WHAT THE HECK, PEOPLE?!?!? Titan has been out a while now, and yet there are STILL techs who think it's a 700 series card! It's an independent product, neither 600 or 700 series! Though if you must know, Titan is closer to being a 600 series than a 700

Frame time variances have become just too much for me with a multi GPU setup and ATI, i cant believe I've dealt with it for as long as I have on a 120hz monitor........the HD7970's are hitting ebay.......gtx780's on the way.

Maybe It's listed in the article somewhere and I missed it, but I'm curious what drivers were used in these benchmarks, especially for the Radeon cards. The 13.5 beta 2 drivers greatly reduce frame time variance in crossfire setups.

If I had to guess, I'd say tom's uses only the most current release drivers for it's benchmarks, so the 13.5 beta 2 wouldn't qualify.

????????????????
"Most" gamers are probably hoping to build entire systems for the price of a single GTX780. Fortunately, this is possible.
In other words, this card is way too expensive for the mainstream.

Check out page 5, Test Setup And Benchmarks:

AMD Catalyst 13.5 (Beta 2)

It said under testing methodology. They used 13.5 beta 2 for AMD cards and the 320.18 for nVidia.

It would be nice to use some NLE's like Premiere or something like Resolve in some of these GPU tests. I guess the Titan still looks like the best option due to CUDA power and for a mix of powerful video editing and gaming its still a much better option than a workstation card value wise.

Much cheaper than I expected... Let see if the selling cost is really this low...
I allso expect that 770 aka 680 is the thing to wait. Propably too early to next gen AMD and very little reason to facelift version. Maybe 770 aka 680 will become reasonable price point compared to 7970. But who knows. If this is indeed 650$ then 460$ for 680 does not sound too bad, but not great neither.

The other thing that boggles my mind when talking about just gaming- who cares if AMD is a better "value" if the gameplay isn't smooth with dropped/grunt frames. That is a complete dealbreaker for me and more important than raw FPS per dollar.

Good Gawd Y'all! Despite my better judgement, I ordered a pair... if for nothing more than the science of it all. I apologize to any who were trying to boycott based on price.

My 680s will need a new home if all goes as expected.

For single card there is less frame drops in 7970 than 780 has. Multi GPU is the problem, so in FPS per dollar one 7970 is leading! If you need more power you have to be prepared to pay for it much more. And as we have seen from Titan, for many people the price is not a problem!

It really blows my mind to see some people here acting like they really like the price point this thing is selling at!! it seems like nVidia's gimmick is playing out quite well and people are buying into the madness.

nVidia first releases a ridiculously priced card @ $1000 and then follows by a less ridiculously priced but still extremely overpriced card at $650 and then some people think that it is a good price? this outright pisses me off, as for us in Europe after adding VAT and higher margins due to higher labor costs etc.. we are ending up with a 700 Euros card that is just 10-15% better than the 400 Euro 7970 Ghz card across the board and with much less computer power?!! that is a damn joke

I was expecting a 500 Euro card with 50% performance jump from the 7970 Ghz, but to be required to pay 300 Euros above expectation for an up to 15% performance that is just plain shit.

I have been putting off the purchase of the 7970 Ghz in anticipation of this card, but after this greedy, and unreasonable pricing, one really needs to be a fool to buy this crap at this price point!!!!

Like stated in a comment above, this 700 Euros is like 80% of my budget for the entire rig, and so that price is just outright outrageous especially for a series that is just a milking for their 600 series that adds nothing fundamentally new to the table, with a whole new generation coming out in 6 months from now!!!

Well, if you want better performance than a single 7970, then this card is the best value. Even if its performance per dollar is lower than the 7970, it offers more performance. It's a much better choice than a 7990 or a pair of 7970s, as well as the Titan and even the GTX 690. And since top of the line always carries a premium, this pricing is actually decent.

But for most of us, waiting for the GTX 770 is a better idea. It would be nice if a pair of GTX 770s makes the GTX 780 semi-irrelevant (to anyone with a SLI-enabled motherboard anyway, but that would include most enthusiasts anyway).

I still recall HardOCP's remark in their HD7970 review that even that card is almost overkill for 1920x1080 gaming. If you don't need UltraMaxOhWOW! settings, even a HD7870 is sufficient for one 1920x1080 monitor on high or better settings. I'm sure I did, if only to test it, but I don't recall which games I may have played on my HD7970; I bought it first to mine BTC. Hopefully it will have time to pay for itself, and then I'll have a "free" HD7970 to play games.

Yeah i really need more performance than a single 7970 Ghz can offer, but NOT at any price, if you know what i mean.

I game on 3 Monitors 4K resolution, and a single 7970 Ghz can barely handle that setup especially with NextGen titles like Crysis 3, you have to turn something of for the game to be comfortably playable, like turning off Anti Aliasing or lowering specs, so that extra 15 or 20% performance is really needed because you can then use that extra bit of performance to put everything on Ultra high and still have a playable FPS.

But again all of this is only desirable at a certain price point, but with 700 Euros then i would rather live with a 7970 Ghz especially that it comes with 4 AAA titles now for 10 months or so and accept to play without MSAA until NextGen cards come out and you can get a Titan like performance or much more for around 500 Euros! i see this as a much better deal/strategy than paying double the 7970 price now for only 20% performance gain that is still not gonna cut it for NextGen titles on 4K resolutions, as like i said it is not as powerful as i expected it to be .

My next card upgrade or I might even get 2 of them. Will see how 1 card does at my res of 2560 x 1600 first.

I'm not sure where you're getting your figures from, or what you're basing your expectations on, but neither seem to be grounded in reality. The 780 can have much greater than a 15% performance advantage over the 7970 GHz, the reviews I've read seem to average between 20% and 30%. And why would you expect a 50% performance boost over a 7970 GHz? The Titan doesn't even achieve that.

It's not a great price/performance ratio, but when has that ever been the case for a x80 equivalent high-end card? As Sakkura said the top of the line always carries a premium, especially when it's met with no competition. While I wouldn't call $650 a good price for the 780, I also wouldn't call it outrageous.

I based my expectations on the rumors for this card that used to claim up to 50% performance boost over the GTX 680 and since the 680 is in the same performance range as the 7970 Ghz hence my 50% boost expectations, i was also willing to pay up to 550 Euros for this card which is already a 150 Premium over the 7970 Ghz which is more than enough for the extra benefits it is providing and way over the price levels we come to expect for "top of the line" cards especially when they are not even a new architecture.

If you are in the US for you 650 bucks would seem ok, it is ok for me too if i had to pay only 650 bucks, but add VAT to that and European Labor costs and tell me what do you feel about the 700 Euro price we have here in Europe? it is outrageous to say the least!

I hope you can see things from my point of view, the European pricing is a joke and more than outrageous. especially when i really need this card and have waited for it for a month, but the price disappointed me big time.

From what I hear on a regular basis the pricing on tech in general is outrageous. It's not a 780 problem, it's a European VAT problem, whatever that entails. But from what you're telling me the 7970 GHz is 350 Euros, while the 780 is 700? If that's the case I think the choice is clear...

might be time to move:

... or buy a 7970.

True, not everyone can afford a $700 video card. And very few can afford the $1K Titan.
