Hi all,

I am seeking some assistance from the tom's Hardware collective please to stop me going insane!

First I guess the info of the system:

Windows 10 Pro, build 19044 (up to date)
I9 9900K, not overclocked - bios all default settings / auto
2x8GB Corsair DDR4 2132 w/XMP @ 3596 - non XMP profile loaded
MSI Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon
Nvidia 3090Ti FE
1000w EVGA 80+ modular PSU
Crucial CT250 MX200 SSD for Operating System
Corsair MP600 Core 2TB SSD for game installs
2x WD 2TB standard HDDs
Widescreen 2560x1080 (so not many pixles!)
Quest 2 @ 1.6x SS / 90hz

I built this system around Jan 2022 (originally with my titan XP, then upgraded to 3090ti later in the year).

My issues started not long after building the PC, I purchased BF2042, and when I was playing the game, I experienced random locking up of the PC, with no mini dump, or system errors, only buttoning and rebooting would free up the PC.

I could play a game sometimes for 2 hours or so, other times maybe I couldn’t even play a single round and the PC would lockup.

At this time I had XMP profile loaded, and was running a titan XP. I have only experienced one other lockup, and that was after around 3-4 hours of Warzone, but mostly, all games run OK.

Fault finding:

Re-installed game
Tweaked XMP profile, as notice manufacturer timings differed to what bios was recommending, but still locked up
Removed XMP and set to default speed
Reset bios / CPU settings all to default and auto
Ran numerous OCCT tests, RAM and CPU tests passed
Conducted GPU stress tests with furmark - all passed
Memcheck – passed
Thermals checked – all good (CPU rarely more than mid 60’s, GPU same)
OCCT power test (crashed / locked after around 3 hours)
Checked 3.3v, 5v and 12v for any instability (only via software OCCT) – all good
Underclocked GPU RAM and core clock / reduced power target
Removed / reinstalled GPU drivers
Scanned all HDDs / checked for errors
Fresh install of Windows 10
Added Corsair NVME and fresh install of all game to a new / different HDD
Swapped PSU power connectors to GPU
Have since changed GPU to 3090ti

When the machine locks up, it is often during title screen, loading, after game, although can happen during game.

During last lockup:
CPU @ 49% utilisation
CPU package temp 57c
RAM @ 12GB usage
Disk 0, 1, 2 @ 0% (disk 0 OS volume)
Disk 3 @ 5% (game SSD)
Ethernet usage high-ish 344kbps
GPU usage 11%
GPU power 27%
VRAM 6579mb
GPU temp 53c

There is never anything in the event log I can see other than unexpected shutdowns / kernel power caused by me buttoning.

I also play VR, and I run @ 1.6SS, so that is 5408x2736, this depends on title but according to EVGA my GPU usage can vary from 60ish up to 90% or so. I play Project cars for hours, no problem, and other games such as Alyx, utilising over 16GB VRAM and with high GPU utilisation with no crashing.

The only needle I can find is that last night, on one of the crashes I sat and waited (I have before for a long time and never a BSOD or error), one of my screens went almost black and I did get a BSOD!) now this may be a coincidence, but anyway it was ‘DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION’ and I had at least a dump file:

Bug check description:The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above. This could be caused by either a non-responding driver or non-responding hardware. This bug check can also occur because of overheated CPUs (thermal issue).
Analysis:This is likely caused by a hardware problem, but there is a possibility that this is caused by a misbehaving driver.
This bugcheck indicates that a timeout has occurred. This may be caused by a hardware failure such as a thermal issue or a bug in driver for a hardware device.

So I removed and cleaned AVG in safe mode – still had a lock up in BF2042.

When this BSOD was generated thermals were fine, I want to add that on custom settings in BF with everything on ultra, and all additional settings enable, my GPU rarely goes about 38%, so GPU temps in BF are normally in the 50’s or lower, and CPU never goes over mid 60’s.

Windows debugger tells a slightly different story though?

In a last ditch attempt at anything meaningful, I noticed some DPC watchdog errors related to iastora.sys, and so re-installed the driver for the OS SSD, but you guessed it, still several lockups this evening, resulting in me buttoning the PC and no dump files, nothing I can see being meaningful in event viewer.

I am now leaning towards a PSU issue, it is after all, 7 years old now! However, if BF2042 is taxing my system less overall than running 14 million pixels in VR, and drawing a hell of a lot more power, how can it be stable there and fall over when ticking over in BF2042?

The PSU is a single rail, but I am not familiar with how the CPU / mobo circuit works vs PCIE and HDD supply.

My other thoughts were HDD, but the OS HDD although also an older crucial drive from a previous build seems reliable – no vanishing files, no corrupt files or weirdness, no errors.

With power ‘appearing’ stable in VR and OCCT tests I am not sure.

Perhaps I got a dodgy stick of RAM, but memtest checks out, and OCCT memory tests always seem to work just fine using 95% of memory.

Maybe I got a dodgy CPU? But a CPU burn or stress test at 100% also seems stable (I’ve done more memory and CPU tests this eve on OCCT and all good, no errors).

So then motherboard? But again, seems to be OK?

I will check my motherboard bios, but I am pretty sure when these crashes started it was also up to date at the time, although another release may be out now.
So here I am, I have a PC with all ‘new’ parts in this build other than OS HDD and old PSU. But it would be great to actually pin point the issue without throwing money at something that doesn’t need replacing.

My only other thought is to perhaps play with the CPU voltage, it runs at 1.286v max on auto, with package power around 117w. Temperatures aren’t an issue, so did I get a bad one that just needs more juice to run stable at the stock 4.68? Again if that is the case wouldn’t this manifest in VR?

Pretty much stumped guys, and if you’ve made it this far well done, and thanks for reading.

Seriously welcome any ideas / testing I can do to pin this one down.

Thanks.

Bios updated to the latest Oct 2022, it says 'memory compatibility improved' and a few other items that are less interesting. I don't hold out any hope though!

I recommend using spoilers for long text like this.

I cannot see anything in the details that gives any clue, but if you can post the s.m.a.r.t. data of the storage devices (can use crystaldiskinfo - copy all to text and then paste reply here - use code tags) maybe it give some hints. A non-responding storage device may cause OS to not respond either.

Distinguished
Crucial CT250 MX200 SSD for Operating System
Corsair MP600 Core 2TB SSD for game installs

Added Corsair NVME and fresh install of all game to a new / different HDD

So your crucial mx200 has been hosting windows 10 the entire year?

I suspect a drive too

Well you have the 2tb corsair nvme why didn't you simply install the os on that you have 4tb of hdd storage so a 250gb ssd is basically a piece of junk that you probably don't even really need attached to your system anyway.

So stash any data on the 2tb corsair on your hard disk drive, and copy your my docs from your crucial windows disk to keep saved games data, to a hdd too, and what else you want to keep, docs, pics, emails, whatever, and for the moment disconnect all other drives, sata and power cables, and run a clean install with only the corsair disk attached.

So now we're testing the system with only the corsair nvme drive installed. After you have completed windows setup you can reconnect your hdd's if you want to reload some games from backup or something .

See what happens.

I note that your corsair 2tb is pci-e nvme is gen 4 while your mobo supports gen 3 - not a problem since gen 4 is backwards compatible with gen 3 only it doesn't run full speed is all it wouldn't cause it to crash or any problems.

So it might just be that crucial mx it is an honest to god cheap lo end 2.5inch sata 3 ssd and likely you could easily buy a duff one off the shelf. Yet somehow you have also managed to workaround this glitching out for the best part of a year - not judging but that's a bit mind boggling. I flip if I get one bsod let alone a series of crashes.

Besides that any reason you didn't upgrade to windows 11? If you haven't done so already, register a microsoft account to your pc and so you get the digital license and you should be eligible for a windows 11 upgrade which you can do once this glitch has been figured out.

There's no technical reason not to do it and windows 11 has had some of the kinks worked out by now too - there were some gaming stuttering issues but that was I think affecting higher end systems anyway with the newest gen cpus so probably nothing you need to worry about.

There's also a few howtos and guides hidden away in various sections of the forum - just start on the main page of the forums and there'll be guides in each section just stuff to brush up on.

Particularly the power supplies section of the forum. Could you be a bit more specific of the exact model of your 1000w Evga 80+ - read the label or link the page/site you bought it from so it can be checked against the psu tier list

It's wattage is enough for a 3090 but the quality might not be tier a.

So the main suspect is simply the crucial mx200 it's simply a lo end drive hosting your os if that glitches, of course it would cause the system to crash.

Just means you have to faff around stashing windows stuff like saved games and data that might be stored in your user profile before you disconnect it. For the moment you can simply disconnect the disk, without deleting anything, add it back later but obviously you'll need to remove it from boot priorities in the bios so it doesn't load instead of your fresh install on the corsair nvme drive.

Just to check you could also re-connect each of your sata drives one at a time and road testing them by running a game on them, but if it was the drive hosting the os causing the problem it shouldn't crash with windows hosted on the corsair nvme so you should be able to reconnect all your drives without it crashing anyway.

I'm pretty sure when you get a dead drive only windows explorer crashes when you try to access it rather than bringing down the entire system but I've only had that happen occasionally ages ago on some really old drives.

Thanks. I've copied it out. I'm mistaken, I pulled one of the 2TBs a while ago and stuck it into another machine, so this has 1x2tb and 1x500gb older drive just to store photos and stuff on, but still 4x drives in the system 3x sata and 1x pcie.

Cheers,

Thanks, TBH, when I bought the crucial SSD (a long time ago!) it was pretty decent, it still has a faster write speed than most of the usual SATA SSDs. I did download crystal tools like advised and it has a health rating of 90%? Not sure what that means. I might copy the OS to the nvme and try that, or just buy a £30 SSD to save me formatting and reinstalling all my games to test if I can rule the SSD out.

S.M.A.R.T. info imo means diddly. It can't tell you everything. It means more in very intensive applications in an industrial park most home users simply can't wear out the nand before the warranty expires no matter what they do, or after. The nand flash memory tends to be overbuilt (some more than others) while the rest of the components vary in quality depending on the market, 'budget' or 'hi end'.

You can throw money at a new ssd if you like - your nvme is practically at least 10x faster than any sata 3 ssd at 3500mb/s on pci-e 3.0 so windows will run fabulous on it. Probably improve your gaming fps a tad too. Spending too much to reduce your overall performance makes little sense.

It does look rather inconvenient to do anything with that much data however so next time you get an nvme migrate the os to it immediately than fill it with data.

So bit of a duff move there, but if you want to run windows on your really fast nvme which is the principle purpose of it you'd have to go back to square one anyway.

Also pretty slow to copy a 2tb nvme to another 2tb hdd since the data transfer is only as fast as the hdd write speed so 2tb must be hours, if you could even make room for the data sounds like you must have a huge game library.

deleting and redownloading 10 50gb games is the same amount of data as 5 100gb games - much of a muchness only delete what you can redownload if you have to, what's the difference between 500gb and 500gb?

That sinking feeling if it turned out not to be the drive? Well your power supply and mobo are also pretty inconvenient and expensive to switch out though the tier B G1 Supernova with 10yr warranty still isn't tier A but it probably isn't transients anyway although the supernova g1 650 review says the transient response is really bad apparently you had a problem before installing a 3090.

The review of the 1000w g1 I found does not mention transient response but says it has good regulation and noise suppression and a 10yr warranty. Tom's did not review the g1 in my search results but did the g2 or 3 and g5.

Well it's kind of not 100% clear but I doubt transients from your 250w titan xp were your original problem only worsened by the 3090ti so that only leaves the crucial drive as the prime suspect. (imo)

The power supply has a ? about what does transient response really mean for power supplies anyway? I don't know enuf jargon. There are two maybes but crucially the crucial is more definitely than maybe while the g1 sounds good but not perfect.

Thanks for the reply.

So a quick update, I downloaded Windows 11, partitioned my NVME and installed a fresh / clean copy to the nvme.

I then went into Windows and installed gpu drivers and pointed to my warhammer directory (forgot to mention, I started playing warhamme the other day and it presents the same problem as bf2042, not heavy RAM, CPU or GPU usage, yet it locks also at random times, sometimes 20 mins, sometimes 40 mins).

I loaded the game and sat it idle for maybe 30 mins, then went into 1 game, and within a short time the PC locked up again, total up time 49 mins.

I have now reset bios to factory defaults, but all that did from the log was change from UEFI to UEFI / Legacy and boot order, so I had to reboot and change them back anyway.

I am about to pull the trigger on a 1250w cooler master as its about the only one that will get here before I go away over xmas.

My last attempts this evening will be, disconnect all HDD’s since the new install is only relying on content in the nvme and retry.

I am also currently running AIDA64 CPU and RAM stress test, 92% memory usage and 100%cpu, more than any game uses when it crashes. I am ruling out GPU seeing as it froze with the titan and the 3090ti, I guess also if it crashes tonight with other hdd’s disconnected then they are ruled out too.

If AIDA runs for a couple of hours, that is longest than the crashes I get running pancake games. Its still so frickin’ weird I’ve been running my GPU flat out in VR with no issues but pancake games using less freeze the damn machine!

So far AIDA is at 31mins, temps are averaging 70 degrees for cpu and mobo is at 34.

If I still get lock ups this eve, then its PSU, Mobo, CPU or RAM. Mobo, cpu and RAM has barely been used though, as I haven’t used my pc all spring and summer / part of autumn. And the lock ups in bf2042 started as soon as I built the machine. Surely with something like OCCT or AIDA stressing cpu and RAM, something would lock up if its an issue? Of course if I DO get a lockup, then it could still be PSU.

I do have a spare 750w evga psu, but I don’t think it wise to connect up, I mean, although gpu and cpu aren’t drawing too much during warhammer, it may not be a good idea?

Thanks.

PS. GPU 53% CPU 56% use and 11GB Ram when it crashed on the clean build. Could it be when the GPU and CPU etc is pulling more power from the PSU it is stable? But during less stress, somehow the power from the PSU is not as stable?

yeah 750w is under-doing it for a 3090ti

So what's the exact part number of the memory - just to check if it's on the support list well you said you got no errors on a mem test and corsairs are quite commonly used but there is a possibility it's off by one or two model numbers seen a case where that caused bsods where the memory would only work with xmp enabled when the memory wasn't strictly qvl compliant which is odd because usually non compliant memory might cause it to glitch out when when xmp is enabled (though I think that's more of a ryzen issue than intel).

Technically the correct procedure for a clean install of windows is to disconnect all the other drives first so the bootloader doesn't end up on the wrong drive - windows setup can do that sometimes.

partitioning the drive should be ok so yes good idea just try it running on one drive although it should work on any drive so the speed differential between the drives isn't an issue I think. Well I have a 980 with my os on it and run fallout 4 from an ssd without any probs.

so maybe power supply but well if you can, try the 'least inconvenient' steps first like switching the memory for something that's known qvl compliant if you have any. Ok so some people say support list compliance doesn't matter much but honestly what documentation do noobs have to go by otherwise? Experienced folks can stick their oars in if they want where are they?

AIDA has been running now for 1hr 30, and warhammer froze within 15 mins earlier…

I added in GPU stress test after 1hr 10, so now its all running pretty much flat out.

After stress test CPU for 1hr 30mins
Min CPU temps, 31,29,30,29
Max CPU temps, 90, 88,92,89
Ave CPU temps, 70,65,73,70

Mobo is at 47, average 36

Voltages after 1hr 30mins
Min
3.3v, 3.328
5v, 5.080
12v, 12.192

Max
3.3v, 3.424
5v, 5.160
12v, 12.384

Ave
3.3v, 3.389
5v, 5.135
12v, 12.278

Memory, 1.20v constant, unchanged.

GPU running 100% power, so far max 71, case sides are on and is about as hot as its going to get in there with RAM, CPU and GPU maxxed.

So far no freeze, time now 1hr 35min

Thanks for sticking with me! :)

CPU-z shows:

CMK16GX4M2D3600C18 which is on the supported list.

Same part no for each stick.

I did get lock ups with both XMP and non XMP profile loaded. I also noticed bios aet timings wrong for XMP profile, so I tried with it manually tweaked, but again still locked up.

I’m going to continue running AIDA to the 2hr mark, that will be way more prolonged CPU, GPU and high memory use than the pancake games that crash. I will then add in HDD for a further hour.

I’ve also ordered a 1250w 80 gold cooler aster PSU (mwe1250 v2), as thats just about the only alright looking one I could get this weekend.

I think the current plan of attack is let AIDA complete at about 3hrs of stress testing, reboot, disconnect the other HDD’s, try war-hammer again.

If it crashes, then maybe I can set vcore to 1.28 manually? Perhaps if there id a PSU issue it is more stable under constant voltage or load?

I guess if it still does it, I’ve ordered the PSU now, so I’ll just replace that and try again.

Failing that, I suppose I’ll then be into sourcing or ordering more memory to see if that helps.

If after all this I still have a problem who knows - haven’t got a clue how to test CPU further or MOBO.

I do keep hoping maybe it could be as simple as tweaking something in the bios, but I am for sure running out of ideas!

Ok well still not Tier A and still no Tom's Review so can't tell you anything about the Cooler Master mwe 1250v2 gold

besides to ensure that you remove ALL the modular cables and don't mix and match them between the power supplies because they are incompatible and will fry so strip out ALL the old power supply cables and don't try to save time by simply removing the psu alone - it all has to go and use ONLY the cables supplied with the MWE. OK?

So all you can do is try it. The bad transient response of the evga g1 is the only other clue I could find so leap to conclusions AFTER you have tested it with the MWE 1250.

What's been there all along is the CPU, MOBO, RAM and Crucial mx200 drive and the evga g1 power supply.

You changed the GPU and the problem persisted.

You (kinda) clean installed on your NVME and took the crucial out of the equation that still leaves CPU, MOBO, RAM and PSU.

Well it ain't a typical CPU crash I don't think. Not an obviously Typical ram crash either.

So still PSU and MOBO. A mobo could have bad capacitors on it that you wouldn't be able to detect. So could a power supply.

Still, groping in the dark a bit but hopefully the picture will become clearer the more you test things.

Thanks. One thing I forgot about is I am using PSU extension cables, white sleeved ones? I haven’t tried with those removed? But I’ve got a new PSU route on way anyway, so plan to plug psu in outside the case, and just directly connect its cable to everything to save a lengthy rebuild before testing. Voltages all look solid at the mo and within tolerance, so??

I’m now at 2hr mark, 1hr full cpu and ram stress test, then added in GPU and at 1hr in with that going 100%, so total time 2hrs (did not stop stress test just added gpu), now adding in ALL local hdds and will continue.

just remove anything that's non standard and try it and whatever you do don't plug a cable from your evga into the cooler master mwe and you should be ok don't personally know anything about psu extension cables never needed to use one but, yes I'd consider extension cables another suspect.

you really want to get the system into a 'barebones' state just the psu and it's cables which shipped with it and belong to it, only one drive, compliant memory, mobo, cpu & cooler, & gpu with the ram seated in the correct normal slots usually a2 and b2 innit?

Then test it before adding anything else. The only way you can find the problem is to 'breadboard' it so to speak and eliminate the suspects by process of elimination.

A couple of other quick observations.

Since I have been unplugging things and poling around inside the PC, I noticed today when I turn the PC PSU on at the back switch it makes a ‘pop’ noise. I am almost certain that this has not happened before and is not normal.

Also, I run an external DAC which I will disconnect tomorrow, when I switched off my speakers that are connected to the DAC, they made a clicking noise and a white flash was seen on my left screen ( was powering down PC and screens just went dark as I turned off the speaker power). So there was some interference from speakers through DAC to thr PC.

Of course could all be coincidental.

Stress test finsihed after 3hrs, no crash. System stable with eveything under heavy use.

Crash seemes to happen when power and use is lower and demand is up and down IE not regular like in stress test.

Not sure of that presents a clue? Sudden spikes or demand / changes in voltage required and this is when it freezes?

Not sure sounds like it's something to do with that 'transient response' but well a power supply that has a 10 year warranty doesn't necessarily mean it won't go wrong. It just means the manufacturer doesn't expect the majority of units to go wrong and they can turn a profit.

Doesn't look like stress testing is giving you much useful info it just crashes with regular usage. merely running a game.

As to who knows what might be wrong with it- better to ask their tech support since they should know more than most. You might be able to get a new one albeit still another tier b with a question mark about it's transient response for another 10 years. So tell 'em, makes a pop noise when you switch off and your pc crashes in normal usage but not in stress tests, they can only give you the runaround or understand the symptoms.

You've a fresh install of windows, installed all your drivers(?), tried a different gpu, and a different drive to host windows, memory is compatible, removed the extension cables, and run lots of stress tests.

Haven't asked if your mobo bios is the most recent but who wants to flash a bios when they aren't sure about a power supply? It's never a good idea to flash a bios in dubious power conditions anyway since the eprom is quite sensitive to errors. Though mainly it's problematical if the power goes out during the flash process.

So choices now, chase the warranty of your EVGA, or try it with the cooler master mwe - dunno if we're gonna get further flogging the horse, what else to do apart from a bios update? You don't have a spare mobo, cpu or mem but they must be ok to withstand so much stress testing, wouldn't you have expected them to go over in 5 minutes if they were faulty?

So just the power supply.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I disconnected all HDDs from PSU and MB and also I disconnected:

Webcam
Scarlet 2i4 DAC
Xbox gamepad dongle
Bluetooth dongle

Have been playing Warhammer for over 3hrs, no lockup...

That doesn't prove I guess its any of those devices and not the PSU, so I suppose I fit the new PSU then reconnect stuff one by one and test.

It could be a fluke though, so I am not reconnecting anything yet until I finish gaming tonight and will also try a session tomorrow AM before swapping PSU when it arrives, then starting to recconect stuff. Fingers crossed!

I'd keep using it until you get another crash, well I suppose it isn't a disaster to have another power supply spare just in case 'tis an expensive business to have spares though especialy since unused items are still using up their warranty time from date of purchase.

However it might make more sense to deduce which of these devices is causing you a headache.

Just saw this after I plugged the drives back in. So after plugging the three drives back in (USB devices still disconnected), I froze within 10 minutes of a game in Warhammer. So I disconnected the two normal HDDs and rebooted. Re-joined the game, and froze again within 10 mins. I then disconnected the old crucial SDD, and reconnected the HDDs, and I managed to finished the game, and I don't want to speak to soon, but still playing. So you may have been right all along! Will keep testing and report back.

Well, unfortunately it locked up again, after 1hr 30. So I went back to all srives unplugged and it locked up at 30 mins.

ARRRRRGH.

This has to be in alp my life building and playing with PC’s the biggest pain in the ass I have ever had.

So back to square 1, I’ll switch the PSU out tomorrow.
