OK, I`m just curious how you can get 17X when every dvd burner and dvd-rom drive that I have seen has a max read speed of 16X for dvd-rom content.

Ok so now this dang drive will read DVD's and play them but still will not burn anything. I am using staples Cd's and DVD's are these drives that touchy to where I have to use top of the line discs?

LOL! Dang it. Not what I wanted to hear. So I just eat the 100+ dollars on this dual layer piece of crap....Bummer!

I suppose Plextors actually can reach 17x on DVD-ripping. At least there was a feature in DVD-Decrypter that removed the speed cap which said "plextor only". And I think I saw it in Plextools manual too - you can bypass the 16x limitation at the expense of noise/vibration and a possibility of media itself breaking to pieces. :)).

Firmware updates didn't work for me by the way

agreed. it would not be scientific to give up on Plextor because of one bad experience. But what made it feel so bad, was the fact the people bought the most expensive drive in their lineup, only to have their hopes ruined.
I was lured by the 8mb buffer, the plextools features, and the glass lens, and thinking to myself "this fella is gonna serve me a loooong time" before I upgrade to smth. else".

Thats kind of the opposite of me, the 716SA I have is over a year old and still works fine, but sofar I have been through 3 Plextor 760A dvd burners all had problems and I am still waiting for another replacement 760A from Plextor. In my opinion without the PlexTools software they are just another $30.00-$40.00 dvd burner, I have other dvd burners that I paid less then half of what the Plextor costs and get just as good or better burns and quality scores with. I also remeber that one of their older models turned out to be a rebadged Teac drive, not exactly a bright shining moment for Plextor, that model didnt last long. The problems I have experienced with the 760A are pretty much the same as some others have experienced with the 755A model from what I have read online.

what about a warranty???

you spent a 100 on a dvd burner with no warranty? Whats the deal yo? No return policy?

I have 2 Plextor 716A's in my system. Greatest drives I've ever had to deal with.

Yes they have a warranty. My 716SA has never given me any trouble, I have experienced ongoing problems with three different Plextor 760A drives, just got the fourth RMA warranty replacement from Plextor delivered today. Sofar with the ongoing DVD+RW media problems I have experienced with three different 760A drives it is by far the worst and most unreliable drive I have ever had to deal with. I have about ten other $30.00-$40.00 dvd burners that are far more reliable with DVD+RW media then the 760A is.

I too had a Plextor 716SA It did pretty much the same thing. I contacted Plextor, they ran me through some things to diagnose the problem, then they said it would have to be RMA'd (It was still under warranty). I sent it out and 4 business days later I recieved a PX 755 SA. With the new drive I hav burned around 80 to 100 DVD's and have not had a problem since. Maybe it was just a crappy model. My Plextor cd burner I got in 2001 has been installed into 3 different computer and has burned countless cd's is still working now in a system I gave away to a family member. I personally have no problems with plextor. I have installed Plextor drives into many systems over the past 7 years with no problems, except the one that got damaged in shipping, and this thing looked like a heavy pallet was dropped on it. Had to refuse delivery on that one.
