Hi,

im new here on tom's Hardware. I've come here to ask about a problem I have currently on my pc system. I built my rig using:

Intel i5-12600K
RTX 3070 Gigabyte Gaming OC
16Gb Kingston Fury 3200mhz
Gigabyte Z690 Gaming
PSU: MSI MPG A850GF

and ever since I built it I've had an issue with the noise. I have an open mesh case that let's out sound pretty easily, but I tested where the sound was mostly coming, and it was the PSU, otherwise the system was pretty quiet. All the parts are brand new, and now I'm wondering that should I RMA the PSU or what?

I can send a link with the noise if needed.

Solution
if it's loud enough to be noticeable in a recording go ahead and upload a sample.

try stopping the power supply fan while the sound is audible and see if it stops along with the fan.
remove the fan cover and gently press on the center of the fan until it stops or slows and see how it affects the noise being produced.

It should go without saying but I will say it, opening your PSU and turning it on for this is a VERY BAD IDEA and should not be undertaken by someone who has never done it before.

Its more likely the sound is coil whine of some sort, so a recording should be provided before we suggest such drastic and possibly dangerous measures.

i've done it on every variety of power supplies for at least 20 years now and have never run into any sort of "dangerous" situation since wires and contacts are always tucked beneath the intake fan.

the worst outcome would be voiding any possible warranty by breaking a seal or other sort of manufacturer sticker.
but anyone building and dealing with personal computers should understand the involved warranty policies before attempting anything.

if someone is dumb enough to reach in and touch exposed circuits, contacts, or wires while a component is powered on then they obviously shouldn't be attempting to build or diagnose a system themselves anyway.

YOU have been doing it, and I would trust YOU to do it all day long. You don't know this person from Adam. First off yes they would be voiding the warranty on a brand new PSU that may well be defective and can be returned. That is unless its been tampered with. Secondly again, there are things that can be accidentally touched while the PSU is on that can be very dangerous. They don't put those "don't tamper" stickers on there for their health.

So again, telling someone new to the forum to go start opening a brand new PSU to try and stop the fan to diagnose the problem is irresponsible advice. But we have discussed it now and thats that.

@OttoVonHuttu don't open the PSU, record the sound for us and come back with that and we can work from there. There is no reason to ruin the warranty on a piece of hardware diagnosing it.

I would like to point out that according to Tom's review of this model it is not exactly the most silent PSU out there. What you are experiencing might be just a normal noise level for this model.
The cooling fan is by Hong Hua and uses a double ball-bearing, so it will last for a long time, even under high operating temperatures. DBB fans are considered of higher quality than FDB ones, but are also more noisy and more expensive.

Well is it normal that the psu is louder than the rest of the entire system?
Please note that I'm not claiming it has to be normal noise level for this PSU - it may have faulty fan after all. Just pointing out facts you might not be aware and that may be important. (I did listened to your video and don't hear any strange sounds, but that of course means nothing)

Btw, if your question is "can a single fan be louder then 6-7 other fans together" - I bet you never heard Cooler Master JetFlo running at full speed ;)

I've built like 7 pc's so far, mostly for relatives and friends, and this is the first time that a new psu has made so much noise. My friend's pc that I built recently that was a really budget build and didn't even have as loud of a psu as this one. And I've opened 2 psus to clean them, so far. If you ppl think that RMA is the solution I can go with that even though it sucks. I can try to get the money back and buy some other brand.

I would RMA it, hopefully the new one doesn't sound like that. If it does sell it on eBay and get a different brand (or return it if possible).
