Power supply advice needed.

I need some advice on what I should look for in a power supply. I am going to order a Lian-Li PC60 case. It will have an Athlon XP 1900+ on an Asus A7V333 board. I plan on overclocking, too. I guess what I'm getting at is, anyone have any recommendations for a stable power supply that doesn't get too hot or too loud? Also, what would be the minimum wattage I should get?

I would recommend the most powerful PSU that your budget can afford, especially when overclocking, in either the Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, or Antec True Power lines.

Standard <i>minimum</i> power supply specs with an Athlon processor and a GeForce video card:

20Amps for the +3.3v line
30Amps for the +5v line
165W for the combined +3.3v/+5v power

300W minimum for the total available power, with more being a better solution. A larger PSU allows added redundancy, and runs cooler. In addition, most of the more powerful units have dual fans to help remove heat from the system.

The wattage of a PSU is not nearly as important as the amperage that can be furnished on the individual rails, as well as the overall efficiency level of the unit.

Don't skimp on the power plant for your computer. An overloaded PSU can cause a multitude of problems, some of which are difficult to diagnose, such as data loss and/or corruption.

Comment:

The "Whisper" series from Enermax is excellent for providing clean power, and these PSU's are anything but loud.

On a personal note, I regularly install the Enermax EG651P-VE FMA 550W series in all the systems that I build. I find them to be nice balance of power, cooling, and the noise level is rarely an issue, since the 80cm fan can be manually adjusted by the user. The PSU has a temp feedback circuit on the 8cm fan to avoid overheating under improper rpm settings, and the 92cm fan is thermally controlled. It's not the cheapest PSU on the market, but that's entirely beside the point, IMHO.

Yeah, the Enermax 500w+ psu's are good. At $160+, they better be.

I like the Leadman "Powmax" 500w supplies, personally. They are "louder" than the Enermax's, but have and intake/exhaust fan, and run about $60. They always need tweaking too; their QA is poor-white-trash...
