yer if the yields at 4%, then ATI would be charging a lot more money for their 5000 series cards, 40 % sounds a more accurate figure.

I've got a solution for Nvidia:

Bundle their Fermi cards with a free demo of 3D Porn. Hot Fermi + 3D Porn yields more sales.

[citation][nom]turboflame[/nom]That's the joke.[/citation]

Sorry, broken humor/sarcasm detector. But in my defense, look at how many people are commenting as if the 4% figure is accurate...

lies lies, and more lies,

for all you nvidia loving fools who want jen sungs tool just as much as thier next video card, yes i expect double the negative reviews atleast on this post, you guys should be ashamed, nvidia is full of shiatza, here are some links for those thumb downers to choke on other than green coloured male genitalia, . .

50%, 40%, that was as of november, do the quick math seriously, 4% if amd shipped 2 million already that would mean the scrapped roughly 50 million chips, rediculous, nvidia couldnt tell the truth if god was sitting front row in one of thier press conferences.

for every thumb down i get due too an nvidia fans feelings being hurt thier are 10 that enjoy being lied to, and 100 wishing they were a lemming.

get your thumbs down off my posts and back up your nose from whence they came.

for all those who have stock in nvidia which will fall significantly over the next few years, once global foundries starts fabbing gpu's nvidia will be a customer of amd, nvidia has wasted alot of money in some dead end areas so far and is blatantly lieing thier facecs off to keep stock prices from plummiting, get with reality.

[citation][nom]yang[/nom]out of 100 chips they make, 4% are up to the specification[/citation]
You could also say that out of 9 chips they make, 4% are up to the specification.

Although the article doesn't say it, I would imagine that the 4% yield for ATI 5800 series was when they first started producing the chip. I would bet that yields get better as time goes on and kinks are worked out, otherwise it would be impossible to make a profit at 4% yield over the life of that particular chip production.

TUAN!

You're being called to the reception! Well, actually, you're being called here by a whole lot of us! IF AMD's yields were at 4% it wouldn't be economically feasible!

It's 40%, please correct it.

[citation][nom]jjchmiel78[/nom]CES Show Vendors were stating how hot the cards ran. It was mentioned here and what people are referring to when they say how hot they are.[/citation]

I saw those too, but until we have something a bit more concrete to base any concerns on we dont know that heat is even is a problem.. so saying now that they need to do something about it is premature.

i see it like this when nvidia releases their so called supercard ati will just lower the price and in the process pimp slap nvidia across the face.

sorry my dear red nose n00b - here is only one idiot - and thats you.
i know that atifankids hate Nvidia - hey,but its not football or oany other team sport?
and if some one needs get reality - ITS YOU.Go,see your doctor, coz you obviously have some mental problems.
Its sad how idiots like you even aloud to sign here - should be IQ test first.
Im not green, not red (but i prefer Nv than ati - profesional reason) - but you my dear n00b have no business here - go outside, you will be surprised what you gonna see 😀
(From today im gonna realy hate ati fankids)

I couldn't wait. I just ordered a 5770. The heat and power consumption was the deciding factor for me. I am very confident that the price point will be much higher as well.

[citation][nom]bk420[/nom]Becuase that piece of junk will be outdated 1.5X by the Fermi...that's why, duh![/citation]

Wow, too much confidence with the Fermi huh? I hope you won't eat your words by the time Fermi rolls out (hopefully that will come within my lifetime).

@Author: Epic fail on your part. Try to check your post regularly to recognize your invalid info/assumptions. Your making a fuss out of here by posting an erroneous figure like that 4%. Not everyone who reads your article knows the real thing.

Jeez, why all the hate for Nvidia...

(1) Both Nvidia and ATI are profit making entities, neither of which is morally superior to the other. Before 5xxx, when Nvidia was holding market dominance, ATI was forced to sell its 4xxx cards at competitive prices in order to remain in the market. So ATI wasn't being "nicer" to the buyers; it merely was trying to survive. In fact, now that ATI is having monopoly in dx11 cards, ATI has been steadily increasing the prices of its 5xxx cards. We should be glad that Fermi is coming out soon, so that the prices of dx11 cards will be stable and reasonable. Fermi's arrival will benefit buyers of Geforce as well as buyers of Radeon. Remember that!

(2) Without the past innovations from Nvidia, ATI would not have been pressured to deliver the good products it's offering today. If either company never existed or if one was to die now, we consumers would be stuck with disappointing and overpriced products.

(3) I have to admit I personally don't like Nvidia rebranding practice. However, it's actually not as bad as one may think:
(i) The rebranded cards still offer comparable relative performance. That is, to a normal user, at any time in the past few years, a mainstream card from Nvidia will cost about the same and perform about the same as a mainstream ATI card. Similar to entry level and highend cards. So it doesn't matter whether Nvidia call it 9800 GTX+ or GTS 250, or GT210 or GT310.

(ii) Now, newer generations of ATI cards tend to have distinctively better feature sets. But who cares about the distinction between dx10 and dx10.1? How many dx11 games are out there right now? And how many actually game on 3 monitors?

(iii) Careful buyers can easily tell if a Nvidia card is a rebranded product by merely looking up its specifications on Nvidia's own site or elsewhere on the Internet. Most buyers, though, shouldn't bother because, as pointed out in (i) and (ii), rebranding hasn't actually affected most consumers in any significance way.

As an entity whose goal is money making and staying alive, Nvidia is expected to sometimes make moves that give illusion of progress and competitiveness to the consumers. But this is in principle the same as companies pricing a TV at, say, $999.99 instead $1000. Or ads that have big flashy words like "FREE" or "DISCOUNT" and that at the same time have restrictions printed at the bottom in tiny fonts. The practice is not pretty, but it's commonplace, so in particular, nothing to cry about.

(4) Nvidia has been busy making progresses in other fronts: GPGPU, Tegra 2, promoting and establishing a 3D standard, etc. You should be understanding that a company can sometimes reorganize its priorities and its allocation of resources.

(5) If you blame Nvidia for the current high prices of dx11 cards, then you should be blaming ATI too. ATI clearly could make profits with the original retail prices for 5850 and 5870 (259.99 and 379.99, respectively) but now ATI is selling these cards at 20%-30% higher because it wants to squeeze more money out of buyers while it can.

Finally, if you hate Nvidia merely because its lack of recent progress doesn't provide the 2-way horse race with ATI that is so entertaining to watch, then you should grow up!

Grow up

Should be 40% yield for hd5xxx chips and i seriously doubt that fermi will have better just considering that its much bigger chip. Even if there is less defect per surface it should still have lower yields per chip.

CAN YOU SAY "PAPER" launch?? We'll see how this all turns out. Mentioning this in January w/a supposed March delivery sounds too convenient to me. Maybe I'm skeptical, but this is just to limit any sales to AMD (not that AMD hasn't done this before).

4% yield, I think it's true, since actually cypress die and juniper die are same in size and circuit layout. AMD has fused half of Cypress die to become Juniper die.

I think Fermi will be launched in high enough quantity.

I must agree with Jen-Hsun Huang. The loser will whine about PhysX and has claimed that the open standards are better for physics feature in game.

Only a loser will pay a FUD whisperer to competitor.

so let me get this strait,

mario75 is advocating propaganda and deceitful practices from a company,

brilliant. . . . .

judging by those responses i was right on the money with my post. . . such a shame, telling me to grow up while defending a multi million dollar company cant get thier facts strait. what is this world comming too.

i own nvidia products, still a dishonest company.
