Onboard Audio, help!

I've searched Google and can't find an answer specific to my problem.

Fairly recently new Soyo P4VGA motherboard with onboard AC97 audio which has
been enabled in the BIOS. Speakers connected to the correct port and tested fine
on another system. Running Win98SE and originally installed audio drivers that
came on CD with m/b.

The sound is "choppy" in any application I use. Whether it's a game, Windows
Media Player or whatever, the sound cuts in and out and the actions on the
screen stutter along with the sound. Without the sound enabled the games run
smoothly.

I've tried the newest AC97 audio driver for this m/b and still the same problem.

The wierd thing is going into the control panel and selecting Multimedia I've
tried to change the properties and lower the Hardware Acceleration from Full to
other levels and even after I click reply and reboot the level returns back to
Full.

Any advice on what's going on? Does the mothboard have a bad audio chip? What it
does play sounds right but maybe the choppiness will go away if I whack the
tower a few times with my shoe. . .

I don't have a clue about this one guys,
Brandy

That should read "click Apply" not reply. Sorry - my typing is blonde too!

You are luckier than me! I couldn't get the rear channels to work at all on
my system. I had to reinstall my old SBLive! card. I would check for any IRQ
conficts and make sure there is no caching going on. It is know to increase
distortion. It is weird that the default BIOS setting on the motherboard
(according to various site I visited) have the wrong settings for the AC'97.

Is there another IRQ being shared with the sound?

Not according to the Device Manager in Windows. Also, after reading a previous
post referring to IRQ, I checked in the BIOS to see what was going on there.
Currently the BIOS says its handling IRQs in AUTO mode. When I go into
Properties for the Multimedia device (RealTek AC97 - the only one listed) it
says the IRQ can not be changed. I don't see any errors in the panel and no
other devices are using the same IRQ. Does this help at all? Thanks.

Could it be that I'm using plain old PC100 SDRAM when the board also supports
upto PC2700 DDR memory?

Bought brand new DDR ram (512mb) and there's no change in audio problems.
