Can anybody please help me find out if any motherboard will support the voodoo 5 5500 64MEG agp. I love this card for gaming and graphics CURENTLY 1GIG P3/512 PC133 2x60 MAXTOR ATA-133, But I have the need for speed !! I want a 1.8 northwood and 512 ddr but cant find anybody who can make this voodoo/p4 combo work it needs 3.3volt signalling not 1.5 LOOK HERE FOR ARTICLE)http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/15118.html
PS THANKYOU FOR YOUR TIME AS I AM STUMPED ON THIS ISSUE!!

Ahhhhhhh, i love the smell of burnt plastic in the morning.

Ye shall remain stumped! There is no compatibility. You must UPgrade from your lowly voodoo5. CompUSA finally got rid of all theirs...they sold all their 5500's AS IS for 49 dollars apiece....heh.

You are correct.

<A HREF="http://ftp://download.intel.com/technology/agp/downloads/SpecUpdate06-21.pdf" target="_new">1 AGP3.0 cards can physically plug into an AGP 1.5 volt or universal connector but
will not function. AGP3.0 cards need to protect their inputs if there is a possibility
of any damage due to a 1.5 V signal level from the motherboard. AGP3.0 cards
can use the MB_DET# signal level to determine if it needs to take necessary
precautions. Since the AGP3.0 card does not support the signaling mode of the
motherboard component, it must not attempt to respond to any cycle (e.g. PCI
configuration cycle). <b><font color=red>AGP3.0 cards will also need to strap TYPEDET# to indicate
1.5 voltage level, otherwise an AGP Universal motherboard may drive 3.3V to the
card.</b></font color=red>
2 AGP cards can plug into an AGP3.0-only motherboard but will not be powered and
will not function. The motherboard must detect that GC_DET# is not asserted and
remove power from VDDQ pins.</A>

This was taken from page 66 of the <i>Draft AGP V3.0 Interfage Specification</i> from Intel.

Basically you need to get a board with Universal AGP which is under the AGP 2.0 standard. Again under what is stated above, this <b>may</b> drive 3.3V to the card. Call Asus Tel: +1-502-995-0883 (Please select Option 3. Hours for TSD: 5:30 am to 5:00 pm (PST) Pacific Time)
For faster service please call during our off peak hours of 5:30 am to 9am and 11am to 1:30 p.m Pacific Standard Time.

Now I am not 100% positive that this board is a Universal AGP board. Call Asus.

I stand corrected, learned something today.

However...
/ramble on

You used SIS and P4 in the same sentence. Thats bad luck. Though Asus has yet to bomb in my book... If you can afford an Asus p4 you can afford AT LEAST a R8500 or TI 4200. If you can do that...why SIS chipset...wait for the intel chipset. The only REAL reason for buying p4 over AMD is maximum compatibility, and to get that you gotta go pretty much all intel on chips and processors. No mixing. You must be stuck on quake 2 or something if your loving a Voodoo5 still...

I know for a fact the TI 4x00 cards are visually superior in every way to voodoo and voodoo isnt compatible with more and more games.

not nearly so as TI 4x00's and R8500's. Full openGL 1.3 support. Don't get me wrong, i love voodoo's, i used em tell they went under. But, its time to put the 3 leg dog to sleep. Move on... get a card with good supported drivers and current specs and capabilities. With prices today...there's no excuse.

I agree with you but if the man wants to keep his card it is our job to help him find a board that will support it.

Job? You get paid for this?

Hey, i just learned myself that such a thing existed. I'm just absolutely shocked someone's willing to spend that kind of money to use a voodoo5...

If you give me that compatibility garbage again I'm going to kill you.

It's this backward talk that makes Intel overpriced. They feed on misinformed comments like these.

The only reason to get a P4 is to overclock, not for that compatibility non-sense. SiS has a license from Intel on the P4 FSB design. VIA does not. What this means is that SiS has Intel's blessing to make chipsets, while VIA does not if that means anything to you.

Thanks for all the help I'll probably go for the asus p4s533 with a 1.6 northwood /512 /256 ddr333
and clock around 2.1.
The reason i am trying to keep this card is cuz i it cost me 300 bucks when new 2 years ago !!! argh and i cand seem to part with it . The voodoo 5 kicks a geoforce 2/64 meg/w tv-o made by powercolor, When I play max payne on full settings for eye candy the game rocks without a hickup .with the geo there are mass visual slowdown .. thats not playing in bullet time ether lol.
also a have intel d815eea mobo /2X60 ata133 maxtor 512 pc133 17"samsung 753
so if i put the geo in this rig an buy a dvd/small quiet5200rpm 20 gig hd i have a perfect network gaming/divex viever for my tv.. ps is there anything to improve text quality for net tv surfing ?
new rig will be asus p4s533 /256 to start ddr333
p4 1.6 @ 2.1ish voodoo 5 5500 64meg agp 166mhz @ 189 mhz
2x60gig maxtor 7200rmp ata-133 not bad I think .this card should still be good for a fer more years with a 2.1 gig cpu backing it dont you think ??
Ps thanks for all the posts . I would have liked to reply to all of them but i need to get some sleap lol. I'll be back.

P4's have fewer compatibility problems than Athlons. Period. I will continue saying that till its no longer true. That is in NO way saying Athlons have problems or are worse than p4's. VIA is the largest contributor to all incompatibility problems. I dont have a problem with SIS, but i have had a problem with them in the past, that was a joke when i made that comment from something that happened to me in the past, you dont have to light off everytime someone says something. Intel is overpriced, a very small part of that is because of their compatibility testing which has no effect on VIA problems anyhow. The rest is due to their insane R&D programs most of which should be cut and thrown out yesterday as AMD has proven. I hate VIA, i abhor VIA, i take every oportunity to slam VIA, i will never buy VIA. VIA is not a good company, i would take this opportunity to compared it to Microsoft. I have no problem with SIS other than getting burned once many years back. I'm sure SIS is a fine company now and yes, they do have a liscence to make p4 chipsets and thats cool.

Now, once again in response to that thing about compatibility. All intel is king of compatibility _|_. But Athlons w/non-via motherboards are fine so long as you take care to make sure that all your parts will fit right and have drivers that arent complete crap (GF4's and all creative products).

Back to the origional thread topic, an asus/sis/p4 board with universal AGP should be a damn fine product and i feel confident recommending it without ever having used it as Asus is a A+ company. And i'm sure you'll be happy using your V5 on it. (at least for a couple more weeks)

/me casts flame reflection IV on self.

I agreed that is not a AMD issue except the USB 2 on MPX chipset.VIA/SIS is allwayse way faster that intel to releasing chipset.less testing time????

cheap, cheap. Think cheap, and you'll always be cheap.AMD version of semi conducteur industrie

I got a respone from Allan Gu over at Asus and he said...

"You can choose our P4S333 series motherboard which support both AGP 1.5V and AGP 3.3V."

<A HREF="http://usa.asus.com/mb/socket478/p4s333/overview.htm" target="_new">Link to the Asus P4S333 Overview.</A>

I hope that helps.
