Hi everyone. I'm thinking about getting a i5 3570 in my homebuild and will be looking at overclocking but from what I've heard, you need a decent cooler to get a good result from the 3570. I am going to be using air cooling only so have got a case with a 200mm fan at the front and 120mm on the back with a space to add another 200mm fan on top and the cooler I'm thinking about buying is the noctua NH-D14. Like I've mentioned, I shall be overclocking it and was hoping to hit 4.5ghz with it. The question is, will this cooler be able to do the job?

If anyone has a similar setup to this, or has some advice on this. Please feel free to share.

Also, any recommendations on a mobo that would be able to handle it as well. I shall be pairing it with a gtx670.

Ehm, you mean i5 3570 "K" version yes, noctua is best cooler can squeeze upto 4.6ghz, but try to overclock lesser 4.3GHz is enough, for motherboard get the ASUS p8Z77 vpro gen3.
GTX 670 is best choose.

I would get MOBO:ASUS P8Z77-V LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131820#top $189.99

CPU:Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K

and yes the NH-D14 would keep your temps in check 4.5GHZ the NH-D14 laughs at that also you can't overclock the i5 3570 you want the i5 3570K and trust me the Hyper 212 evo ain't even on NH-D14 level

Yeah, I did mean the K version. I'll have a look at the motherboard as well. Cheers for the advice on the cooler.

Here what i suggest any of these three motherboards take your pick all are solid and offer lots of future expandability if you get a good chip these boards OC very well on it's best not to skimp on your motherboard trust me you will thank yourself in the long run MOBO:ASUS P8Z77-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Cool. So with the clock set for 4.3-4.5ghz running an overclocked GTX 670 on the asus p8z77 v lk, will I be able to get the best I can get out of games like battlefield 3 and crysis 2. Do you think they will run at full whack.

You need to be aware that air cooling is dependent on a number of factors: ambient room temperature and the ability of the system to remove the heated air from the interior of the case and the overall air flow of the case/system. The Noc14 is one of the best (got one myself). The success of your OC as far as temps are concerned does depend on these main factors. The difference between a cpu OC of 4.2 and 4.5 is meaningless in terms of game performance but is significant in terms of temperature control.

Thanks for the advice. After reading the reviews on the NH-D14, it seemed like a must have for the ivy bridge. Also hoping that the 200mm front and top fans will be enough with a 120mm at the back. May even be able to put one on the side as well.
As for overclocking, I'm not looking to show off how high I can get the clocks. I would rather show off how good the games look that I'm running on it.

Well that's it then. Have just purchased the noctua NH d14 for £55 from ebuyer. And so it begins, the path to my gaming pc. I'm aiming to have All parts purchased and the system built within 6 weeks. Wis me luck.

Yes, but thats if you have at least 6gb of DDR3 ram :).

You can max games out with i5 at stock speed but overclock is nice. GTX 670 is the best bang for your buck right now and is fantastic.

Good luck with your PC :).

Thanks. I've changed a few things from my original choices and I think I'm pretty much settled on this list.

I've already purchased the cooler. I've selected the asrock mobo because it is well within budget and it will do what I want. I've got 8gb ram as well.

The one concern I have now is will I need to get low profile ram so the cooler has enough room and doesn't infringe on the ram.

Apart from that, what do you think? Will it play the latest and greates games at there top settings? Remember, I will be overclocking to give it that lil bit extra.

The only thing here I might change is the PSU. The Corsair is not a bad unit but some others will give better voltage regulation and efficiency. I do not know the dollar conversion so this may be your best bang for the buck (hmmm pound).

Do you have any recommendations then?

It will play all current games on ultra/max settings the NH-D14 you can actually fit two sticks of ripjaws under but not corsair dominator or corsair vengeance which is rather odd to me but it's the facts of the matter you can look here on Noctua site as to which ram is compatible they provide a chat http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CEwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnoctua.at%2Fmain.php%3Fshow%3Dcompatibility_ram_gen%26products_id%3D34%26lng%3Den&ei=w6v1T_6LLcvo2gXvsI2EBw&usg=AFQjCNG3BVsiSf2GmyBeXJ4IBbvK_HCuOQ&sig2=PKpDdLh1V1YiT1iWTxtkog personally i would rather be safe than sorry and just get some low profile ram any of these would do if you decide to go that route RAM:G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231546#top anyway good luck!BTW nice build looks like it's going to be a kick ass mid high end gaming beast congrats! 😉

Just FYI, my 3570K at 3.8GHz with Turbo on stays under 100% CPU utilization in BF3 multiplayer on Ultra. You certainly *can* OC higher but at this time it doesn't buy you anything.

Also, I got mine to 4.4GHz stable with a $35 Evo.

Happy gaming!

Thanks. That's what i was hoping for. I had originally picked the low profile corsair but weren't 100% on it. May go back to that now as I think the price is pretty much the same.
I'm now trying to decide if 650w PSU will be enough for when I put another gtx670 in there in a years time.

Well most say it will be and i seen so many different tests and sites say different things that even if it could so what pushing it pretty close i would just go with a SeaSonic X750 or XFX PRO750W all of which are Seasonic made anyway lol but the XFX is Semi-Modular so may be a deal breaker for some

Cool, I'll check out prices and try to stick to budget (sort of ). I started off with a £800 budget which has had another £100 added on already(the fiancé don't know that though).
The system has changed a lot from the setup I had, which is great because I'm gonna have a much better system for it so thanks for all the advice. Keep it coming though because I feel like I'm almost there with it.
