Hmmmmmm..... was the core stressed, did all combinations of instructions get executed.... does task manager actually stress the CPU?? mmmm, was any one allowed to even do a system properties to verify that it was actually not a dual core 8 way? It was held under glass, likely all startup services disabled....

The point is, Penryn showed software running -- multiple configurations, and people were allowed to examine the setups.

Barcelona demo wreaks of the LN2 cooled Intel Prescott Demo at the fall IDF (that was just as laughable).

I know, let's have a poll --- how many people think Windows Task Manager is sufficient to test the stability of rig???

You are changing the basis of your original argument.

That is okay... I must have no idea what software is.

An OS IS software. So IS Task Manager. There is NO difference.
No difference between running Task Manager and any other application or service? Wow. :?

What's amazing to me is the conviction with which you state this. It's almost as if ... you wouldn't happen to work in management, would you? Or (shudder) marketing?

-john, the ostensibly clueless redundant legacy dinosaur (but not clueless enough to believe there is no difference)

Just to be clear here... This was Jack's challenge:
Please show me a picture, screenshot, anything of barcelona running anything.....
Barcelona ran Windows and Task Manager. This clearly meets his initial challenge.

Now... How much stressed was placed on Barcelona? That is a completely different argument. In which I completely agree with... Barcelona was not stressed :) .

...Hmm, I side with Jack on this issue. Its like overclocking, booting to Windows is no issue, but unless you can stability run mildly intensive applications, you might as well consider that overclock worthless unless you are shooting for a world record.

Don't put words in my mouth that I did not say!

Placing an adjective in front of the word "software" may change the complexity of the software, but in its lowest common denominator it is still software. You know I right on this.

"Helloworld" is software.

it's actually very healthy.... minus a little extra leakage in first silicon that will be fixed in upcoming steppings, probably why the demo's were only run at 2Ghz...
very impressive so far... (edit: penryn that is - replying to an earlier post by Jack...)

may i ask a question.

Has Intel released or leaked any PENRYN scores?

Is it possible that the early stepping PENRYN only has basic functionality , maybe the brench predictor craps out at 1 ghz and they are trying to IRON IT OUT but at 800 MHZ it works...

Maybe the Penryn dies are failing at a high rate right now....

Could be the same for K8L.... who knows...

To say Penryn is healthier than the K8L right now

I like my job...

and I'd have to say, I've really enjoyed reading all the hypotheticals about both products here.

sorry...
I do have to say I really enjoy Jack's analysis - he's usually spot-on w/ conclusions...

and I have to say I'm impressed as all hell w/ the design engineers that did the Penryn shrink (+ included other features @ same time) - the fact that A0 works so well is absolutely impressive with all the changes made!

There are no delays to 45nm. Everything is moving ahead of schedule.

Please backup that with at least some reasoning if not hard evidence!

He can't he works for Intel, he would get fired.

I trust no one.

When my business partner submits an expense account $5 receipt from Burger King, I go interview the cashiers to make sure they remember him and he didn't dig up the receipt from a trash can.

When my chick goes to the market, I send three undercover PIs to make sure she doesn't get some between the zucchini and the cucumbers.

When my mother makes me lasagna, I first feed a bite to the dog to see if he keels over from arsenic.

But if Jkflipflop98 and/or JumpingJack state something, you can take it to the bank. No questions asked.

Make up your mind... You cannot trust BOTH no one AND Jkflipflop98 and/or JumpingJack. 😀

That is a contradiction.

Ok, Mr. Picker Of Nits, I trust NO ONE except Jkflipflop98, JumpingJack and my cat Kitty. But my cat is dead.

I trusted a chick once. She checked into a hotel for three days with a guy she had just met in a bar. That was the end of me trusting chicks!

I like to think of myself as a pretty good nit picker. 😀

In general, most statements can be interpretted quite differently by someone else... and all because of a simple little word or phrase. Choose your words carefully.

Fantastic! There's this chick I've got the hots for, but her hygiene is less than optimal. If you wouldn't mind doing a nit and crab picking session on her, I'd be really grateful. Right now, I wouldn't touch her with a vibrator at the end of a telephone pole.

does anyone know if these new 45nm processors will still be socket 771 for xeons and 775 for all else?

from the looks of things, it seems as though a current 5000V motherboard @ 1333mhz would be able to handle a xeon penryn processor...

Yum, yum, yum, yum! I want that more than Kelly Brook KrazyGlued to my mattress.

Last I heard Penryns were gonna come in 771 and 775 flavours, but:

Beware The Jubjub Chipset And Shun The Frumious 965...

What you don't trust me? Well you can forget the ES of that non FB-DIMM 771 motherboard I just happened to have laying around.

OK, it's time to rephrase for the third time.

I trust NO ONE except Jkflipflop98, JumpingJack, my dead cat Kitty and ANYONE WHO HAS COMPUTER GOODIES TO GIVE ME, ESPECIALLY MY BEST FRIEND AND OLD BUDDY FROM ALL THOSE TIMES WE USED TO HANG OUT AT THE RODNEY BAY SHOPPING MALL!!!

Paradise is a relative term through out the West Indies nowadays. But anyway, I'm here getting my masters in Engineering and IT before going back home.

As a veteran of

Jamaica
Barbados
Dominica
St. Barts
Trinidad
Bahamas
and
St. Lucia

I know exactly what you mean. I'm referring to the environment, not the tiny minority of nasties who live in that environment and screw it up for everyone else.

So you're goin' back, huh? Well, good on ya! I was supposed to go in on a hotel deal with a bunch of Canucks but it fell through at the last minute. Regretted it ever since. Always dreamed of sittin' on the beach in front of my hotel watching the sun rise (wrong side of the island to watch it set!) 😀
