PC Problem

Someone brought me their pc to look at. Supposedly, they couldn't download
files, access the floppy drive or write to the CD burner. I am starting to
suspect much more is wrong than that.

The computer will boot to the XP logon screen, show both his and his wife's
names and that is as far as I can get. The keyboard is dead. Mouse seems
to be okay, but the logon screen itself is at a low resolution.

The keyboard won't work at the BIOS/boot level either and I've tried 3
different keyboards. I've tried resetting the BIOS using the jumper on the
motherboard also. It won't boot to a floppy disk.

Does anyone have any ideas? E-machines 1.2ghz Celeron, Windowx XP Home.

Is the BIOS set to boot the CD? That is very likely with an
XP machine. Did eMachine ship a real XP CD with the
machine? If you have an XP CD try to boot it?

If you have the correct media you can do a repair install.

It will try to boot from the XP CD if I have it in the
drive, but when I'm prompted to "press a key to boot from
CD" I'm stuck because the keyboard won't work.

I have to resolve the dead keyboard issue before I can
attempt to fix anything else.

I can't access the BIOS without the keyboard either (no
jumper on mobo to boot into BIOS).

Could the keyboard port be dead or disabled? Can a
keyboard run on a serial port with a PS2 to Serial adapter?

See if a USB keyboard will work. It is certainly possible
that the PS/2 port could be damaged or they may have been
playing with their computer and disabled the port with the
device manager or it could have a virus.

BTW, are you completely sure that the keyboard is connected
to the keyboard PS/2 port and not the mouse port?

Yep, verified that I have everything plugged into the proper ports and tried
3 different keyboards. I thought about trying a USB keyboard - if I had
one. Guess I'll have to go buy one later.

One sure-fire fix, build them a computer with an Intel D865
or 875 or even an 845 chipset, a Celeron or P4 CPU... ;-)

Any idea what mobo eMachine used to build the computer?

I'd love to build him a new computer. I hate eMachines!

Motherboard is a Trigem Lomita Socket 370 mATX with i810
chipset.

The owner claims he used the pc last night and had no
problems with the keyboard. He's going to bring me his
keyboard and I'll try that. Maybe it's an eMachine thing
I don't understand. ;-)

While he's their show him what a good computer does.

Can you get a mobo manual for that thing?

After lots of fiddling with the connector and many reboots, the keyboard
would work most of the time. Looks like the PS2 port on their pc is the
problem. They don't have a problem using their own keyboard though (they
claim). I'll recommend a replacement USB keyboard.

By the way, got all of their other problems fixed.
Floppy drive - one of their kids inserted a credit card.
CD burner works fine.
Spyware removed.

Cash in my pocket.

Thanks, Jim, for all of your suggestions.

They'll have several choices on the new mobo...they can get
a replacement from eMachine and their OEM eMachine software
will still be legal and work with the BIOS. They can get a
retail motherboard that uses the same CPU and save a buck,
but might have some software issues (OEM) or they can buy a
whole new motherboard/CPU and really update (power supply
issue might be a problem).

Greetings --

What kind of keyboard, PS/2 or USB? If USB, try connecting a PS/2
keyboard to enter the BIOS and enable Legacy USB Support.

If you're using a PS/2 keyboard, try a USB keyboard and hope that
Legacy USB Support is already enabled. For a permanent fix, replace
the motherboard - the keyboard jack has failed.

Bruce, you missed the solution he found that the port was
buggered and they are replacing the mobo. The problem with
the floppy was that the kids tried to read a credit card.

Threads get lost, just wanted to let you know.

Someone brought me their pc to look at. Supposedly, they couldn't
download
files, access the floppy drive or write to the CD burner. I am
starting to
suspect much more is wrong than that.

The computer will boot to the XP logon screen, show both his and
his wife's
names and that is as far as I can get. The keyboard is dead.
Mouse seems
to be okay, but the logon screen itself is at a low resolution.

The keyboard won't work at the BIOS/boot level either and I've
tried 3
different keyboards. I've tried resetting the BIOS using the
jumper on the
motherboard also. It won't boot to a floppy disk.

Does anyone have any ideas? E-machines 1.2ghz Celeron, Windowx XP
Home.

Thanks for the info
