Hey guys! I have a core i5 6600k, GTX 1070 with 16gb Ram. I currently have a AW 24” 1080p 240hz TN monitor. I am considering switching to an ultrawide setup, 34 with 1440p and 120hz. I play Overwatch a lot at the low setting to achieve about 290-300 FPS.

However, I want to be able to use something other than a 1080p display, the text on webpages is just terrible and I would like to play at high, or ultra settings in Overwatch. I do play other games, just not as much

What type of upgrade would I need to make on my PC to achieve >120fps (the ultrawide Alienware has gsync as well) consistently? I’m willing to trade off some of the FPS, Hz, and ms from the 1080p for a better looking display and IPS.

Thanks a bunch!

If you really intending on buying an ultra wide monitor just for overwatch then I really don't recommend. Although the ultra wide experience is amazing with gaming and movies - I'm using an ultra wide myself right now. however, the problem is how overwatch handles the 21:9 aspect ration where unlike the norm it doesn't expand your field of view horizontally but crops your view vertically to for the 21:9 aspect ratio. So playing overwatch at 21:9 will actually put you at a disadvantage compared to most players. I personally, ended up playing overwatch at 16:9 on my 21:9 monitor with black lines at the horizontal ends. In fact, someone on Reddit ran the numbers (cant find the post right now) and they calculated that your FOV decreases by...

sorry to break it to ya but that's how overwatch does it

if you still wanna go with an ultra wide, that 1070 should be enough to get 60+ at ultra and 3440x1440 resolution

as for a display recommendation i'd say just browse amazon and see what fits in your budget.

that should be it.

hope I helped!

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I am aware of the Overwatch 21:9 but I would play at 16:9 if need be for comps and stuff. But if I wanted to get to 120+FPS would I need a 1080/1080ti?

i imagine it would hover around 120 with a 1070 with a 2560x1080 ultra wide

i notice you said you are looking for a resolution higher than 1080 but there simply aren't any monitors out there that support 3440x1440 at 100+ hz
