Ok first up i'm using xp pro sp2. I disconnected my pc today as i'd moved the desk around. Hooked it all back up and the pc just resets whilst running the win xp boot page (the one with the scrolling graphic). As the page disappears, my pc clicks and it's reset. I could get it to start up ok in safe mode, but couldn't work out what was going on. I'd lost my printer, and when trying to check the system sounds it said there appeared to be no sound device (which is onboard).
It wouldn't read my boot floppy DOH! so i chucked the xp install disc in the drive, and tried to repair from there. Again everytime the pc tried to boot it would reset. Except on safe mode.
I was desperate to get to one of my documents today (urgent meeting tomorrow), so reinstalled xp in a new folder. So i now have 2 win xp's on the same pc. It appears to work on the newly installed O/S, still got no sound or printer, but i managed to get the modem going so i can ask for HELP!
The good news is i can access the doc i wanted and back up some stuff. I'm not sure about my e-mails in outlook express. I'm wary of starting it new in case i'm deleting the old stuff somewhere, which i'm desperate to avoid.
The bad news is i have two O/S on my pc. What's the best thing i can do to clean this mess up? If i keep the new one i've got to set my pc up all over again. Ok the programs are on the system already so there won't be much d/l.
Can anyone help me with the original diagnosis (dxdiag kept giving me a direct sound error)???
And what's the best thing to do with the mess i have left. Are there any easy ways to redirect path's and keep all my programs, files and passwords alive?
I haven't got a clue what i'm doing with XP i'm afraid.
