Phenom 955 BE or Core i5 750

To paraphrase, why did you choose RAM in your i5 setup that is twenty dollars more expensive with identical specs?
And HDD that is $20 more?
A Case that is regularly $50, etc.

Not to mention that your motherboard is exorbitant compared to the i5s, the inevitable price cuts over the next couple weeks... bottom line is, AMD is more of an option than you make them out to be, and prices will be slashed.

AMD may well end up practically giving away their CPUs, because their bread and butter has become ATI.
BTW, I'm not saying that i5 is slow, or that PII is faster. And yes, for the same money, it IS a question of where you put it, CPU or GPU. Where the game (or ANY) application is CPU-limited, then you'll want i7 (i5 looks like an ok choice, but shortly you'll kick yourself for not getting i7); in anything else, you'd be better off improving your GPU(s). That is what keeps PII a better choice.

Edit: ...but not the 965. OC a cheaper 955 (or even 945) to the same level.

Why xfire 5850's when you can have a nice 750 paired with a 5870x2?? 3200 SP's will be MORE than enough and IMO it is overkill in some instances....

5850's sound sweet but I guess you will have to get a 920 for full x16

Well if you use a tad of common sense that extra 100.00 will give you more than a 30% gain in performance alone.... I would go with the 5850's if they were around the 199.99 mark but not 299.99 a pop.... that's crazy....

Is amd going to drop the price of the 965? I sure hope in the 150 dollar range.

Not happening, no reason because it is faster than the I5 as much it is more expensive, and AMD officially stated that they won't be lowering their price and that their products are superior.

Anyone going with a 965 over a 750 now is just a fanboi and should be banned from this site.

Haha, nice one. But really, no harsh feelings or anything, I would still pick 965 over I5 if I was choosing a new platform any day. Over the I7 though, it would be a HELL OF A LOT tougher to chose AMD if I had money. Then only super AMD fanboys would chose a Phenom II.

PEACE

PS: Meaning 950 or 975 I7, I already picked 955 over 920 even though I had the budget.

In the graphics forum they have a 5870 tested on the crysis benchmark and it's beating down the GTX295 :ouch:

Then that normally means that a single 5870 should be more than enough for anyones needs unless they are trying to get 1000FPS with xAA maxed out....

The 295 is OLD.... you cannot compare the 925 with a next gen card.... Once the 300 series drops then you can compare apples to apples......

Well, at first, AMD's latest Phenom II's are faster than the overpriced Core2 extremes at the quarter of the price. Then, AMD competes well with I7 920 at some points due to it's higher frequency, and at a lower cost. It is also nearly the same league as I5 750, a few variations and wins and losses by most benchmarks. But what is strange to me is that, for example, AnandTech, posted that PII 965 is the fastest processor (even faster than the extreme 965) in Fallout3 a month or two ago before the new I7's and I5's were released. Now, the new I7's hold the crown, and tha tis ok, but explain how is suddenly PII lower than both 965 and 920 plus the I5? Something is fishy in all new reviews and I'd say Intel was being busy bribing 😀 Loool, but seriously.

It's going to get even worse for amd

Wait for the Bulldozer and be ready to get crushed under it's mighty threads 😉

I wouldn t say AMD is garbage.... Just not up to par....

You want to know something interesting? The other day I was messing around with 3dmark06 and to my surprise I saw that the i7 920/GTX 295 scored 17k.... So I decided to test my system and compare..... I used my 550 as a dual core @ 3.856Ghz/GTX 260 and got 16,555.... Regardless of my overclock the 920 was benched using a 295... That says alot for a cheap 99.99$ CPU....Who knows what I would have scored using a 955.....

I don't understand this argument... It is clear that the reason why the 750 is faster/superior is due to its "Turbo" .... turn it off and the 965 will surpass the 750, turn it on and the 965 trails.... Capiche?

Peace, this is going nowhere. And I would gladly test 3DMark on my 955 and will soon if I get it to see what would I get, but I think it is dual threaded so it would be the same and that that is the reason for similar scores, as 550 has a higher frequency. And yes, AMD isn't on par currently, if they were, they would also have 1000K CPUs like in the FX era. But in mainstream and high end they are still great choices.

Holly molly you certainly need a hell of a cooler to bring this heat hog of a Phenom II to that frequency at 1.45!!! Mine IDLES at 58 degrees at that voltage and frequency.

Clock for clock the amd will lose. Why turn turbo off?

The reason I stated "turn it off" is basically to show that you are comparing a 2.66Ghz CPU to a 3.4Ghz CPU... Once the turbo is enabled you basically arent runing at 2.66Ghz anymore so it levels it out....

Um... Old? What the hell are you upgrading to? A NASA CPU? 😀 I see the point of going from early Core2 and Phenom or earlier to 975 extreme or something better, but over 920 it is stupid. What do you have now? And look what beats you... A measly 940 plus an inferior card... 😀

So I'd say PII 940 is faster architecture in 3D (no kidding) because your CPU was clocked 2GHz lower (not two times lower) and the score was two times worse 😉

Same reason people compare the PII 955/965 cpu to the I5/I7's. Nothing better to compare it to at the moment... stupid reason imo. Even when AMD stated the 955/965 was to compete with the C2Q q9550/q9650 CPUs. ePeen strokage for the fanboys.
