Can anyone help me out:--
Out of 2 HDDs, I dont have any problem with my 40 GB HD
which is perfectly ok & getting formatted from within
windows-ME and DOS(using format command) as well.. But my
problem is with the 20 GB HD which is getting formatted
only from within windows but not in DOS.. My question is,
if the 40 GB HD can be formatted in DOS using format
command then why wont the 20 GB HD be formatted the same
way??? and whats the remedy???
And please let me know if possible:What is the full form
of IDE???
Thanks in advance...

What file system was previously used to format the 20GB?

It's possible the file system used to format the 20gig is one that dos can't
see. In that case you have to fdisk first, then format it.

It would appear that the 40gb HDD is FAT32 and the 20gb is NTFS.. Win 98
startup diskettes will not see NTFS drives.. try using the FDISK function
first and see if you can remove the non-dos partition..

The problem is that DOS can't read NTFS therefore you can't format the drive
from DOS until you remove NTFS. To do that run FDISK or another partitioning
program. If you use FDISK then select the option to Delete Partitions. Next
select the option to Delete Non-DOS partitions. Get rid of the partition
listed as that will be the NTFS partition. Once it is removed you can use
Create Partitions. Create a Primary Partition or Logical Partition as you
wish. Reboot and you will be able to run the Format command.

One point to add. After you run FDISK, remove and recreate a partition you
must set the partition you want to format as Active. You must quit FDISK by
pressing ESC. Then you must reboot the computer before you try running the
format command. If you don't set the partition you ant to format as Active
and if you don't reboot you will run into trouble.

I've already done exactly what u've said..Not once but as
many as 3 times... But still the problem persists with the
20GB HD... where as no problem whatsoever with the 40GB
HD..
NB- I've treated both the HD in the same way...
Please advice...

Try a low level format on the drive and then see if you can partition and
format it.
