Starting with my specs I have a b450 Tomahawk Max for my motherboard and a 5700xt GPU. GPU will be relevant later.
I've been having this issue forever I think. My audio works perfectly fine if I use my monitor speakers or plug a device into the back of my monitor's audio jack. No issues there at all.
The issue arises when I try to use my motherboard's audio. Plugging headphones, speakers, etc. into the correct jacks (or any for that matter) results in complete silence. Before mentioning it, I have the correct output set in Windows.
As you can see above, I have my motherboard's speakers set as default and it shows sound being played properly. Yet no matter what device or jack I use I get no audio. The "CAD Audio" speakers are from my USB mic. Not sure why it has a device listed there but it does, though I'm very confident it's not the cause for this. Even if there was some kind of conflict in the Windows side of things, I've gone and disabled every output device except for my motherboard audio (Realtek(R) Audio), and it still doesn't work.
When I plug something into one of my motherboard jacks I get a notification through the Realtek Audio Console that something was plugged in and asking me what kind of device it was (Line In, Headphone, Speaker, etc). Opening Realtek Audio Console will show the exact jack my device is plugged into, so the fact everything works fine up to there makes me write out any possible hardware issue.
My theory is it has to do with my GPU and audio through HDMI. It doesn't really make sense that nothing works through my motherboard but works flawlessly and without issue through my monitor. I've tried muting my monitor and turning it off to see if it would work but I still get no audio. Despite that I still suspect the culprit lies somewhere with the "AMD High Definition Audio Device" (Not pictured above). I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be used for audio through HDMI but I've never used it, nor gotten it to work. When I use my monitor speakers I just set my monitor itself as default in the Windows Sound settings. Setting the AMD Audio Device as default doesn't do anything as far as I can tell.
The closest I've gotten to solving this is upon disabling the AMD High Definition Audio Device I started getting a very subtle high pitched whine in my headphones when plugged into the Line In jack of my motherboard. This sound only happens when plugged into that specific jack, but re-enabling the AMD Audio Device doesn't seem to make it go away. It's pretty likely it was there the whole time and it didn't have anything to do with disabling the AMD Audio Device, but then again it's pretty noticeable and I think I would have noticed it before.
I'm completely lost. At the end of the day this isn't a huge issue because I can just plug my speakers through my monitor, but I really shouldn't have to do that. The fact something I just bought isn't working properly and I can't fix it is bothering me more than anything. I've been wanting to play my Switch on my monitor because my TV is in a really inconvenient location, but I can't do that without losing my PC's audio upon switching inputs, which makes it impossible to play Switch games with people over Discord.
Does anyone have any idea on where to go from here? Any help is appreciated and I'd be glad to add any more information upon request.
