Owch man, that sucks.

You should have soldered a wire to the underside of the mobo where the standoffs go, then connected the other end of the wire to a grounded spot.
that didnt work either. Im not sure exactly how to ground it well this time. Ive tried many ways including yours. I think Im going to build in a ground fault isolator into the works this time. Quite possibly even a massive UPS. :sol:

well that just happened all at once! I had a real baddddddd surge and it killed it all.

EDIT: I grabbed th TV tuner and removed it from one of the boards. When I pulled it resisted, I pulled harder, it gave way and my hand touched the exposed inverter board from the monitor under the glass. I had one hand on the card and one grabbing the frame of the desk. Poof! There went my massive build...... Like I said Im not too sure about this exposed hardware. I will deffinitely move the inverter board somewhere else that cant be touched easily. AND be damn sure not to work on it with any power on, ANYWHERE! I have since RMA'd 4 of the boards and used them in other projects

Surge protectors DO NOT WORK for long if at all!!!!! This build had several surge protectors. If the surge protector works it only does for power coming through the strip not for a surge that came from the above mentioned problem. I not sure anything could have or would have protected it from that. A line conditioner/UPS is the only thing that will actually protect an electronic component from a large surge. Once again though the surge must be coming from the wall outlet. I run into people all the time that have been wiped out by surges and their defense always is ...... "Well I had a surge protector on it! My answer is always the same "Surge protectors DONT work, Im sorry. You must use a line conditioner!"

Edit: The bad thing is I didnt take my own advice. :non:

Should I just go ahead and order a good air cooler now? CPU paperwork says any cooler other than the factory cooler will negate the warranty.

nothing will happen to the CPU as long as you monitor the temps, don't go over 1.5v and you will be fine...

get a cooler...

enjoy your CPU 😉

Na man, its a non-reference... i got it for free anyway. XD I have a feeling it has air bubbles in it and that is what is causing the rattling. I think i will have to take it apart, then add a res into the loop. That way i can get rid of the air.

BTW man, do you post anywhere else?

XS, OCN, EOCF , techreaction, etc?

where do you post?

PM me 😉

Wow I wish I was here earlier to be in the middle of this great conversation...
Wow xtc I really feel for you dude...I feel so bad when I fry something...that must have been devastating...

devasATING ........ yes! Not all was rma-able some was but I used them in other builds. I plan on using 4 of the new DFI 1156 mini-itx boards next time with i7 840's. It should kick the sh*t out of the AMD boards. Along with the two tower screwed to the side of each desk (one with a 965be on a crosshair-HD4870x2/GTX295 the other with a Q9650-p45-HD5970/GTX295) I think It should blow fire out its arse when it s done.

Videl,
Thanks for the post. TOO EASY! 10 days into my first build and I've already learned a boatload from these awesome forums.
Got my 550 opened to an x4 B50 also. Checked device manager, and they all 4 show. Even switched back and forth using only the EC setting in bios. I currently have bios power settings on auto. Will run an OC with easy tune when I receive my new cooler (Coolermaster Hyper N520) $40. Typically drops temp. 20 C on loads. Has copper heat tubes and dual fans, so should also keep the whole case cooler.
Will post my results when I'm done playing.

Had to try it now, couldn't wait for the cooler. Ran easytune6 to get a basic limit. It upped the multiplier from 15.5 to 16.5, I stepped it up to 17.5
and changed fsb from 200 to 233. That was too much. Reset bios, left ratio at 17.5, returned all else to auto.
2x 550=3.11ghz 4x B50=3.52ghz :) OCd gpu650-740 mem clock 400-510.
I'll try to leave it as is until my cooler (insurance) is installed. Temps are only up by 3-4c-(8f). Gpu's a little warmer, but ok. Spun my front fan around to give the boards a good blast. Then I'll do a step by step fine tune.

Jeeze xtc, you have some killer hardware man.

I get more daily. Speeking of hardware I have a laptop up for sale any biters! Acer 5100 upgraded to win7 2gb 800 ram 160gb HDD upgraded proc from single core AMD Turion mk36 to Turion TL58 x2. Grand total of $200.00.

Well its just a toy Im on now. I Carry a 17" Mac, this Acer Aspire 5100 and an Aspire netbook in my laptop bag at all times. I feel my bag is too heavy so I guess I really dont need this 5100. I only use it when I have the Mac tied up or someone else needs one. . Other than that its the netbook for surfing. I get tired of carrying so much hardware. Anyway I was just offering to one of you guys Ill probably put it on Ebay for more.

yeah i know but hey I want to get rid of it. Otherwise Ill probably get a crooked back from carrying it around. I work at a PC store Icould sell it there but the Boss want 50%............... Hmmmmmm ......... 50%.......... 11% ........... Ill take the later!

So it's been a while since I used an AMD processor and this whole unlock the x2 to an x4 sounds wonderful. is there a list of boards this works on? Thanks

Any 770/710 or 790/750 motherboards. I would suggest using one that has been able to unlock in the above posts. Not all AMD 550/555 dual cores will unlock but most will.

Acer Laptop sold today for $450............... just thought I would let you guys know!
