Overclocking a Dell XPS 8000 i7

Hello there forum. I'm new so, take it easy on me

Yes, yes, I know what ya'll are thinking - "You bought a Dell? BLASPHEMY! Offffff with your head!"

But seriously.....

I want to Overclock this machine and I've done a lot of research on what affects overclocking and what needs to be taken in to consideration before overclocking. However, I'm kinda stuck on the part: "is my machine even overclockable" since I read that certain motherboards don't allow you to do that.

My motherboard according to CPU-Z is a 0X231R and my chipset is Ibex Peak P55. My CPU is an i7 860. My ram is 4x1GB DDR3 running at 1067MHz. My Power Supply Unit is a feable 350W.

There is of course a heatsink on top of my CPU. There is no water cooling system or anything of a similar nature.

Is this overclockable?

Well good question !... if you really want to overclock build a cheap system and test it. Never buy any pre-made system as 99% of the time its locked you wont overclock it not even by 0.1GHz.Dell falls under the "no overclock" unless you want to flash using third party firmware that can leave your motherboard bricked and useless.

So on your next computer try building one...its easy and for what you payed for that dell you could have probably bought better quality parts (and a 500w+ quality psu like Corsair etc).

I've actual made intention to build my own computer in the near future. I'm actually thinking of selling this one.....Not sure what to do with it just yet.

It's got three years of complete care premium accidental warranty so...I guess that's the good side to it.

But yeah, i'm definitely going to build my own in the future.

this is the exact reason i sold my dell xps 8000(i5 750). i ended up using it for a year and loosing about $200 selling it. (paid $840). its wasnt overclockable. it had a gt 220 and to upgrade the gpu i would have had to buy a new case/psu..and tbh thats almost half the computer. in the end i wish i kept and used it as a family computer because i cant seem to keep anyone off my beast

I wish I didn't buy this PC. I've seen a XPS 8100 on eBay that has a 10x better graphics card HD 5770, 8GB RAM 1333MHz (more MHz than mine and 4GB more than mine!!!!!!) 1TB Hard Drive (500GB more than mine) and it is going for £650...I paid £600 for mine...

I am extremely fortunate but...stuff like this makes me want to cry.

Don't be sad ! your pc very fast for Game & graphic !
OC for brechmark & performance, sometime do OC can waste money or Success ! & success for what...?
OC no warranty !

I think i'm just going to leave this PC alone....I would like to overclock it by a little bit but...I don't think that's going to happen with the given motherboard etc.

i have a dell xps 8000 got told by dell that i could'nt upgrade the psu so i did put a 650 watt in now just added a new cooler and gtx 470 seems to run ok for me allthough i would like to know if it is possible to over clock it as it looks as if the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu oh well i guess i will be building my own next time the amount of extras on it now might aswell have lol

Lol chill, dude the 8100 was a failure, it had a 10x worse CPu then the 8000, and your ram is at a no difference level for games. the 5770 is pretty pathetic anyway, it gets pwned by a 5830, and if you by a 550W cpu you could EASILY upgrade your gpu to the 5830 5850, or 5870!

I bought a Dell XPS 8000 2 years ago, and yes it came with a Liteon 350w psu. I just upgraded it to 500W silverstone strider essential and 8G corsair vengeance (running at 1333). Spend less than $100 for that, and i am planning on upgrading the GT240 to Radeon HD 6850.

XPS 8000 is not entirely dead end unit..yet 😛. Maybe you can do similar upgrade like most of us XPS 8000 user did if you want to have a better gaming experience. Is that why you want to OC your CPU?
