Agreed that they don't even have dumpsters, so you're arguing that it's better to take an African kid and instead of giving him something to eat, you plunk a laptop on his kwashiorkor-swollen belly? That hundred bucks would feed that kid for a year or two. But no, let him go watch some YouTube, it might take his mind off his starvation. If anyone has to do some cranial rectal-pulling, it might be you. Don't be so damn naive. Those child soldiers will be using those laptops to learn how to focus their rifle sights better.

@ADM-86

I don't know what country you're in, so I can't comment on how it works. All I can tell you is that so far, my passport has had over 60 entry stamps from as many different countries, and I've seen enough poverty and starvation to last me a thousand lifetimes. What people in many of these countries need is:

1) Food.
2) Clean water.
3) The execution of ALL their corrupt politicians.

They don't need a green plastic clamshell in the naive expectation that one of them will be the African Bill Gates. Even if it works out that way, that one person will likely keep all the money to himself and let the rest of his fellow villagers starve in the mud.

In the voice of George Bush: "you can give somebody a loaf of bread, or something so they can eat I guess, otherwise you kin tell 'em how to make their own bread so's they kin make their own if they want to eat for a bit longer".

"Now excuse me while I go stuff my face full of caviar."

Aha! So the green laptops have epicurious.com as their default home page? A "fat" lot of good that's gonna do the starving kid! 8O

Guys, you obviously have very informed opinions about how the OLPC works, how all 3rd world coutries are and what will certainly happen to those poor green things :!:
And yet you seem to forget a few major details: Those pcs arent going to some civil/religious/whatever conflint zone in Somalia or Eritreia.
They are going to countrys as Nigeria, South Afica, India and Brazil (where i live).
Countrys like these can afford to feed these people and buy those pcs :!: 8)
I dont know about other countries, but i can tell what is happening in mine: Yes we have poor people, many but most have decent lives.
They may not have super computers or Mercedes but they have a place to live and a UN world reference brazilian program that conditions feeding not only these kids but also their families if not only they stay in school but get satisfactory grades.
Now that we know that they are in school and not in some kid army(we have none) lets talk about the pcs: they arent going to the kids, but to the schools and the teachers will be trained on how to teach with the help of the machines and with the many softwares available today for grammar, math, etc...
So as you can see maybe you will have to wait a little more for your pcs or maybe you will have to wait untill the comercial 200$ version is available

Oh yeah????

Are you stewped? These kids are going to break them within 1 Years time and are going to have to get ,Dell technical Support if they ever manage to keep them for more than 1 week from the local thiefs and the town rapist. They'll mostly be sold off for parts and money for drugs and weapons.
*God, you seriously don't know how the Third-World works.. If you give them something that they've never seen or don't even know how it works they'll screw it up better than Tommy Lee screwed Pamela Anderson, if they manage not to keep it with them for more than 1 week then, they'll go from the camera shoot actors(Kids) to the Black Market for parts and things in a matter of weeks if not days :D

P.S. Just my Prediction

I tend to agree with your prediction. I remember walking through the markets in Croatia just at the end of the Balkan War. At least 80% of the products for sale were humanitarian relief supplies. We seem to forget that $100 can be six months salary in Africa. Anyone who thinks that Daddy is going to go plucking dinner out of the trashheap while Sonny is posting on MySpace needs more psychiatric care than the people who hand out these things.

BBC: Corruption Costs Africa $148 Billion/Year.

They don't even have dumpsters, let alone anything in them to pluck out, you self centered and arrogant pricks. Obviously, the concept of appreciation is foreign to a couple people here.
BTW, there are over 200,000 child soldiers in Africa. If nothing else, things like this give hope at least, which is something that currently is non-existant. Pull your head out of your collective pompous asses. Actually, no, keep it there. It's the most appropriate place for them from what i've witnessed.Im glad we agree, if everyone thought like the people in here things would never change, I think the olpc is a great thing, if third world people in africa, asia, latin america, and other places have the resources to bring themselves up, we should all encourage our fellow man. These attitudes are unbelivable and a byproduct of the mindset of the U.S.A today.

I guess we can agree to disagree, i thank god for the bono's,brad pitts, oprahs, and angela jolies of the world, we need more people to just care. People in the third world shouldnt be talked down about because of where they wer born in the world, they should be given the resources to make changes to who and where they are. Im sure they will be some success stories coming out of this project. Help the people to help themselves.
