Problems with XMAME, MAMEd, and advanceMenu

Okay, these are actually two separate issues, so I'll address them in two
parts. For reference, I'm using the most up to date versions of all the
software, for AdvanceMAME and XMAME they're version 0.92.1, for
AdvanceMENU it's 2.4.6. If I'm being obtuse, just ask me and I'll attempt
to explain any part of the situation better.

(1) I'm having trouble getting XMAME to identify my USB -> PSX pads. My
other emulators and games will recognize them without an issue, but the
binaries I've downloaded don't identify the pads. I've read the
documentation and have tried to edit the makefile to allow me to use the
pads (I've read threads that say to compile for SDL, but this wasn't a
solution for me). I've run xlistdev, and it doesn't list my pads at all.

(2( What WILL work is AdvanceMAME. It detected my pads and allows me to
use them, but I can't get AdvanceMENU to work properly. I followed the
instructions and set up the emulator section of the rc file exactly like
the documentation says with no luck. It will start up, but if I choose a
game, it locks up and never calls the emulator.

(3) Frustrated with all of that, I decided to see if I could get any front
ends to work. Stuff like KMamulator works okay, but it's not exactly user
friendly. GXMAME works, but it tries to throw wierd joytypes into the
mix. Ironically, gxMAME identifies my pad and allows me to navigate the
menus with it. I tried MAMEd, whcih looks really snazzy, but for some
reason, MAMEd isn't reading the games list from the generated XML file
properly, which is strange since AdvanceMENU generates files from both
XMAME and AdvanceMAME and reads it without a hitch. Have they changed the
way the file is generated recently?

Thanks,

GregoryD

Having a similar problem. I have a Mayflash Super Dualbox and I can't get
it working under Linux, works fine under windows though.

Cant remember how long ago, but MAME switched to a XML format.
