I upgraded from the x16 to the 590 board today.

Well....still upgrading. There were so many driver conflicts and BS that I'm completely reinstalling everything now. Probably a good thing in the long run but what a PIA.

Hi everyone,

I'm reading this thread since it had 6 pages. This is my first post now *wheee*

New system running fine.
Ran 3d benchmark 2006 and scored 3533.

I have a E6600 on P5W, 2 GB Corsair 6400 and a 7950GX2. Without OCing I got 7939 in 3DMark2006 wiht default settings. After OCing (FSB 362, 3,262 GHz, stock cooling) I get a score of 8532.

Raffie, you should check a few things. First of all:
Is you GeForce running in SLI mode (multi-gpu-mode in nVidia terms)? With default settings, mine was not. Only a score of 4804 without that mode.
Second: Did you change your 3DMark settings? I think, with higher res and more AA you'd automatically get a lower score.

8533 without OCing? That would mean, the 590 is a lot faster than the 975X. I'd really like to see some reviews with benchmarks. Did THG already get their board? *g*

Perhaps I'll switch when the 680 comes out.

Well this board is better....but not by much.

With the old nForce x16 board I could never get a stable overclock. This one I can, but its not as much as I'd like.

I was able to get my Core 2 Extreme up to 3.51 ghz and the RAM up to 880 mhz max. Any more and the system either wouldn't post or shortly after poster it would reboot itself. EPP for SLI memory is pretty much worthless, but I haven't toyed with it much.

If anyone has some tips on how to OC this thing better post up. This is what I'm running now.

Multiplier raised from 11 to 12
Using the built in utility for a 10% OC (couldn't get it stable manually)
vCore set to 1.45
Memory voltage to 2.2 (ram is rated for 2.2)

Got to 3.51 ghz on the CPU and 880 mhz on the ram. Highest I could get the system to post was a 3.82 ghz setting for the CPU and about 962 on the RAM, but like I mentioned above at that setting the PC reboots. My freakin' ram is rated at 1066 too. 😛

Any tips would be great. Still not convinced its totally stable. I'll push 2 accounts of EQ2 at max settings and see what happens later.

I noticed that with my ddr2-800 ram that I did not need to OC it for the system to use it.

All my bios was set to default. In the OS and in the bios is registers my ram running at 800MHz... maybe Asus fixed the mobo so it does this....

With all the new hardware coming out in November, what kind of power supply do you guys think is going to be required for running a Core2Duo E6600 on the new NVIDIA nForce 680i motherboard with a new G80?

A brand name (Antec or similar) 500W or greater power supply with at least 400/450 W on the 12V rails. I plan to do a similar build in december with the 8800GTS and planning on running it on an Antec Neo HE 500W PSU (3x12V rails @ 17A each)

I got the Thermaltake 700w

http://www.hardware-review.net/html/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2071

I read reviews and they all say the same about it.

I have the 750w version without the modular cables. This actually is my second one, the first one died a month after having it.....

thanks to newegg they replaced it without a hassle, and luckily i had my old enermax 600w psu which i used in the meantime (almost sold it)

after having experienced that with thermaltake i'll stick the brand to cases and fans... leave psu's for enermax. and if i had the chance, I would've bought the 850w enermax galaxy, but it wasnt out yet.

I would avoid Antec from personal experience. There PSUs are fairly well designed but they use cheap caps. So they PSU may not last as long as you would expect.

I would say that everything depends on the price. You get what you pay for. you can get an Antec one, for $30, it might die for sure by any stupid reason. But if you compare it to a $80 of the same brand Antec, it will last and will protect your pc for sure.

Im interested on the Ultra X-finity 2G Black PSU w/ Flexforce and Afterspin tech.

So it is confirmed that the 680i will be released in early November? or do you think it will be another waiting game? I still have that e6600 on my shelf and settling with my PentiumD for now.

I know the c55 is going to be incredible, but do you think i should wait a month and hope its released on time, or go ahead and get the 590 and use my hardware before they are obsolete, because i keep seeing statments saying the 680i will be q1 2007, but i also see where its supposed to be released with the g80 cards in november.. ehh

It will be released on GEFORCE LAN 3 for sure, what other better event to release it? What better moment than releasing it with the new G80 videocards!, we should be seeing boards soon.

We have discussed this many times, NO, this motherboard will not be compatible with Quad-Core. Why? because this motherboard wont go higher than 300mhz FSB and Kentsfield needs at least 333mhz.

Well this string slowed down since the boards came out! I'd like to see some more reviews.

Sounds like more people are going to wait for the 680i than the c55 version of the new board.

I just wanted to update all on an earlier post of mine. I bought my ASUS mobo from ExcaliburPC and couldn't find the outer box with the serial number which I wanted to register on the ASUS forums. I ended up finding the outer box. It wasn't a box after all - it was a cardboard sleeve and it fell behind something in my house which is why I didn't think they shipped it with it.

Anyway, I am still frustrated with ASUS not helping me find the serial number on the mobo. I called them back for I believe the 5th and 6th time and got a guy who took my name and number because he said the call queue was full and that they would get back to me. That was a few days ago. I know that is just the way it goes with most tech support but I wish we had the power to realistically get the tech support for these popular companies straightened out. At my last company, we built DVR's strictly with Intel mobos and their tech support was very good. It seems like few factor that in when buying hardware mostly because most companies have lousy support. Oh well...
