Hello guys!

I have this processor : AMD x3 415e 2.5ghz
and a motherboard : GA-M720-US3 (updated BIOS and chipsets)

(8 GB ram ddr2, amd r7 240 2gb ddr3, win 10 64bit)

I tried using AMD overdrive, but it says that it can not find the AMD chipset..
I don't know how to overclock it in the BIOS, I somehow managed only to reduce the processor frequency, don't know how!

I can take a photo of the BIOS options if that helps?
and what are your tips?

P.S. I know it is an old processor, but I still want to get the most out of it, heating is not an issue, I have a strong heatsink and a cooler.

Hi,

I used to mess around a lot with the old AM3 processors so this is a bit of a blast from the past! With respect to AMD Overdrive, this is a new utility AMD launched with socket AM4 (Ryzen), it isn't supported by the older AM3 / AM3+ platform unfortunately.

With regards to overclocking that Athlon - apparently that processor is multiplier locked, so the only way you can over clock it is to increase the base clock (the speed the cpu runs at is the base clock multiplied by the core multiplier , in your case a 200 mhz base frequency x 12.5). You should be able to change the base clock a bit to boost speed, but keep in mind the base clock also controls other things in the system (such as the PCIe bus for the graphics card) so increasing it too far can cause stability issues.

What I would suggest, that motherboard you have supports all the Athlon and Phenom II processors, so you could get a big performance boost (and full overclocking support) by getting something like a Phenom II X4 or Phenom II X6 second hand - I doubt something like a Phenom II 945 would cost much these days and those can be pushed quite high frequency wise.

Hey man!
I just ordered a phenom II 945, 20$ at that!

Do you have some advice on how to overclock it? I mean if you know some safe settings in the BIOS?

Oh and I tried overclocking the x3 415, 250mhz at x12.5, increasing the voltage, but it booted into safe mode until I changed them back, do I increase it just a bit, and if..how much?

Thanks in advance!

The Phenom II is much easier to overclock as it's unlocked - so the safest way to overclock it is to increase the cpu multiplier (that way it leaves all other components running at standard settings).

With regard to settings, here is a toms guide for overclocking a 955 (pretty much the same cpu just clocked a little higher out of the box):
https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/reviews/overclock-phenom-pentium,2366-8.html

They got it up to 3.8ghz, you will probably get similar from that 945, maybe a little less - and as the article says a lot is down to cooling, if you have a strong cooler you may get a little more.

Thank you so much, had it done quickly and nicely, overclocked and stable too.
Thanks a lot
