Hi!

First of all sorry for the long post but I need some opinions on what could cause the issue I'm facing with my custom build PC, I tried to be as detailed as possible because I'm at my wits end.

To give some context, 2 years ago I decided to upgrade some components in my PC. The components I bought were:
- Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk b450
- CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
- RAM: GSkill Ripjaws 16GB 3200
- PSU: Cooler master MWE 650W Gold

I swapped the components and my PC started and ran fine. After a couple of months of usage the system suddenly shutdown abruptly (like a power outage) and didn't want to start up again. To be more precise (see video attached): I press the power button. The motherboard rgb lights, the case fans, CPU fan, PSU fan turn on for split second and immediately turn back off. When pressing the power button again nothing happens. I unplug the power cable from the PSU, press the power button a couple of times and plug the power cable back in. Now the lights and fans turn back on for a split second like before and the issue process repeats.

I began to investigate, I suspected a faulty PSU. I had my old components still laying around so I swapped the PSU with my old Corsair one. I was able to start the PC again with the old PSU and had no issues anymore. I sent back the Cooler master PSU to the store under warranty. I got a reply that they tested the PSU and it worked on their end, they couldn't find any issue with it.

Anyway that period I've had less and less time to spend on my PC so I basically didn't use it for multiple months. I now recently moved to a new place and wanted to setup my PC again. I connected everything and started the system only to see the same issue as described before happening. I didn't really know what to do from that point on. I switched back to the new Cooler master PSU and magically the system turned on again. At that point I thought I was going crazy but was happy that it worked so I used my PC for a couple of hours and boom it shutdown again. Same issue as before. I then suspected a overheating issue since I didn't check the temps when the system was running. I re-seated the CPU and mounted the stock AMD cooler but no luck, same issue as described before. I then fully stripped down the system. So I put the motherboard on my desk with only the CPU, 1 RAM slot used and the PSU 24pin + CPU power cable connected. Still no luck same issue except for one time where it turned on for about 10 seconds and shutdown again. It also couldn't be the case power button since I manually connected (jumped) the power pins on the motherboard from this point on.

I then suspected the motherboard even though I found it weird since the RGB lights would turn on for a split second and the system had ran before for a couple of hours with no issue. What happened next drove me nuts, I ordered the MSI tomahawk b550 board and came home to swap the board. Before I did I tested one more time with the current desk setup. I connected the power cable to the PSU flipped the power switch, jumped the power pins on the motherboard and you wouldn't believe it but the 'system 'turned on (motherboard RGB lights on, no DEBUG lights, CPU fan spinning). The dumb thing is I didn't connect a monitor to see the output that was my bad. I shutdown the system and tried one more time before putting everything back in the case. Same issue as before, wouldn't turn on.

Next I unboxed the b550 motherboard, seated the CPU and RAM and connected the CPU and 24pin motherboard power cable to test the new board. It turned on (again didn't connect a monitor which is stupid I know). Since it all seem to work. I put everything back in the case and turned on the PC. It successfully ran for a couple of hours, I checked the temps while I was on it and they all seemed fine. I was installing games and browsing for a couple of hours when the system suddenly shutdown again (no windows shutdown, it looks like a power outage shutdown). Same issue as before. I began removing part by part to see what could cause the issue since it just ran for a couple of hours without issue. But it wouldn't turn on even though I stripped it again to only the required parts (CPU, 1 RAM stick, CPU power and 24pin cable)

Now I still have the same issue as before and tried everything I can think of, this includes:
- re-seating the CPU multiple times
- re-seating RAM, swapping sticks, only inserting in 1 slot
- swapping the PSU
- re-connecting power cables
- removed CMOS
- different wall socket
- different power cable

Also worth noting that I went over this checklist provided on the forum.

TLDR

PC abruptly shutdown, doesn't want to turn on again (only for a split second do the fans spin and are the RGB lights turning on). stripped every component to only the bare minimum (CPU, 1 RAM stick, CPU and 24pin motherboard power) still doesn't start. Swapped the PSU, worked for a couple of hours. Then same issue (= abrupt shutdown and won't start anymore). Swapped motherboard with new one, worked for a couple of hours. Then again same issue.

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards

Ok update, still on breadboard setup. New motherboard (MSI tomahawk B550) new CPU (Ryzen 5 5600X) experienced same issue a couple of times. I once got it to run but only into BIOS never in windows since that motherboard also didn't recognize my NVME SSD (Samsung EVO 970). Switched the motherboard and CPU again for a Gigabyte b550 aorus elite v2 and a Ryzen 5 5600 and have the same issue... Won't power on only for a slit second. I'm really lost here.

If you ever get it figured out I’d appreciate an answer as well because I’m having the exact same problems. I replaced the PSU and it started working fine again but it’s shutting down again and acting like a PSU problem yet again. I’m thinking it’s a CPU issue at this point
