I cant wait to really crank my skyrim enb and grass/texture mods up with all this vram

the recommended minimum is a i5 4590 for the VR stuff

I imagine a i5 4460 would be the lowest you should go, though an overclocked 2500k should be more than good

with something like a i5 6500 or better as the ideal

If you'd only jump to the 1000 series for the 1080 Ti, you'd likely be waiting quite some time. Historically, the Ti variants release like 9 or 10 months after the initial cards.

I'd see how the 1080 benchmarks against the 980 Ti about a week from now and if it's a marginal performance gain then just get a 980 Ti. Or grab a 970 to tide yourself over and get the 1080 Ti when it does release.

thanks for the link, well written and makes sense. Added it to the OP. Just sucks that Nvidia chose to do it this way, confusing literally everyone. Clearly not a very well thought out way to go about the change in naming. putting out 2 different prices like that with no explanation was a poor way to treat everyone.

also added some more links to specific brand cards and a contest by Gigabyte with a "secret Extreme Gaming card" for a prize. It showed up along with the teaser for their Extreme Gaming 1080 so have to guess that this is the prize they are offering. check it out :)

Me too. I'll likely buy the 1080 within the next couple of months and it would suck if a much better 1080Ti were to be relased just a few months later.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from NiCkS_91 : "Buying an overkilling GTX 1080 for 1080p @ 60Hz monitor"

for AAA games with maxed out settings gtx1080 will not be "overkill" as such on 1080p,
in Ashes of the Singularity it "only" got 74fps on 1080p max settings 😉
if you want max settings, and high fps at teh same time, you prob cant go wrong with it
if you can deal with either lower graphic settings or lower fps, you wont need a gtx1080 for 1080p gaming

In my opinion it's probably going to take about 4 weeks to really vet the 1080, don't get me wrong, if I could buy a 1080 today, I would, based on the hype of the twitch stream, but after that hype there is a lot to be thought about... like someone mentioned before, how long is it going to be before a gp100 chip is released? When nvidia decides to take their gp100 chip to the Geforce series, it's going to have HBM2, and that is where the differences like, 1080: GDDR5x, 1080 ti: HBM2. But, it my opinion, I don't think HBM2 is going to be a necessity for a couple more years. Right now, my main concerns are these: What resolution am I playing at. Do I want to play with all settings maxed? I am looking to never dip below 60 fps, and when I do, it isn't very often (luckily G-sync fixes a lot of this. Well for right now, I have two 760's in SLI. I don't ever want to SLI again to be honest with you, I'd rather have a good single flagship card. The only way nvidia could be doing right now is making their bus width higher than 256 bit, but either way.... GDDR5X as it is now, it about as fast as HBMv1... Don't get me wrong, I still want to see what AMD is going to come out with, but for right now, the question is for me is this: Buy 1080 now or wait for 1080 ti?

your question and about 50 other people who have made a thread asking that question in the last couple days 😀

yah resolution goals will dictate this really. if the 1080 is enough for vr and better than 980ti 4k gaming, then it will probably be enough for most people. probably overkill for many as well. the "what if" part of me though sure wants to see a gp100 hbm 2 card give us stupid levels of performance

trying to keep them contained here is all but impossible, but we are trying :) i just keep pointing folks this way and hope others start doing the same thing. then the mods can clean up all the extras as they get to them as i don't have that power to merge and make those threads go away.

the great thing about it is ur guranteed to get atleast 20 different ppl asking pretty much all the questions u could ever need answering soo all i gotta do is stayed glued to the first page for more updates

Yup, we should have a template for every time a new cpu/gpu come out. everyone ask the same stuff, over and over again.

Template =
"SHUT UP AND WAIT UNTIL YOU 1. READ ACTUAL REVIEWS, AND 2. ACTUALLY SEE IT IN THE FREAKING STORE"

That would answer half out threads this and early next week.

tempting hahah :)

"if you build it, they will come"

it kind of reminds me of how mid 90s pop stars were thought of.. my older brother waited to win a contest in the early aol days to be in a chatroom with brittany spears supposidly lol.

Hey, few questions:
1. Is there any information about Async compute on GTX 1070?
2. Will the R9 490, that AMD is going to release, have better performances that the GTX 1070, but the price will be lower?

Thanks.

1) wait review. Async compute was design to increase gpu utilization. It is possible nvidia does not really need async compute because their utization already high. Hence using async compute only make it worse with maxwell. And async compute does not mean automatically performance increase for radeon. Even radeon can have negative performance impact with async compute if not done right. Also there is a need to tune async compute specifically for each card because each card have different compute to bandwidth ratio as mention by hitman dev (IO Interactive). If there is too much hassle with async conpute dev might end up not using the feature unless sponsored by gpu maker.

2)no one knows that...yet. fury x was about equal with 980ti performance did amd significantly undercut nvidia? Hey nano is slower than Fury X but the card still command the same price as Fury X.
