All that could be based off the HDMI connection which does have audio capabilities. Unfortunately, I cannot easily test this as my HTPC (my only system with an HDMI output) does not have a speakerless connection, but I do suspect that is the cause.

Disconnect the speakers from an amplifier/receiver and you can still adjust the volume.

My recommendation is to look over the specs for your display and verify whether or not it actually has speakers. If it does, then there is an issue. If not, then what you're seeing is just a symptom of HDMI connected to a display without speakers.

I got tricked into thinking I might have speakers by the appearance of the LG ULTRAWIDE (AMD High Definition Audio Device) display option in my sound settings and the on board tools in the screen seems to support volume. I updated drivers and switch over from DVI to HDMI... all no go... then read this thread and checked here... https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-34UM61-P-ultrawide-monitor

Yup, no speakers. You'd think they would disable volume controls without the speakers connected.

However, the headphone jack on the back of the monitor does function as a pass through, hence the reason for the volume controls.
