I have had my ASUS G73JW for just over three months.

Spec:
Intel i7 Q740
16 GB DDR2 Memory
nVidia 460M 1.5 GB Memory
OCZ 160 GB SSD

Secondary Drive: Seagate 500GB 7200RPM

Until the past week it usually idled at high 50-54 whether I had applications like after effects, premiere, or Photoshop running, but after a project in after effects around a week ago it is half of the time just sitting around doing nothing and jumps up to 71 degrees.

Again this is just sitting around doing nothing or browsing the web. Again it's not always constant but it happens off and on almost every-time my notebook is on.

Is there anything I can do to diagnose this or just send it in and say it idles high?

Yeah! Overheating issues on G73Jh are normally related to the GPU, not the CPU... and even so, they're rare. Send it in or take it apart and check the coolers... if you live in a dusty area, any laptop cooler tends to get clogged quickly.

My friend owns G73Jh and it never overheats like this anywhere... so you have some problem there. BTW - 16 GB DDR *2* memory? I highly doubt that =)

lol typed that incorrectly:
Ram: 16,384MB (16GB) DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (4x4GB)

Well then I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Just curious what does your friends CPU and GPU usually idle at?

I'll ask him later this evening, I don't know exact temperatures =) But surely not too much, as the laptop stays quite cool to the touch even in the most demanding games and applications... Definitely not 60-70, I'd say. Also, check your processes... maybe some background nonsense is eating up the resources.

Just don't give up, I've heard of a lot of different issues with G73 (just like with any other computer), but after you set everything straight, it's just too good to be true.

Did you checked in your task manager that nothing was running in the background ?
You may not be doing anything and it is a high temps but their might be something hidden running task.
Check your processes and your cpu usage.

So here are some images of the applications, processes, and temps.

My temps dropped after I turned off an HD video but later just browsing the internet it went back up. The last few are later in the day when again I was just browsing the internet and playing a music.

Any ideas?

Oh, I see a problem! WHY do you have SEVEN instances of Chrome running???

That's exactly why "just browsing the web" overheats it!

Or is it normal for Chrome? 😀 I don't know, 'cause I use Firefox 4.

Anyway, it appears that the problem is in your processes.
