In 20-30 years, we'll likely have a neural interface for both input to a computer as well as output mastered, as well as quantum processors and wireless power. At that point in time, it may be that something approaching the form factor of today's smartphone can completely replace the PC.

But for at least the next decade or two, smartphone capabilities will lag too far behind those of a PC for many users to completely abandon them.

Mobile is the future because all of the stupid sheep flock to the latest device like hogs to a trough, and feed on the latest gimmick like its the best thing since sliced bread. So ya its the future because that's where the money is, not that they're actually making anything useful. A phone is a phone and a computer is a computer when you try to combine the two you get an iturd or a Roid.

theres always gonna be pcs and desktops, they need to get over that. besides, my guess is in 5-8 years or so, we will have OLED capacitive touch screen tablets and can roll up or something like that, but even with things like that, there will likely ALWAYS be a stationary computing device.

They should shut him up back then !!

They hires people who does not know what they are talking about !

He looks like an idiot !!

Pcs are archaic ha ?!

Like I told them [nVidia] .. put their money where their mouth is ... build a super tablet that does everything a PC can do only 12 times better ... they have 5 months 23 hours 01 minutes and 5 seconds ...

Twice a month there is someone that tells that mobile is the future and PC are gonna die.
I'm pretty sure "someday" it will happen ....

Until mobile phones costs $20 each and are nearly indestructable. I doubt they'll ever replace PCs for much of anything.

I'm an aircraft mechanic and I noticed a trend of all the younger guys making fun of my crap pay as you go phone (calls and text only) while playing with their new mobile toys. Nearly 1/2 of them had smashed screens within 6 months and I'd say 10% of them flat out killed their phone, a few "upgraded" to new phones (the same or better) but quite a few have down graded back to blackberries or what ever phones come free with service. Guess having to shell out $200-600 for a new phone + another year or two of services is hard on the bank account.

Oh after my free with minutes crap pay as you go phone drowned in my pool, I upgraded to a flip phone with a camera and video for $20. It's already got a big gash in it after a month. I definitely won't shedding any tears over it after it dies either.

Yes indeed mobile is the future, but this is the present and I like my computer thanks. Hey Nvidia, would you rather I buy an ATI card when the next gen hits as well?

wow, looks like everyone is getting the mobile high. everyone needs to chill out, desktops will be here forever in some way, for the power and display size that mobile cannot provide.

[citation][nom]Trueno07[/nom]ATI is probably thinking "Yea, that's fine Nvidia. Go ahead and leave the Enthusiast/Scientific/Movie Producing/Server market to us. Because desktops are only capable of doing what phones can do, but a little better. Right?"[/citation]
[citation][nom]velozzity[/nom]Theres an Idiot born every day,Seriously, he may be a really brilliant man, but he's got blinders on and does'nt see that plenty of people still enjoy the power of a desktop pc and I don't see anything remotely close to the size of a mobile device replacing my desktop anywhere near the next decade. I may be wrong but my old desktop for about a decade ago was not significantly bigger than the one i have now, just that we are constantly learning how to put more into less space, but the form factors are more or less the same, just more performance for less. and 1ghz, omg that is so fast, well show me a cell phone processor with 6 cores that will overclock to 4.5ghz and I'll get excited, but by then who knows we will be using 12-24 core processors and maybe even break the current ghz barrier, love to see a 10ghz processor, but who knows. I do think that mobile devices will get more powerful, but Neil Trevett seriously believes that the likes of Intel and AMD are just going to shut down R & D for their x86 and x64 processors for desktop than desktop will always have the performance advantage.[/citation]
[citation][nom]digitalrazoe[/nom]Ok nVidia - Put your money where your mouth is .. I want a tablet like device (KEEP THE SIZE UNDER 19 INCHES DIAGONAL )that can cut, mangle, edit, spit out, re purpose, transcode acquire at a blink of an I in multiple channels. No less than 4 streams of uncompressed HD 1080p 4 streams of NATIVE 2k and 4k RED Capable injest, HDSLR h.264 native editing system .. That can edit and composite upto 12 layers with 3D effects available at any given time and IN REAL TIME !!! ON TOP OF THAT the ability to record, mix and master audio 24 tracks 192khz BroadcastWAV capable Ardour ( or Protools like ) interface with Multitouch screen capable of passing automation cues TO the program for automated mixing and mastering. Must have 10hour battery life per charge 2TB of storage and cost no more than $800.00 ( giver or take 199.99) OH oh oh !!! and for my Gaming friends -- it has to play Crysis at no less than 99fps BUILD THAT .. and then I will sing the PC "death-knell" "BONG -- BRING OUT YOUR DEAD !!!, BONG-BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!!!" You got 6 months to develop such product .. Ready ? GO !!!![/citation]
[citation][nom]MDillenbeck[/nom]So that means I'll be using my 4.3" WVGA screen and 1 GHz processor with no keyboard to play games. (It can play Crysis?!? Wow.)I also can't wait to see 1 GHz smartphones editing AVCHD video or used to create animations using something like Flash or Toon Boom. Workstations are often PCs - unless he thinks the workstation market will be taken over by Apple.[/citation]
Okay take it easy people, he didn't say anything about abandoning the PC, or signaling its death. He also didn't mention anything about running high-end productivity software, or performing intense 3D/video editing or rendering tasks on a hand held mobile device. He's talking primarily about mobile devices being the future of social connectivity (the internet), and the migration of similar tasks from desktops and laptops where it's mainly found today.

There will always be a place for desktops, in the same way there has always been a place for rack servers, large scale supercomputers, and render farms, all of which still exist harmoniously after the expansion of desktop computing. The future of this industry has always been about expansion, migration, and convenience. What he's envisioning is a future where hand held mobile devices will be powerful and integrated enough to perform everyday tasks for the majority of users.

People tend to blow these comments way out of proportion, becoming offended and paranoid at the prospect of something new or different. The same thing happened after the Fermi announcement, flaming fan-boys and otherwise general douchebags condemning Jen-Hsun and Nvidia for "abandoning" the gaming market. Why? Because the initial keynote centered around GPGPU computing being "the future"...lol.

[citation][nom]tolham[/nom]there will always be a demand for workstations by the entertainment industry, business offices and gamers.i wouldn't mind having a smartphone that i could use for all my regular computer needs, but i would keep my PC for gaming, torrenting and blu-ray.[/citation]
[citation][nom]ares1214[/nom]theres always gonna be pcs and desktops, they need to get over that. besides, my guess is in 5-8 years or so, we will have OLED capacitive touch screen tablets and can roll up or something like that, but even with things like that, there will likely ALWAYS be a stationary computing device.[/citation]
I couldn't agree more. Using desktop PC's for workstation tasks and high-end gaming will be the way to go, at least for the foreseeable future.

Face Palm, I own a Nvidia rig although I do have a ATI and 3DFX rigs. Personally Nvidia is a foolish like many of its peers of the industry. From the consumer stand point we need a third party instead of just the two we have now and with out Intel sucking up more of the market.

but seriously.. easy it.

furthermore this nVidia guy is a fool.

I honestly dont give a crap about what these people "think will happen". We all know that computing will get smaller and smaller, now stop telling me that it is going to happen AND MAKE IT HAPPEN. I could predict that screens are going to become obsolete and we are going to get all holographic things in the future. sounds believable right?? well im not going to get an article on toms for saying this! these idiots are just people that want to get their name into the press.

I think I, and most other people, will stick with our "archaic" PCs until we can get equal performance on all fronts, which I can guarantee won't happen for a good 5-10 years, as even SSD drives are still a luxury, and they're what it's gonna take (or something better down the line) to make something like a phone or tablet fast enough to compete in such a small form factor. Not to mention a few generations worth of cpu/gpu die shrinks.

This dudes seems to forget that once upon a time they where young and like to play games. This days the PC is a killer in the game subject, the best graphics are hold in PC's hands, like it or not it's true. Consoles are Ok but PCs are for other kind of freaks like I am.
Anyway the point is, as long as there be young people, PCs won't stop from existing.

And those who think that Gamer-Notebooks are the solution it's damn wrong.. why would I buy a platform that get old so fast that is not even fun to use it, I rather get a chipper console then.
