So I currently have the Patriot Scorch 256 as my boot drive and i also have an incoming b450m steel legend and the 970 evo.

How do i go bout transfering the os from the 256 to the 500 gb one. Also will switching the slots after the transfer not cause the pc to not recognize it as a boot drive? I had a case in the past when i had the OS on an HDD and switched its SATA slot caused it to not boot but when i returned it to the old slot it recognized it again.

Solution
Okay. Then I think I have no choice now :v is there anyway i could download the ISO file for Win10 so that i dont have to update again when i install fresh? Also will my other drives work fine even after the motherboard change?
Sure.
This outlines the whole procedure, starting with creating your own USB to boot from

And you do the install with only the ONE drive connected.

Also:
For the OS activation, read and do this before you change any parts:

You're getting a new motherboard as well as the new 970 EVO?
What is the current motherboard?

A fresh install on the new drive, in the new system, is strongly recommended. Probably required.

Current, is as my signature says, Asus x370 Prime Pro. I just want my old data to be transferred, if performance declines then i would just do a fresh install.

I'm saying...it may not even boot up.
With either the original Patriot drive, or a clone of that on the 970.

For your personal data....while the current system is still running, you copy that off to some other storage device. Which you need to do anyway.
Especially during a major hardware change.

Okay, okay i get it but i might just use a USB and make it bootable using rufus (idk for me the download seems faster when only downloading the ISO file)

Sorry for repeating this but will my hard drives still work and be recognized once installation is all said and done?

It is downloading the exact same amount of data. Rufus is not any "faster".
The MediaCreation tool is the recommended thing to use for this.

And yes, your drives should be recognized.

Sorry but last question, why would it not be possible that i could just use my current m2 into the new mobo before doing a clean install? The 970 might be days away from me receiving the item.

And as said, it may simply fail to boot up.

New motherboard + old drive and OS, 3 possible outcomes:
  1. It works just fine
  2. It fails completely
  3. It "works", but you're chasing issues for weeks/months.
I've seen all 3.

A fresh install in the new system, whichever drive, is strongly recommended, possibly required.

Ohhh okay i guess i might just use it for just a few days then just do a fresh install when my 970 comes. I hope it works just fine. Thank you! Youve been such a big help :)
