My friend got a CS750M for a system with no GPU and two HDD's. It killed his entire rig...

Wow, seriously? I think we should consider moving the Corsair CS and CX series to Tier 4 or 5. There should be a mass recall on those models. Corsair should offer HX, TX, and RM models as replacements.

Either that or his motherboard was defective and managed to kill the whole system. The PSU was tested and worked fine in several other PC's... We can't tell which did which. Supposedly someone saw smoke from the PSU, but I didn't

Update -

New units announced.

FSP
FSP has just announced the Hydro G series of units. Sadly, it's not gonna be like some of those old Koolance units from 2001 - 2007, like this one, but named "Hydro G" in honor of the Fluid Dynamic Bearing fan (why?) used in their new units. Possibly a first for FSP if i'm correct.

All wattaged (650w, 750w and 850w) will use server grade copper heatpipes to cool the motherboard down, as well as the entire casing being designed for airflow. Reminds me of some old Zalman units with those heatpipes. Additionally, there are also customizabe logo stickers, and from what i've seen, they've use "gamer" colors Red and Green and seem to make fun off Corsair's Tramp stamp logo and MSi's gaming dragon (again, why?). Expect to see a few more details at Computex this year.

RaidMax
Raidmax has made yet another "budget friendly" PSU under the RX line. With amazing features, such as unsleeved cables and a horrific 115v / 230v switch (in 2015 I might add)! Expect a Tier 5 grouping for this one.

Opinion time!
I may soon split the tiers for their own little pages to make the list a bit tidier. What do you guys think?

Next update will be around the end of Computex 2015 i.e. June 2nd - June 6th.

IMHO, FSP has been hit or miss. I really hope the new series is decent, but it will take a competent technical review to let us know. Diablotek included some fancy-sounding cooling features on one of their big (1050W?) units, but Jonnyguru's review of it was amusing (and sad too; I think that's the one that fried some of their equipment) as it couldn't do more than half that.
Allowing that the Antec VP line is good, despite lacking PFC and thus possessing a voltage switch, [strike]Choke[/strike]RaidMax deserves the chance to also be reviewed, but I certainly won't hold my breath (or recommend one) until then. I don't think you can fairly put it in Tier-5 unless it's been reviewed and exposed as sewage, but it wouldn't belong any higher than Tier-4 either until then.

Please help me decide between the Cooler Master V550S (semi modular) and the XFX XTR 550.

I've read that the XFX can get quite loud under full load while the Cooler Master stays quiet but that would be assuming that here is no coil whine. The Cooler Master would be around 10€ cheaper for me.

I'm building in the Cooler Master Silencio 352 micro-ATX case where the compact form factor of the v550s is a plus but the flat cables on the XFX XTR are also very nice I think.

According to reviews the Cooler Master is based on Enhance and the XFX on Seasonic, both seem to do very well in reviews.

I would be very thankful if someone here could tell me which one to get because I really can't decide.

Thanks in advance.

650W review on HardWare secrets (Silver) and LegitReviews
1000W on JG(8.6), KG(7.5), and TechPowerUp(8.2) (as well as Lab501 in Romanian)

800W on PCAxe [in Croatian],

Teapo caps primary, Capxon secondary, although JG claimed mix Teapo and Capxon on the secondary.

not a chance. still rated for 30c. these words from oklahoma wolf say it all: "these cost $119.99 at Newegg at the moment. Value was a big problem for the CX750M, and the story is much the same for this one. Rosewill and XFX have competing models for twenty bucks less. EVGA has one for fifteen less. And lookie there... Thermaltake's come in to wreck the party again with an 80 Plus Gold unit for ten dollars less. Heck, even the CS850M doesn't compete that well at this price, and it's obviously a better product than this one."

Not a chance in any tier above Tier 3, 2B at most. I would never go with a CX unit, and unless Corsair switched their OEM for that line to something like Seasonic or Super Flower, I wouldn't touch one.

a psu? choose based on your builds power needs of course. also take into consideration price and availablity.

the tier 2b thing was kind of pointless. to be honest a division in tier 3 (tier 3a/tier 3b) would make more sense. things like the RM, fortress, revolution X't, and power zone could be tier 3a and everything that's really bad at max capacity or rated for 30c tier 3b. cwt is fine as an OEM, the platform is just really low end.

wolf seems to have a few marbles missing on the CX850M (Bronze doesn't have a 10% requirement). Unit was staring at a Silver rating until test 5, which was not 100% load, but did miss Wolf's 97% load by 0.137%, which is better than the XFX Core 850's actual 100% load results.

The load regulation on the 12v is not impressive. It survived to 47C but is only rated for 30C, which is horrid. 30C is 86F, which is open window weather for many.

It's impossible for this unit to be Tier 1. it performs worse for more money than Tier 1 units.

I'd like to compare it to the EVGA SuperNova B2 850W, but I don't see a review for it. Perhaps we can request it of one of the reputable reviewers that peruse the area?

Trying to find a Tier 2 - 850 Bronze unit to compare it to, all I'm seeing is Seasonics to compare it to, so I'll have to use a second Seasonic.

Seasonic M12 II Evo blows it out of the water, and it's a Tier 2 (why? Why is that unit a Tier 2?)

Antec HCG 850M blows it out of the water, and it's a tier 2.

Corsair's CX850 is exactly where it belongs.

Isn't the 850w B2 the same Golden green platform as the G2, just pared down and semi-modular instead of modular? I'd think aside from modularity they'd be pretty similar in testing. Probably not AS good, but considering the relatively excellent results of the 750w B2, I'd be inclined to think the 850w model would be fairly similar.

Completely off topic(but I can't help myself). I noticed that you type in regular font instead of bold.

Actually related to this thread.

Still don't trust the CX series. As mentioned above, it made Bronze, but only just(if I am reading right so late at night). Plus, rated at 30 degrees? That's pretty damn close to room temp in California(without A/C)...

He works for Corsair so he can't review it. And he not only works for Corsair, he's the marketing manager. That's why he quit doing reviews several years ago. To maintain the impartiality of his site.

I'm not really sure how a unit that scored 8/10 did really well in testing? That's pretty low and plenty low enough for tier 3. I would put units that score 10/10 in performance and build quality ( maybe 9.7/9.8 and up )in tier 1 and 9/10 in those areas in tier 2. Then say 7-9/10 in tier 3 and so on. I don't even pay attention to the value or functionality ratings unless the functionality is really off for some reason like the cables are too short. Value changes over time and can be subjective and based on location.
