PC rebooting during gameplay

Hi Guys,

Herewith are my pc specs

Intel i5-3570k @ 3.4GHZ (No overclocking)
Asus Maximus V Gene Motherboard
12GB Corsair DDR3 Ram (CMP12GX3M3A1600C9)
Cooler Master X6 CPU cooler
GIGABYTE GV-N66TOC-2GD, GTX660 Ti
Corsair TX650 V2, 650w (12v : 636w), Eps12V, NVIDIA SLi ready, 8
OCZ Vertex 3 SSD as a primary

Now I have had this sytem running for about 3 month with no glitches, this evening when trying to play the usual set of games Dota 2 or CS:GO my pc decided to randomly reboot during gameplay. First time I thought it was just random, but this has been happening everytime now. Ive looked under Event viewer but no obvious faults that stand out.

Could this be a faulty PSU? Ive monitored temps on CPU and mobo and they sit around 30-40 degrees. Downloaded GPU-Z which I will use to monitor the GPU during gameplay. On idle it sits at 24.

Any of you have an idea of what it could be? I have a spare Thermaltake 470W psu, but not sure if that will be sufficient to run the GTX660Ti?

Ive logged the GFX card info in a log file and temps start at 25 and then got to 48 degrees and GPU load was at 66% when pc died.

Power Consumption [% TDP] was at 62% when pc died.

Windows Log only had this warning:
Name resolution for the name www.wwtech.co.za timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

Not sure if this info helps anything?

I would suspect a PSU issue or memory issue with a lean to memory.

The CMP12GX3M3A1600C9 memory was for the older tipple channel CPU's. Im not saying the memory wont work but it was the older 1.65 watt DDR3 so your issues could be related to not enough voltage. memory is rated 1600MHz, 9-9-9-24, 1.65V I would verify in the bios the timings and voltage. Personly I would get new memory in your shoes.

The Thermaltake 470W psu will run your PC. Since you have an extra PSU I would try that if setting the memory voltage and timings properly don't do the trick.

Ram was from my old i7 build correct, but just bought it at the time, so thought I would utilize it. In AI suite I have some timing info table, but I am not very clued up when it comes to that. (Will however do some reading on it, so I understand it better)

I know in bios you can set a gaming profile and play with a whole bunch of stuff, However as I said I dont know much about it. I am scared to change anything, as I tried once to make the ram run at 1600Hz and it wouldnt take it. As soon as I try anything up from the 1066Hz (default) it runs at, it doesnt load windows.

Will read up on what I should make the voltage and timing and try that.

Would this Ram be sufficient:

G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR, Sniper with heatsink, 8GB (2x 4GB), DDR3 1600, CL9, 1.5v, 240pin

or should I go with the Corsair Dominator GT equivalent? Sniper is 30% cheaper.

That memory would work fine but Im not big on the gimmicky heat sinks that do nothing.

Something like these that run at 1.35 volts is what I would recommend(the crucial RAM is the new 30nm processes so they are really short in height, extra clearance for CPU coolers :

Thanks! BTW fitted the Thermaltake PSU and played 2 hours of Dota and no restarting. Will test over the weekend to be sure. While it might have been the PSU, I will follow your advice and get myself the proper ram.

Sure no problem. With 8GB of memory sitting at $50 bucks I would just change it out even if it was the PSU.
