Agreed with above
The reason people choose consoles over PC's really comes down to issues such as convenience. Buying a Playstation or Xbox pretty much guarantees you high level games out of the box for the next 5-7 years. No need for continual upgrading, patching or tinkering. The ridiculous disparity between ranges of specs from old low end PC's to new maxed out systems is vast, It makes it very hard to develop for EVERYBODY or easy to be lazy and only target the people who have top end systems (Bad for developers because this is a small marketplace which = lower profits = more closed studios)
Often the results you see from 360 or PS3 games are pretty stunning considering what developers have to work with. Sometimes the old theory of giving people limits makes them work a little harder, to push the boundaries rather than just getting lazy.
I am sure the next gen wave of consoles will be great and as developers explore the possibilities of the console into the later parts of its lifespan the visuals will be stunning.

Sony and Microsoft should not be so hasty going with AMD just check out Haswell the new cpu after ivy bridge this would make a much better console cpu due to (TSX) Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX), a new set of instructions designed to improve multi-core efficiency.
And the video will blow away anything AMD has on a chip and Haswell uses 20x less energy and from reports much less heat it will be a big leap in performance than anything out atm.

Graphics alone don't make a console.Just look at the Wii, it sold more than ps3 and the 360.Wii's graphics is almost last gen.

A large part of the Wii's success was due to entry cost. This needs to be high on Sony/MS lists.
Console designs are primarily based on what the consumer wants, market trends and financial pressures.
One of the first things I look at is the display the consoles will connected to and even the most generous respectable forecasts for 3D TV penetration in the U.S. alone is less than 3% in 2015. This tells me that besides the fact that there still is no universal 3D TV standard, that the initial target format will have to be HDTV with Virtual 3D enabled through kinect-like head tracking. Once a 3D standard is ironed out it can be tacked on.

[citation][nom]asalikus[/nom]Guys please reply. If PlayStation makes APU and GPU work together will it be faster than Xbox 720?[/citation]

Contrary to what some "boneheads" (ie poster "f-14" above) think, the gpu on the APU can be either synchronous or not depending on Sonys' desires. These chips will almost certainly be custom derivatives of products in AMDs' portfolio. That said, if current rumors are close to being true, then both consoles will be close in raw performance.

They should make a basic operating system for PC just like consoles so people can run advanced games on mid-low range PC's and use Windows (X) as their 1st operation system. That way we can save hundreds of dollars.

Game studios can concentrate on game play factor rather than just graphics. A lot of recent games are just about graphics, but boring to play.

[citation][nom]dash2201[/nom]What the hell, AMD Trinity is nearly going to be released and they're using Llano....maybe a marketing startegy who knows?[/citation]
It can be a Trinity.
Or it can be Llano with 28nm process. It's a customized chip after all.

Look at these nerds drooling over this stuff it's just a piece of metal.

The only reason they can use low end chips is because consoles are optimized for gaming-a PC will run a lot more stuff, but to get the same type of performance in gaming cost twice as much

The reason for such low specs is so they will make a profit on the hardware. Then a year later they will release another new system with an upgraded gpu/cpu because of things like tessellation they will be able to advertise things like play your existing games with better graphics and games companies will be able to release high resolution texture packs as dlc to increase their profits. using an x86 cpu makes this easy as this practice has been done for years on pcs and eventually of course they will stop supporting the first system forcing people to upgrade to a newer one.

Developers will loves this as they will only need to make one game with scalable graphics 1 level for consoles then another for pcs then a year later the new console will be able to run it on pc settings hugely reducing the costs of making a game while increasing the profits and of course screwing their customers.

Infinity is a good name for the new xbox in this case as they will infinitely milk money out of people with minor upgrades.

As far as selling points, on a single console you can entertain 4 people. On PC, you typically need 1 PC per person, and try to fit all of that in a typical living room / apartment / dorm.

It sounds like it'll be easier to develop a PC game, and port it to consoles. There's some really great games I've missed out on due to hardware exclusivity so I hope that option becomes less popular, in favor of making more money, making the game available to all markets.

As far as console hardware choices, all they really need to do is hit native 1080p, and its next-gen as far as consoles go. 1080p + anti-aliasing would be nice but not really necessary or realistic for an inexpensive console.

I probably won't buy any new consoles, unless its for my 7 yr old daughter, who'll likely be 8 by the time anything hits the market.

Consoles do provide most gaming power for cost when they are released ( Special deals, bulk, manufactoring exclusively offshores, ect. )

I won't be switching to console anytime soon hehe.

Well, the PS3 was prohibitively expensive at first, mostly because of blu-ray and whatnot. It wasn't until later when the prices dropped that they really started selling those things. Sony has already stated that they want something more affordable at launch, so this makes sense.

It really would be nice to see something along the lines of an HD7850 or better as the main GPU unit. I've always been a console gamer and I've owned most of them at one time or another. But I must admit, I spend most of my gaming time on my PC nowadays. My PS3 is used as a general entertainment device for movies and Netflix mostly. Its in my bedroom, and I don't spend much time gaming in there.

I hardly have time for gaming much anyway.

For those of you who are retarded or don't understand anything about processor infrastructure, this is good news. The performance of a console does not have a linear relationship with PC's. Using these apu's will allow the manufacturers to create high end high performance gaming consoles at a lower cost. Single threaded applications are dead, thus using an intel isn't desired. These APU's are designed to handle graphics performance. You can't gauge their performance based on a windows pc, it isn't the same. Look at previous gen consoles, they have CRAP hardware in them compared to todays standards, yet for the past 5+ years, they have performed well. Calm down, this is a good move.

guys come on be real

how do you expect them to make a 300-400$ console with high end components or even mid range by today standards?

they CAN make a 1000$ worth Console but who will buy those ?

and how about international customers like China , East Asia , East Europe and so on ... those are Billions people and is already hard for them to pay 300$ for their kids consoles.

you want high end? get a PC.

I like the consoles btw ... they are affordable . and fun.

and example of high end console would be the Asrock Vision X series

it packs i7/i5 CPU , 7870M MXM card and is inside 20x20x4 small case

but for how much? 900$

http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series/

this is your next Xbox 720 and PS4 ... if sold without profit would be around 400$

and the 7870M = 7770 destkto VGA card.

want 680m? lol that would be like 1500$ console.

Playing video games is a privilege, not a God given right rofl

Look on the bright side, at least console ports wont run so poorly and developers could easily port their games to Linux for the PC . Cant wait to game natively on Linux !

"Last I checked the HD4870 outperforms the HD6670 in practically every benchmark out there"

OH NO, it gets worse. Are you serious, the next gen 2013 console hardware wont even match my dusty dirty old defunct 4870 card sitting in my OLD PC under the bed! This is a disaster!

I imagined they would actually build a console that is slightly ahead of the production GPUs available at the time of release. This is how they used to do it. Im not saying they should have $500 pc GPUs, i'd expect them to have a custom gpu for the console price range using the absolute latest gpu technology. Not an already outdated architecture.

Guys I might be wrong here but I am pretty sure you should not be this worried. Yes the hardware may seem to be on the weak side but you have to remember that when placed in the console the manufacturer can squeeze out a whole lot more performance from the chips because It Is a closed system. Therefore we should see higher frame rates than that of a pc with identical specs. The ps4 plans to go the 4k route and if they do they must have something up there sleeve!

Well since they are tinkering with sli/crossfire setups, why not just make a console with a upgrade slot???Sell the base model for your average people, and a slide in adapter for better play? Limits limits.

If this is true, i would mean that we are already at the top of what game devs are going to be pushing on in terms of visuals.
If so, there is a chance i wont be buying any game that is not great based of the gameplay and story, where is a point where most big companies seem to have big problems.
