Pun intended.

Anandtech updated their article, it will cost $740 in 1000 unit quantities.

Thats just what someone who uses their computer for gaming needs, a $740 (American) CPU for gaming.
You could build an entire Nforce2 system with a Radeon 9800Pro for the price of that single CPU.

Like most, my computer is used for my college work, research for the specific area of computers I specialize in, and gaming.

So I pretty much like 90% of people, end up with a game system and a really fast typewriter.

I retract my earlier comment in a post that I would consider this CPU if it has great price/performance because its apparant this is for Intel elitists only.

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Radeon 9800NP, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

I'm yet to own a $740 PC

You mean you've always spent less or more?

What exactly is the difference then, between this CPU (P4 extreme) and the A64-FX, which is about the same price?

If you want the top of the line stuff, you pay for it, right?

If you think about it, anyone who has an 800MHz FSB capable board, can run this thing, with their existing hardware.
The A64-FX needs a new mobo, registered DDR RAM, and the CPU, which can cost upwards over $800USD for the whole setup.

Yeah, it's an elite chip for those who want to pay the money. But so is the A64-FX CPU.

You pay to be "the best".

:)

How many watts does it take to get the center of CPU core?
Edited by nmdante on 09/17/03 10:57 PM.

LOL. Yes, for those who enjoy tinkering with their systems.

But people without the O/Cing skills need to buy the fastest whatever, so they pay up the butt for it. It's been that way for eons, I believe.

Just look at video cards. When the top of the line comes out, people buy them in droves, just to be "King of the Hill", while others wait out the storm for price drops.

I'm gonna have my rain gear ready for this storm.

:)

"plenty", generally I only buy a new puter every couple years so when I buy I generally put 3-5k into the system itself (my puters migrate down to my S.O., Mother, Father, S.O.'s family, my linux boxes, etc.) I generally buy top of the line processor and grafx... During my purchase period I wouldn't hesitate to get this processor and OC it as far as I could on air.

cost $740 in 1000 unit quantities.
That has a quantity discount (the more you buy, the less each cost). What will it cost just to buy one CPU? I'm sure that it'll be much higher than that!

You can only buy them in 1000's though so no the prices are going to be pretty well the same give er take 15% for shipping retailers fees and whatnot.

Currently I'm a govt contractor, pays about 30/hr. Last job was systems admin about 20/hr. I've made down to 10/hr and up to 75/hr. Just depends. I program and admin mainly but in off times i build computers for people for extra money.

LOL

Well alot of us are either high school or college students (like myself).
While we have alot of expendable income, it has to be wisely used as next semester we might not be able to have a job if we have sports or a heavy school load.

Thats why I would never buy yet another overpriced intel product like this one.

I hope when I do start making real money that I retain my frugal mindset.
No one ever got rich by overspending on this kind of crap.

In a couple years I'll pick one up for $30 used in the PC recycle shop. I like collecting antiques.

Why just the other day I saw a MMX 200 with motherboard selling for $14US.

And last year someone gave me a perfectly acceptable 486 that cost them $1400US to put together at one time
