I'm a Texan... I like my ATI and AMD products.

And I'm happy with my intel products. Nvidia has stumbled many times over these past few years, badly.

I don't get it. To rain on AMDs parade, they are releasing a discrete solution that is competitive with AMDs IGP lineup? Then they are also reducing the price of a 2nd tier video card to compete with a 3rd tier card? @_@ I am so confused, how is this at all affecting AMDs 6xxx launch.

I don't see the new nvidia card making a splash on AMD's parade. AMD will completely overshadow them actually. Sigh... and I am an Nvidia fan too. =P

I don't know if anyone else is seeing between the lines here. There have been reports of problems with the manufacturing process for AMD, which has caused chips to perform below expectations. Then, the big debut of the new 6000 series is headlined by a couple of mid-range products (the 6870 is comparable to the 5850). In the past, any new series of graphics cards has always debuted with the fastest, most expensive version. Seems like some hype is being created when there should be questions asked instead.

as long as it benfits us consumers. good competition is always welcome.
was it the gtx200 series where the prices was ridiculous? and then AMD countered with their own and nvidia had to slice their prices down then even gave rebate to those who bought the early release.
now imagine if amd couldn't release a good batch that time, we would be selling a leg to buy a good card.

[citation][nom]bartgoblin[/nom]with all due respect with the author,i think the article header should read "reign" not "rain"[/citation]
With all due respect to you, Sir, I believe that the author is not mistaken. The term "rain on parade" means spoiling a show. While "reign" is a term for superiority (more like sovereignty) of a ruler, which is usually followed by the word "over", as in: "reign over a country", not "reign on a country". Authors usually edit their articles before they publish them. Mr. Yam is no exception. A minor typo may be possible. But a fatal grammatical error is most unlikely.

I'm not sure why anybody is claiming nVidia is going to rain on ATI's parade. The release of the 430 was planned well in advance of AMD planning to announce Barts this month. When the news leaked about Barts being announced in October the statement was that ATI planned on raining on nVidia's parade.

[citation][nom]killerclick[/nom]If nVidia goes down, AMD/ATI cards will start at $1000.[/citation]

I hate it when people say it... you just got the idea from someone else and didnt really even think about it

if that happened then almost ANYONE could start a graphics card company and provide a good alternative. its called capitalism

not to mention the anti monopoly laws the U.S. has.

but its undeniably true that having a 50/50 (or close to) market share between ati and nvidia make for the best competition and thus lower prices for us.

There is confusion about the model numbers, but I don't see the "6870 being on par with the 5850" being true... it would create confusion. A new model that is slower than the previous?

The 6770 is about as fast as the 5850, but at a lower costs ($200 tops) considering its design costs... Its a good place to enter the market as it will quickly wipe out the 5800 series. Look what happened when the $200 GF-8800GT came out, it ate the sales of the older and yet slightly faster 8800GTS/GTX which were $300~450.

If you look at a much more detailed chart of the 6750 & 6770, the size and power puts the 6750 just a tad under the 5830 and the 6770 about equal to the 5850. The 6770 uses slightly more power than the 5770 and easily less than the 5830.

AMD wants to hurt Nvidia and keep their market posting strong. The 6770 has no business being over $200 as it's competing with the GeForce 450~460s. Selling the 6700s for $150/$180 would generate a ton of new sales for those of us not willing to spend $300 for a 5850.

The GF430 would have to sell for about $90 and be faster than the 5670 to rain on AMD's party. The GF450 competes with the 5750~5770 in the $130~160 price range.

Nvidia... where "GT/GTS/GTX" is meaningless. ie: Is there a GTX430 or GT475? Or two versions of a GeForce460 which are quite different in performance.

AMD Rains on their own parade w/ lack luster drivers and lack luster R&D. NVDA is the winner time after time... don't get me wrong NVDA makes mistakes but AMD ALWAYS seems to be playing catch up. NVDA does all the R&D, AMD rides on their coat tales. It's been that way since the beginning of these GPU battles.

NVDA does all the R&D, AMD rides on their coat tales.

Its NVIDIA, first of all. AMD is on their coat tales? Buying extra low-quality crack?
AMD hit the market with DX11 more than 6 months before Nvidia had their card. By then, AMD had a complete line of cards of DX11. When Nvidia finally gets their low-mid range $100 GF430, they'll have a mostly full line up and yet will continue to sell the G200 series for quite a while.

AMD has modern products starting at $40 and up.

So where is the catch up? Nvidia "Caught up" with their GF 465~485 cards, only months before AMD releases the 6000 series. And for the MOST part, its the $100~200 space that generates the most sales. Yes the $530~550 GF480 is faster than the 5870... but its not $150 faster.

AMD drivers are very good, its no better or worse than Nvidia.
AMD's weakness is Linux drivers.

I don't care who wins.... be it nVidia or ATI..... As long as they compete, the customers will enjoy the benefits..... in the end, as customers, isn't that what we want???? Better performance for cheap prices! :)
