Win XP Pro - new computer build and when I fit in a PCI internal modem the
computer will not boot! Everything else is working and will boot normally.
What has gone "wrong"? I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this
problem.
Thanks

Is it a current modem that is XP compatible? Will it boot
to safe mode with the modem installed?

Is the PCI card defective?

Only you know if the card is inserted correctly. Only you know if you
installed a card with the correct bus architecture (not forcing an ISA card
into a PCI slot). Only you know if you heard a "crack" when you pressed the
card in too hard (and damaged the M/B or the bus slot). And only you know if
another modem that is correct for the bus architecture of the computer you
built will work without problems.

Really, it has been many years since I have seen modem problems that were
not caused by the computer builder/owner/fixer! Virtually all of them were
self induced.

ouch, Crusty! 🙂 It is a PCI card, no "crack" when inserted. It maybe an
incompatible XP card? I will try another known working modem from another XP
computer to see if it recognises the modem. I went into the BIOS and checked
the plug and play settings and all they showed was that the IRQ's are all
set at Auto. On board video, so I am not seating it next to the video card.

Any further nice 🙂 comments appreciated.
Tks

They all "were" nice comments. You should see me when I get on a roll. I was
trying to impress upon you that you didn't give us anything to work with.
Like you were keeping the necessary information a big secret. I plug it in
and it don't work "isn't very informative"!

Are you sure you don't have an on-board modem that has to be turned off
before you can insert another modem card? You didn't tell us that either,
but I have seen it numerous times. The interaction can cause all sorts of
problems.

Tell us everything. Need specs about M/B, modem card, other peripherals
attached. Did you try with everything taken out EXCEPT for the mode? Did you
try various slots?

Got the idea?

Thanks Jim
But the operating system DOES NOT boot at all when the modem is inserted!
Otherwise the system works perfectly without the modem.

Point taken Crusty 🙂 Borrowed another working modem from a friend's Win
XP computer and this was immediately recognised. Guess that the one I was
trying to install was incompatible. Yes, I did try other PCI slots and there
was no onboard modem to turn off. Nor was there a video card to NOT put the
modem next to. IRQ's were also set to Auto. Here endeth my odyssey.
