Question Performance gains for 3D work ?

Hello everyone,

I'm a 3D graphic designer, and for a big project, I'm going to redo a 9000m2 supermarket. In this supermarket are all the products and I let you imagine the heaviness of the file, yet sequenced in several (see photo).

My current configuration: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING OC 24G, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, Corsair Vengeance DDR5 128 GB 6000 MHz CL40.

My PC coughs up its lungs to open files, and once they're open I lag horribly, to the point where it's complicated if not impossible to do anything.

For 3D specialists, would you have any suggestions on how to optimize your files for a noticeable overall performance gain?

I've thought of using proxies, but the problem is that I have to make changes to the files, and once they're in the proxy, you can't edit the objects.

I've also thought of cutting the files even more, but in the end I'll still have just as many objects to display.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help,

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

You mentioned that you're a 3D Graphic Designer. We'll need to know the list of app's you're going to tax the system with in order to fulfill your project. I see 3ds Max in the image you've linked above, which version are you working with and where did you source the installer for the app? Have you tried other app's besides 3ds Max?

My current configuration: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 GAMING OC 24G, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, Corsair Vengeance DDR5 128 GB 6000 MHz CL40.
When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

You have to know exactly how much memory was used when you open the files even if you have 128GB RAM

Open task manager and find out how much memory was used.

Maybe you opened too many files at the same time?

Also SSD size and how much free space?

Yes, it's possible, but the problem is that to recreate the whole store, I have to open all the files and glue them back together.

3ds Max is installed on a 1TB SSD and has 320GB of free space left on it.

SSD usage looks OK since you still have plenty free space.

So how much memory did you use while running 3DS MAX? Like the following picture?

If you opened too many files and consume too much memory, Windows are going to swap to the SSD instead keeping all files in the memory and it will slow down the system.

If you really need more than 128GB memory you might have to consider upgrade to 256/512GB workstation instead a desktop PC.

I opened the first file on the list, which is the correct size and memory is not overloaded. The software is quite fluid, no worries.

The problem is that to this file, I have to add the 14 others and the final file exceeds 8GB and is unmanageable.

I don't really think it's a memory problem after all. But maybe I'm wrong.

Like I said, you have to know / show how much memory was consumed/used by the system when you feel the system is lagging/slow.

If memory is really used over 100% then system will start swapping to the disk. The only solution is adding more memory.

I use the ST2000DM008 just for storage

The configuration I have is more than sufficient for what I've had to do so far. Except that for this project, I'm stuck, and only for this project.
What would a “professional” PC be for you?

Professional PC usually a system that's using professional/workstation CPUs that support a lot of memory (>256GB) and a lot of PCIE slots so you can add several high performance plugin cards.

For AMD it will be Threadripper CPU, for Intel it will be Xeon CPU

OK, thanks for your feedback. With my current configuration, which model would you recommend?

So if I understand correctly, the idea would be to start with a processor of this type and add RAM or even a second graphics card?

Adding 2nd graphics card will not solve your problem. Your problem probably is RAM related.

I'll said you better ask the moderator to move the topic to Graphics Cards or Systems subforum or start a new topic there.

You can consider 2nd hand/used system since new system will be pretty expensive,

@Huruk_an

Sort the results shown in Task Manager (Post #7) via Memory % in descending order. Click the Memory column header to change the sort order.

Post accordingly.

= = = =

I am also curious about the current disk configuration.

Open the Disk Management window and expand so all can be fully seen and read.

Take a screenshot and post.

Where and how is the Pagefile configured?

Note: as for moving the topic that can be readily done - however, key is to learn more about the performance problem in question.

Hello,

Here are the requested screenshots.

This weekend I optimized one of the files with XREFs as mentioned and managed to lighten it quite a bit (see photo).
But when I open the lightened file, the viewport still lags. Is this normal?

I wonder if you were to buy a larger capacity, gen 4 drive to run this off of, if that would help alleviate some of the issues you are having. I am assuming that it is some kind of cad file you are working with? Might want to see if there is a healing/repair option for you to run. I know some do have such options, but my cad knowledge is limited to the inspection based software I use.

I'm working on 3dsmax 24. What do you mean by a healing/repair option ?
