Portable Hard Drive, slow read/write speed after format

Hi

I'm new to the the forum so hello all..

I have a Imation Apollo 2.5" Portable HDD (250GB), which has run great for about 2 years now. It was always formatted as Fat32 as was used on both Mac and PC. Recently i have dumped the Mac on the misses and so decided to format the HDD to NTFS (before i did this i formated it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to reinstall OS X to the mac.

Now i have a NTFS formatted HDD that runs extremely slowly, taking about 7min to write a GB, even on my USB 3.0 it is only reaching speeds of Avg. 18mb/s

I have tried it on Windows XP & 7, Linux and OS X on 3 different machines, so it defiantly the HDD

Have i killed my poor old HDD with over formatting or have i merely injured it?

Hi! I would like to ask you questions if I may?
Which system you really would like to have the drive on exactly?
If it is on Windows: you can 1st, run a check disk on it by just right click on the "Imation Apollo 2.5" Portable drive" on (My) computer and go to Properties. Then, select the "Tools" tab and click on "Check now"

Or back up your info off the drive, delete the partition, and create a new one under "disk management"
Disk management can be found by right clicking on (My) computer and then select "Manage"

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried both.. sorry i should have said the disk is blank, i have reformatted it twice now as NTFS to see if it would speed it up. I have also ran check disk, as well as the OS X and Linux equivalent.

A few other things i have tried...

- Enabling Write caching under polices tab (device manager)
- Ensuring HDD is connecting as USB Enhanced device (2.0 & 3.0) and not open (1.1)
- Throw it at a wall

Turned out the partition map was set to GUID, and not MBR

Who'd have known?!
