Am i reading that post correct an i5 750 is equal to a Q9550 which is equal to a p2 955? from what I have seen the i5 750 gives either of those 2 cpu's a floggin lol

I can understand that, taking advantage of 775 owners who don't want to upgrade their motherboard. Intel is the same as any other corporation, money first.

Edit: also on Newegg, the 9650 includes a free bunny! woohoo!

Phenom II 550 is $110, OCs to around 3.6-3.9, similar clock for clock. Not quite as potent, but enough to remove any bottleneck in a non-well-clock-optimized game. For those, Phenom II 965s and Core i5s are the way to go.

Edit: I meant non-well-threading-optimized.

If you need the performance of multiple GPUs, especially gaming, go i7 on LGA1366 for three features: triple channel RAM, 2xPCIE x16, and hyperthreading. If you don't need that level of performance, particularly in games (i.e. any single video card), look at Q9550 or Phenom II for user-visibly similar performance for a lot less money. And, if you can, wait 2-3 weeks because prices will likely change a lot, for many things. If LGA775 and AMD AM3 CPU prices drop much at all, i5 = FAIL; those who need the performance will get i7 on LGA1366 if they don't want future regrets, and those who don't need that level of performance will get it much cheaper with LGA775 or AM3, leaving i5 with no reason to exist.

Not really, the 550's normally can do 4.3Ghz on Air and 6.3Ghz on Ln2.... The 720's can achieve the same results but it is bit harder due to their stock clock....

Except that it is the best gaming CPU for the money. It can easily handle 2 GPUs, much better than Phenom II or C2Q, and is at a very good price point. It has a great market, the high end. i7 has the elite high end while Phenom II has the low and midrange.

For budget gamers:

Phenom II + single midrange to high end card (4870 or 4890).

For high end gamers:

Core i5 or i7 LGA 1156 + 2 high end cards (2 4890s)

Ultra high end:

Core i7 920 + multi card setups (3 4890s, 2 GTX 295s)

That is how I see the market right now.

The Core i5 build is roughly $200 cheaper, which will perform the same or better than the best AM3 chip.

Well you see it badly. First, I5 is slower or tied with PII so I5 is not high end. I7 920 is also not ultra high end as it is reserved for 975. PII handles CF better than the I7 and saying that I7 scales better than Core2/Phenom II in CF is a lie. And yes, PII + midrange card is for budget conscious gamers, but so is I7 + midrange card. PII indeed has both low and high end, but not enthusiast end options. PII 5xx low end, 7xx & 8xx midrange, 9xx high end. Generally the I7 is a better option than PII at this moment if you do anything except gaming, but the PII also has an edge in encryption, x264 encoding and multiple ATI cards (CF). Core I5 doesn't really make any sense to me. At first I thought they would be releasing something nice for a change and get back to midrange. But it is not all that cheap and will perform much worse than I7. Also, getting the crippled 8xx versions of I7 that are also overpriced is pointless.

I dont think i've ever seen a 550 owner on this site do more then 4Ghz. I have seen multiple people do 4.5+ with an E8500/E8600

Well that is because you don't know anyone that has a 550 over 4Ghz... The only reason Im stuck at 4Ghz is due to my chipset and ram... I have 3 buddies that have their 550's at 4.5Ghz/4.6Ghz and 4.2Ghz on water using DDR3 ram and 790XT's....

Its seems to me no matter what the benchmarks, there are some AMD bare back riders which profusely refuse to recognise that Intels new kid on the block is better than anything AMD has knocked out.

When AMD had the 64 out it beat Prescotts with a long stick, Intel people admitted AMD had a killer cpu especially when it went dual core.

Now AMD followers, lovers what ever need to grow up a bit and reliase that not all is rosey...

Will the I-Core 5 be the last nail in the AMD coffin... I hope not.

Looking forward to a long tradition of i series processors with the core i 7 being top where ever we are for a while when the 6 core comes.

AMD Chips dont seem that cheap any more...

I5 slower then P2? What benchmarks were you looking at? From what i've seen the I5 750 beat down the 965 in almost every test. Anyone going with a 965 over a 750 now is just a fanboi and should be banned from this site.

You're wrong, if you look at the benchmarks just from Toms you'll see that they're actually pretty close. For example at 1680X1050 and 4AA no AF single 4870x2 or single GTX285 (the most common resolution/settings/high end GPU) you'll see very little difference between the i5 750 with turbo boost and a non overclocked PII 965 in any of the games benchmarked. The biggest margin is in a game where the PII 965 is still delivering 111 fps, so the difference is pretty moot. If you can show me a list of benchmarks where the i5 750 "beats down" i'd really like to see a list.

ehm, I'm gonna have to agree with The_Blood_Raven

At normal gaming resolutions and quality options there isn't a dime's worth of difference. Apply the 50-60 buck difference to a better GPU (and that difference is going to grow soon). That's predicated on if gaming is your primary concern. I don't know how this programming you speak of would be affected by the CPU. If its CPU intensive, the i5 750 would most likely be the better choice.

Ah, the same old 'CPU doesn't matter when you're running GPU-limited games' argument.

If you really believe that, why not save some money by buying a dual-core instead?

oh god use the same for AMD and I5
not fare you add for I5 mid tower not full like what you add for AMD and
the mobo for amd you add high end FX why you didn't use GX or X shipsit
the hard drive in amd WD black not like the I5 it is SAMSUNG and
the ram you use for amd OCZ Reaper not like what you use for I5 G.SKILL
over all I5 better
the amd price 1055

IMO both builds will come up to more or less the same price if you use the same components....

The i5 is still a better buy regardless, not that the 965 is inferior in any way... Just a smarter buy....

They should, soon.... But I doubt again that peeps will go with the 965 over the 750 just cause they saved 60 bucks.....As far as the new benchmarks that are running all over the net, it will be hard for AMD to convince the public that the 965 is a better buy overall compared to the 750....
