Hey guys this is my first post on Tom's Hardware and I had a question about upgrading my 8650 to the athlon II 640. See, I bought the athlon II because at Microcenter they had a deal where if I bought the athlon I would get an MSI 785G-E63 mobo for $10. So I bought it and I was wondering what type of performance increase I will see (if any).

Phenom 8650-3 core @ 2.3 GHz

Athlon II 640-4 Core @ 3.0 GHz

I read that the Athlon doesn't have any L3 cache and I was wondering how that would affect the performance

I'm also gonna have 4gigs DDR3 1333 and I have an HD 4890 Video Card.

I was also wondering about overclocking the Athlon so if anyone could give me a link on how to do that it would be great.

thanks

You would see some significant performance increases with the Athlon II X4 640.
Although Anandtech doesn't have the 640 listed in their benchmarks they do have the faster 645 or the slower 635.You can interpolate the results.
First the Athlon II X4 635 vs Phenom X3 8650

Next the Athlon II X4 645 vs Phenom X3 8650
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/25?vs=188

The Athlon II X4 640 will be between these two.

Now you have a AMD CPU and a 785G motherboard you can go here and download AMD's Overdrive Utility which will let you overclock in a simple way

Otherwise as dogman_1234...
Hmmm...I would guess with the lack of L3 cach, memory would be an issues. Not the RAM, but memory-on-die. I would say OC the AII to about 3.6 GHz...but that kind of help requires you to post into the Overclocking section of the Forum.

Oh, BTW,

Welocme to Tom's Hardware Guide.

Otherwise as dogman_1234 suggested you can go to the right section to overclock
in BIOS the manual way
