Printer Install Problems

I am having trouble with the printer connected directly
to my PC via the parallel port.

I have an HP PSC 500, which dissapears from the installed
printer list. When ever I try to add a new printer I get
the following error message "Operation could not be
completed"

I can find no help in the Help files or anywhere else,
this happened previously and the only way I could sort it
out was to install from scratch, which as I don't have
HDD problems at the moment I'm not willing to do.

I'm using WIndows XP (Home Edition) which is fully
updated and patched via the Microsoft Updates page, does
anyone have any ideas on this one?

It hasn't disappeared, it's still there but your Print Spooler has stopped.

From the Command Prompt, type:

net start spooler
(and hit enter) and it should reappear.

My print spooler always stops. I set it for auto mode but
everytime I boot I have to manually start the print
spooler. Is there something else going on?

Is this an All in One printer.... they have other services that the Print
Spooler is dependant on and if the services stop, so does the Print Spooler.
The complete solution would be to COMPLETELY start again with the printer as
per Bruce Sanderson's instructions at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

(Pay particular attention to sections 14 through 16 and disconnect the
printer before cleanup).

Cari,

The printer is a HP deskjet 670C. Also I don't believe
that my printer driver is the issue. When I built the
system I installed everything in a very meticulous order.
First the motherboard, processor, Ram, Hard drive, Disk
drives, keyboard and mouse and the video card were
installed. Then XP was installed and rebooted, then after
the install the sound card was installed, then the printer
was attached at which time the install wizard started and
failed to load due to the rpc (print spooler) failing to
start. After everything was installed and attached all the
drivers (video card, sound card and printer) were updated
from the manufacture site. I have not checked the link you
mentioned however I will try the COMPLETE clean up as long
as it does NOT require reinstalling XP.I have done this 4
times trying to get the spooler to work properly and
frankly I'm tired of doing so. Thanks.
