Oh I plan on joining Guilds (did it alot in Morrowind, was some of the funnest stuff too), but really I'm only about 10hours into the game sofar, I've be meandering alot exploring the features of the game and how things look and how the controls/features have changed.

I'll get serious soon enough though. Heck I still haven't finished the first quest of finding Martin so I'm needing a little focus I think, and that will come once I'm fully out of my chest cold.

I hope it gets sorted out with a patch so that they are less inclined to find a reason in order to kill/maim/rape you.

YEah the AI is hillarious, Imperial guards stealing, randomly killing other NPCs (I got my silver bow when a guard killed the Imperial Forester for Hunting the King's Deer 8O ), hey too bad for him, but Free Silver Bow for me within 15 mins of leaving the sewers! 8)

I like that they think for themselves, but incidents like you describe are kinda weird.

LOL! That's awesome!

YEah like I said, weird stuff goes on when the characters run free, but seriously as goofy as that is, the Imperial guards stealing, and killing each other is a little more 'warped' IMO.

Funny that they were talking about the delay originally being because NPCs were killing vital story characters, now that's F'ed up.
Your own teammates jumping in front of your fire happened in HL2 (ever have to keep pointing the squad into a corner to stay the F' out of your way?) and a few other games, so that's nothing new, but still frustrating as heck like you say. I do find it funy though imperials attacking each other, I would think that'd be something a quick XI-0 =/= attack XI-1 string could fix and not compromise any other AI. I found it interesting seeing people sleeping and thus leavng places un guarded while I was nearby, pretty nice little trick like the real world. I did notice some mice seem to think they can escape through solid rock though so obviously there's more than just a bug or two, but nothing major yet for me, but the friendly fire stuff is annoying just like in HL2 wastes weapons/turns, wastes a helping hand, and if they attack you afterwards adds +1 enemy. :x

I get:

25-40fps wandering around in town

60-90fps in most dungeons

15-25ish fps out in the woods

Last obvivion gate i went in was around 25-30 fps.

i have a 3700+ 64 cpu, 1.5 gb ram and a pci-e 6800 GS - with coolbits 2.0 frame ahead rendering to 0 tweak and some ini tweaking (increase ram usage and stuff) i can run max quality with HDR and get those frame rates, which is pretty playable considering all the whining thats been going on about the performance of the game over all.

So from your experience will OBLIVION be playable on my computer?

Sempron 3100+

X800GTO AGP 256MB OC'd to around 425/519 ???

1280 MB DDR RAM

77 Gigs freespace.

Yes but at low settings (800x600-1024x768 + Bloom, No AA). You can push it higher, but it won't be as smooth.

Be sure to defrag your hard drive and update your drivers (MoBo, Bios, Graphics, Audio) first.

I just want to be able to play it at 1024X768 with high detail, but low AA/AF and Bloom. ...

If that doesn't work, than I don't want it. Nothings worse than a game that looks like GARBAGE...

Well - Can you tweak a LOT of the settings? I know that some games you can turn like EVERYTHING on or off, like shadows and reflections, etc etc... thne other games it's just LOW MED or HIGH

I mean If I can tweak this were the details are high, but I have no shadows then thats fine.

Can someone send me a screen of the settings?

i just googled oblivion INI's yesterday and tried some.

there was one that had HQ settings but ramped down draw distances and water effects and stuff, but the game still looked good - i was getting 60-80fps in town, and like 50 out in the woods - but i could only see about 30 feet in front of me.

there will be a patch soon, as well as custom drivers from the big 2 videocard war machines, it'll get better. its like how morrowind was when it first came out - or better example - ultima 9 if you can remmeber that ol. wasnt playable on anything but 3dfx until they patched it lol.

Then go play Tetris, JEEZ! It's a tough game.

The game scales well and it's not about the pretty pictures it's about the gameplay.

Seriously, do you think you have a top of the line card, you're last generation below the top class card in the most demanding game sofar, you gotta expect some concessions, just like R9800 owners had to for D3 and FartCry.

You can tweak, but save your original .ini file, and don't start adjusting willy-nilly. Too many people F'up their .ini file and ask for "original copies'.

Read the elderscroll.com forum if you wana get more tweaking tips. Lotsa stuff there, but use at your own risk.

Yep, stuff like that is fairly simple, turn off grass shadows and shadow self are two of the most important for good game play, especially if you use HDR (which is not as gruelling as AA surprisingly enough).

Let it auto detect first, try that, and THEN tweak IMO.

hehe the autodetect for a lot of people picks high by default which is a problem for most.

BUT.

the ini file under my documentsmy gamesoblivionoblivion.ini (yes its in the my documents folder, not the game folder - dunno why) is MASSIVE. theres a ton of stuff you can tweak in there.

i'm impressed with the HDR rendering as well - it gives the game a whole new look as opposed to bloom - the lighting makes everything look surreal and like a fairy tale, metals are shiny and stuff.. its great. and i didnt notice any performance hit to it.

Hi there!

Well got my copy of oblivion yay! ;>
been playing it for like 5 hours.. but 3mins at the time.. the game goes black.. the screen kinda disapears.. but menu's are still there lol..

Im running :
Asus A8N-SLI Del , AMD 64 4400x2, 4096 RAM , 2x 200gb Sata Raid 0 , Gforce - 6800 Ultra GS .. And Running Window Xp X64

I've Installed new forceware drivers for my MBoard.. and Installed Forceware 84.21 for my Graphic Card... think i've tried all drivers for it.. and Still Oblivion hates me..

Anyone who knows what the problem could be? Or Knows someone with the same problem?

Ya,

I've never actually played the game, but this is what I get from reading lots of articles.
The x1800/x1900 and 7800/7900 is no problem
It seems to really play the game well at 1024x768, high-detail, no AA/AF
You need a 256meg 16 pipe - 6800GT, 7800gs, or x800XT or better.
The 6800gs is the borderline for Obilivian.

The 8 pipe 6600GT, x700 or lower just can't cut the mustard !!

I am sure those 4/8 pipe cards run Ultima 9 great...

I wasnt able to use those drivers, i had the same problem. I'm using Z-Tweaked drivers from guru3d.com, whatever the newest version is.

also might be if your card is over clocked in the control panel.

i would suggest drivercleaning out your old drivers and using the Z-tweaked drivers until nvidia releases the Oblivion tweaked drivers - tomorrow apparently.

one other thing - download coolbits 2.0 from guru3d (its just a reg file that modifies your nvidia control panel) - theres one setting in the 'other settings' menu tab i think that is 'render ahead x frames' change it to 0. i got an extra 5-10fps from that.

well it runs fine NOW lol.

6 years later 😛

but back then it was unplayable in D3D, even tho by then 3dfx was already dead they used that anyway. a couple months of patching and it was fine.

Funny I was detected at high on the X700 and had no problems, but it's amazing how random the problems are. People with X300/GF6200s playing fine, people with X1900/GF7900s having issues.

The most common things I see first in threads that makes me roll my eyes and ignore the post is... "I changed the .ini file, but I still can't play at 1600x1200 while I could play with 4XAA in BF2".

People just don't get it, Oblivion isn't like any other game stress wise. Just like D3 broke many people's 'stable overclocks' Oblivion is changing 'typical' settings people have become comfortable with.

The .ini file is actually installed in your documents for each different boot/OS interesting concept and should help some of the stability issues some of us dual-boot Morrowind users experienced (W98SE/W2K)

Yeah to me that's impressive the low performance hit (compared to FartCry). It does lend some nice effects, even so subtle as adding just the right flare outdoors to things as subtle as the horses white spots which change even at off-angles.

Actually I'm playing on the Mobility Radeon X700 my laptop just fine.
In general the X700 plays much better than the GF6600 because of the increased vertex engines. No problem for me, I don't even run full out on 400/400 I'm at my 'gaming' speed of 350/350 and it's mightly smooth, with bloom enabled and no AA.

I am sure those 4/8 pipe cards run Ultima 9 great...

Funny you should say that, I said in their forum that FX uers should stop complaining about the games and expecting it to be like King's Quest and Ultima.

i was doing that quest with that crazy guy where you follow people around.. for an entire day.. really.. really boring.. but anyway.. was following this chick out while she was.. harvesting grapes.. and it was dawn and the sun was rising, and behind her all exposed skin was glowing in the sunlight, it was like a dream.

and then i ran around her jumping and casting restoration for like an hour while i waited for her to do stuff to work acrobatics, atheltics and rest. all at once while i was doing nothing else 😛

side note - i pick pocketed her rake and her hoe, and yet she still managed to pull more out of.. well i dont wanna now .. and continue her work. was kinda funny.

My system : P4 3.2 Ghz, 1GB Kingston HyperX, XFi Fatal1ty, 9800 Pro... I get about 30-60 fps but thats @ 640X480 if I go with a higher res its too choppy 🙁 but I must say its the best looking 640X480 I have seen in a long time LOL

eek. you should be able to tweak it to run hgiher res than that, thats not a bad system - tho i dont know the video card, my friends X800 (tho its not a real x800, its a prototype / modified one from ATI labs) runs it the same frame rate as me, which is weird 😛

turn some draw distances down, some grass stuff down.. give some lovin' to the ini and tweak that sucker 😛
