I have a question. Why is it that every time i ask which one i should get, everyone always says to get the ATI 9600PRO instead of the NVIDIA FX5700Ultra? How come people dislike nvidia so much? Everywhere i look i see people owning or wanting ATI cards. Im just wondering, why people like ATI's so much more then NVIDIA's? Is it because its the best for gaming? Or the best overall?

Even though people tell me to get the ATI, i personally want to get the nvidia. I just think it'll be better then the ATI with the programs i use, since i wont be gaming so much.

Anyways, just wondering what you guys think.

Persecution complex?

There are some known facts; the R9600XT outperforms the FX5700U 9 times out of 10. The FX line has issue even though the FX5700U was a bit of a redesign. And the R9600Pro can often reach R9600XT speeds and go well beyond (like mine which can run 24/7 @ 525+/350+). Also the FX5900XT kills any benifits the FX5700U might possibly have in those 1 out of 10 times.

Is it because its the best for gaming?
Yes, because the best for 2D is a completely different company, and if you're looking to do some workstation work, once again the FX5900XT would be a better choice.

So you're stubbourn, at least make the right choice and get the FX5900XT then.

Which is interesting that you spend all this time talking about people's recommendations and the poor FX5700U, and describing which applications you use and see what people think you should get.

It's pretty simple. You want nV then the FX5900XT makes sense, you want ATI then the R9800Pro, R9600XT or the saving of an R9600Pro make sense. The FX5700U has no place in the market because nV clobbered it with it's own card.

It's funny that you equate this to be brand favoritism. In fact, the 9600 PRO is simply the better card. While the 5700U is a good card, the 5700's shaders are a bit weak compared to the 9600 PRO, and the 9600 PRO overclocks like a banshee.

If you ask those same people which is better... a 9600 PRO or 5900XT... they'd say that the 5900XT is better. Not because of brand favoritism, just plain because it is the better card.

Basically, you're saying you don't want to believe this because you like Nvidia so much. If you're more interested in brand than performance, I suggest you go with your heart and buy the 5700U.

And if you don't game much as you say, then the ATI is a MUCH better solution... Ati image quality is superior to Nvidia's, as they traditionally use higher quality RAMDACS.

And frankly, the the sub-$200 category, the 9800 PRO is probably the best card out there right now.

And as he says, if you're looking to do work with 3d models and CAD, the 5900XT is the better card, because Nvidia's drivers and architecture work very well with those applications. But if you're doing 2d stuff... like photoshop, etc... Ati is the better way to go.

Ahh, interesting stuff. I dont mean to be in an arguement with any of this, just curious. I think you guys have laid it all down. I'd get the 5900xt, but its about $100(can) or something more then the 9600XT. So i'll probably just get the 9600xt then if everyone thinks its best.

Thank you guys for your help.

Yep the R9600XT is a good choice.
