Power switched off -> CMOS checksum error with Abit KW7

When I take the power cord off the computer power supply (when taking
the computer to lanparties) and later plug it back, when booting I get
this "CMOS checksum error. Defaults loaded." I have fine-tuned every
setting and that's really annoying to do it again. It seems that the
settings are still in the bios when booting (for example the keyboard
wake-up works) but right after that I get this checksum error. Why?

Too bad that check cannot be turned off as the settings in bios really
seem to be right.

I have done Googling, asked local nerds, tried newer bioses with no help.

sounds like a bad battery or that the CMOS clear jumper is not on the
correct pins (1 & 2, not just a single pin...)

Have you tried a new battery?
