hi,
for linux problem (driver missing) i'd like to buy a video nvidia card.
I don't use games but i don't want a very very bad video card
A not expensive (114e) card is gainward fx 5600xt 128mb DVI-tv 64B
Do you thnk is it so bad?
I think is better than ATI RADEON 9600SE (89e),right?

The XT might beat out the 9600SE, but not a regular 9600/Pro. You're
much better off springing for a 5900XT or get the 5700U with GDDR3 RAM.
The 5700 is a core revision with much better yields, clockspeeds, and
heat dissipation. And the DDR3 RAM has overall better throughput.

You're looking at around 150.00 -ish USD. Overall any FX or even GF3/4
based card is more than enough for basic OpenGL apps in Linux and even
professional OpenGL applications like CAD/CAE/CAM and visualization.

Since you're not a gamer another aspect to consider is the 2d quality.
Previously manufacturers were able to choose their own components,
sometimes low quality ones (like cheap RF filters) in card designs.
NVidia since the FX has started a QC process to ensure they're all
manufactured to a certain degree of quality components. So if you get
anything older (like a very early FX 5200/5600 or GF3/4), make sure it's
got a good RAMDAC and 2d filters. Leadtek is excellent for this.
They're on par with Matrox IMO.

It's better than a 9600SE. The 5600XT is 128bit memory, while the 9600SE is
64bit. This cuts bandwidth in half.
