I just got a Plex 161040 retail. EZ Creator and DirectCD with upgrades from Wed work. Plex Mgr 2000 loads OK but does nothing when I double click on icon. When its loaded it hangs my PC on shut down and PC is slow. Got upgrade 1.09 from Plex, same problem. Help

P111450
2 Maxtor 20g
Voodoo 3 3000
256 RAM
Win98SE

Help.

Removed all cdr software, rebooted and updated aspi, then added back Adaptec and DirectCD per Customer Service at Plextor.

Everything works now.

I have the exact same problem.

Plextor 16/10/40A ATAPI
Asus P5A motherboard W/ K6-450
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
SBlive!
192 meg of 100Mhz SDRAM
Win98SE

As long as I only install Adaptec Create CD, I am OK and can do all I need.

But if I install Plextor Manager 2000 version 1.09 that came with the drive, I am totaly screwed and have to reinstall my OS to recover from the system hanging. The uninstall won't even work!

As long as I avoid Manager 2000, I am OK and everything works GREAT! Awesome drive! Sucky Manager 2000 software!

P.S. I have downloaded the ASPI (Advanced SCSI Programming Interface) checker and driver from Adaptec and checked my system. It found a ton of problems but I am not sure I want to update it yet (since I have a ATAPI driver, not SCSI. A little confusing. Perhaps it doesn't matter??). I am waiting for Plextor tech-support to get back to me first.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Click here to go to the answer to your question.

Or to save some time click here to download the aspi file layer checker, to check on how old your aspi layer is and if it has all it's files (mine, strait out of Win98se, were horribly out of date and missing vital files, and the ones I did have were of different and conflicting versions. I assume that this would be the case for anyone who has not used the below programs to update the aspi in win98se). Then click here and install the file aspi32.exe, or if that progam fails to install correctly click here, to download "aspiinst", install it, and then try installing "aspi32" again. This should fix everything.

Thanks for the post and links, earlier I tried the aspi.exe and it didn't install so I will try the last link you had and see if that helps. Thanks again, it worked for you?

OK! Everything is working great!

I uninstalled all the software that came with the Plextor drive, rebooted and installed the "aspiinst.exe" file then rebooted then tried to install the "aspi32.exe" again (this time it worked), then rebooted again and installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator -reboot- install Adaptec DirectCD -reboot- install Plextor Manager 2000 -reboot- and everything now works like a dream!

The Plextor tech support guy told me that "ASPI is a general purpose programming interface for all kinds of storage devices" not just SCSI devices. So that gave me the courage to try doing this. And it worked!

Now if the Plextor website would just explain all this before hand, or better yet, make their install check all this and update it automatically! To have an bug issue this bad (nukes your system if you don't have the current ASPI) and not do something to fix it is inexcusable! But at least they give you the right answer if you send their tech support an email about it.
