After becoming more familiar with XP, I found myself paranoid about keeping
my computer security up. Consequently, I ended up messing around with some
of the policy settings on my XP Pro computer and basically locked myself out
by not allowing any user to log on "interactively." In order to get the
files off of my computer I did a parallel installation of XP Home (I can't
seem to locate my original XP Pro CD that shipped with my Dell) in a seperate
folder within the same root directory. While this gave me the ability to
view and transfer all of my documents into the new installation, I was unable
to view or open a folder containing a couple grand in program installation
files because I had set the folder attributes to "read only" while acting as
an administrator in the prior, and now, messed-up installation of XP Pro.
Now I don't know how I'm going to get all of those program files because I
keep getting the "Access Denied" error when I try to do anything with them
from the parallel install.
I've tried clearing the read only attributes from the XP Home
installation in all modes, but the settings won't seem to stick. I have
litterally spent days trying to figure this out, but I'm at my witts end. I
would greatly appreciate any advice or direction from a XP guru.
