendo what games would younger kids start out on? Halo? Doom? Call of duty? Nah i think nintendo just need to learn to beef up their next system and go back to basics controller wise third party games are more easily ported over. They do that and you would see a huge change.

Also people try not to forget that it was nintendo that helped pick up the pieces after the gaming crash back in the day. Without nintendo consoles may not even still be around today.

Look I say this as someone who grew up on NES / SNES / N64 - these games that made these systems as well as Nintendo are classics, there's absolutely no contest. But look at the nostalgia market - there's an absolutely huge market for that among people my age. They'd be stupid not to exploit that.

Nintendo did not hit really hard with the Wii U, it's true it is a failure. But like said, that does not mean the next thing will be a hit. For Nintendo home consoles the trend seems to be every other. I'm not sure where NX is going but hopefully is will be something good and won't be named "Wii Z". In all honesty, if Nintendo had not names it the "Wii U" their sales would be much higher.

That would be amazing, no more console exclusives. I wish that had happened.

Did you not read what i had written? There would be no consoles if nintendo had not stepped in when it did. And gaming would have been crushed. Why? The only choice for gaming would have been pc gaming for many years. And in case you did not know pc's were extremely pricey back in the day especially gaming pc's. Meaning few could afford them and as such very few games would be made so fewer publishers and fewer game creators. Which means many if not all the games you loved up until the 2000's would not exist at all.

Yes they would and they do. Many of the older games are in their store. Also many 64 games have been ported to the 3ds so you can play them on the go. I would just love for them to create a true next gen controller that is more basic like a dual shock or xbox pad controller and forget the gimmicks on released hardware. Now if they want to create a different style controller later down the road as an add in? That be fine. They do that and beef up their hardware and release a zelda a mario and a metroid game on it at launch? They couldn't keep it in stock. But nintendo likes to do its own thing. So lets hope this was just an expensive learning experience for them.
