I never understand why people don't identify tablet device as a PC. It is a personal computer, just different class (like server, desktop, laptop, and netbook). The tardiness of Microsoft to produce a user friendly OS to support touch input which lead to the majority of this class of PC using other OS doesn't make tablet not a PC. Having MS OS installed into a device doesn't automatically qualify a device as a PC. Just like you wouldn't identify a linux OS desktop as not a PC or identifying a Window 7 Mobile Phone as a PC.

Seriously... Your rethoric on this matter is turning out just a little bit repetitive and annoying. PC's aren't going anywhere, stop making articles like this. You're becoming tiresome and sounding like a fanboy. Smartphones and tablets do have their place in our days and days to come, but will never replace the PC. They just won't. Get over it. As long as there are computer enthusiasts, that will never happen. And computer enthusiasts will never die. By the way, I've tried the Windows 8 developer preview, Linux Ubuntu with Gnome3 / Unity interface and MacOs Lion. And I didn't like it. None of them. I'm a PC user, I don't want a touch-screen-optimized, dumbed down, fascist UI. I'm a PC power user and, don't be fooled by the sales charts, there are many people like me, even more in this site. And your articles don't belong to the user base of this site. Quit.

Saving?....saving ? ..seriously ?
...Food for thought..what is used to develop all those apps for smart phones and tablets ?
(and don't say Macs as they are also a PC by definition )

Don't know about the PC, but firing Wolfgang Gruener will save Tom's Hardware!

[citation][nom]V8VENOM[/nom]I would like Microsoft to just FIX what they currently have, introduce less OS bloat and not more, make it run faster, put an end to ridiculous error messages that your average user could possibly understand nor what to do if they get one. And for the goodness sake, if there is a problem during boot up sequence, communicate that problem to the end user ... and do it in a meaningful way, not a BSOD, not some cryptic message about XYZ.DLL unexpected exception ... how about telling us the significances behind XYZ.DLL ... like for example "your mouse has a problem, please try the following to resolve ... ".[/citation]
Like any other OS says what the file is for if it's missing. Then there's the problem that many dlls are made by third party.
[citation][nom]V8VENOM[/nom]Bottom line, Windows 8 is an interesting idea with not practical application.[/citation]We'll have to wait and see. Windows isn't the only that got a makeover to become more touch friendly, take a look at ubuntu.

[citation][nom]V8VENOM[/nom]Home PC's will never be replaced, even less likely for anyone that works on them 8-14 hrs a day. Current and future battery technology just isn't capable and there is NO sign of any future break thru in battery technology both in size, capacity, and charge duration ... I mean NONE, not even a suggestion we'll see any "significant" improvements in battery technology[/citation]
There is always a way round a problem instead of trying to solve it, the idea of a wireless power grid in the home has been touted, entirely possible that you could walk within the confines of your home without plugging in and the battery is for when you exit the property, to be charged again by the wireless power grid in Starbucks or McDonalds. The same way you can get wifi will become a power source. Even something a silly as the back of a tablet being coated in carbon nano-tube solar panel collectors, 1000 times more efficient at collecting power, simply walking down a lit hallway or outside on a cloudy day could power your tablet.
All these ideas are either in development or already partially in use (like the wirless charging mat) so the only way these inventions can go is better.

[citation][nom]toorudez[/nom]And how, pray tell, do I use Autodesk Civil 3D on a tablet, or a touch screen monitor? Excel spreadsheets, MS Word, etc. would be next to impossible to use via touchscreen. Whom ever drabs on about the PC disappearing needs to give their head a shake. Did you write this article on a tablet? Probably not.[/citation]

+1 Toor, or any other similar tool(s) for that matter.

Not only this, but try putting in nested formulas in a worksheet on a tablet ..... so IMO all those who are predicting PCs are going the way of dodo are just talking ********.

Fox News reports that Win 8 will leave behind all software that is not specifically written for it. Flash in particular (Hey! someone needs to re-write the internet!) and it will make a walled garden for Microgeeks.

Hows them apples eh?

its hilarious reading the comments from the clueless windows 8 haters. MS released a freakin apha version of windows 8 you really think this is the way the final versio is going to be. god you people are stupid but i guess this is the same crowd who try to put vista on and 800mhz PC with 512MB of ram

lol cant believe ppl are whining cause of the metro UI.
Windows is just windows, it has a diferent interface, so what?
"oh, i dont have the start button zomg!"
And metroui can be turned off btw, the same way you can turn off aero and the eyecandy from win7/winvista/winxp and then it will also look like the win95 interface like in those windows versions (probably)
So it can run smoother in the crappiest pc ever

What will make the diferente in this win8 it will be the new stuff, (ex: xbox live) and ofc we hope for a "win7 like stability" or better if possible.
Or Else it will be doomed like vista.

Did anyone reading the [citation][nom]amk-aka-phantom[/nom]Lol wtf? I'm not trying to replace Wolfgang... that guy has got quite some time to waste and a real talent for BS rage-inspiring articles. I think that Tom's should keep him for the lulz and to show its readers what happens when you smoke too much tablet weed. I'm merely trying to express my opinion, so please keep your sarcasm to yourself......but in unlikely case you were serious, your suggestion is welcome xD[/citation]

I'm wondering if anyone bothered reading the very last sentence: "My personal opinion? The PC is not going to die anytime soon."

People love to jump to conclusions, don't they? Either that, or they're just looking for a scapegoat, and Wolfgang is it.

People do not buy PCs for their software. People buy PCs for the HARDWARE, period. Unless Win8 ships with hardware, it will have no effect whatsoever on the PC industry.

What exactly is the great innovation in the text above? Connecting an airplane to a car, calling it "multi purpose mobile", is that true "innovation"? Some people might have reasons not to leave their fatty fingerprints on a computer screen or not to connect a coffee machine to a hair dryer.
