My old power supply was going out so i bought a new evga power supply. After installing into my pc my towers fans as well as my 3 hard drives all stopped working. The bios recognizes my disk drive that’s on a different power strip than all 3 of the hard drives.

is it possible that my new power supply short circuited my 3 hard drives that we’re on the same sata power cable? And if so how can I recover the data on them cause I have information for school and work that I need

Different power strip?

Before assuming things are dead, double check everything. Power and data cables. And you're sure it's plugged into the PSU in the right spot? I'm assuming you have a modular PSU and something isn't fully plugged in all the way.

Were the psu’s modular and if yes did you reuse the Sata power cables?

Your best option is to take the drives out and connect them to another desktop/laptop. However if there was a power issue the drives could be damaged. If they are then only a professional data recovery company ‘might’ be able to save some/all of the data, but this option is very expensive.

I’ve checked multiple times and they are all plugged into the right spots and by different power strip I meant the 3 hard drives (2 hard drives 1 ssd) are all connected to the same sata power cord from the psu to the drives and I have a disk drive that is being read in the bios on its on power strip from the psu.

What was the old PSU?

What is the new PSU?

Were they modular power supplies?

Did you reuse any cables from the old power supply on the new one?

i was borrowing a psu from a friend in the meantime waiting for this one to come in and reused those wires but the wires I used from my friend were brand new (I took them out of the bags) and when I saw it wasn’t working I tried the brand new wires from the new psu that came in. The psu I believe is fine however I believe it ruined my hard drives.

the one I borrowed was not old just not the one my friend wanted so he let me borrow it. He never had problems before and I didn’t have problems with it when using it.

the old one I borrowed was a Corsair 750m and the new one I got was a EVGA 750 so it’s the same power but different companies

Only use the new cables that came with the new psu. DO NOT USE THE OLD CABLES. Has nothing to do with age, has everything to do with how the cables hook up to the psu ports. Psu side cables are proprietary, to be used only with the psu cables. It's the other end, the part that plugs into the gpu that is universal.

Imagine the old psu has a 6pin on the psu itself. The top 3 pins are hot, the bottom are ground. With the new psu, has the same 6pin, but the top 3 are ground and the bottom 3 are hot. At the other end, where the wires plug into the hdd's, that means every pin that's supposed to be power is a ground, and every pin that's supposed to be ground is a hot.

So use the correct power cables that came with the new psu, not the old power cables, and pray there's no permanent damage. If there is, unless you know someone who can physically swap the controller board inside the hdd, they are toast.

Tried using the new cables that came with the new power supply and still nothing. So they’re most likely gone? And if so is data recover a possibility?
