I feel like those turn-on spikes are difficult to fix without making design changes that would be a pain in the rear.

The only answer I ever heard of for initial activation spiking was the 'soft-on' approach used by high-end stereo equipment. Unfortunately, ppl who push the power button on a pc cannot wait 3 seconds for power up to boot. Until that happens, or someone figures out another answer, ppl are just going to have to deal with input rush.

Hello,

OuterVision® Power Supply Calculator says that 650W is enough for now and for future upgrades.

It has been very challenging to find Tier 1 and Tier 2 PSUs in my country at a reasonable price (when available). Therefore, I have selected a few options that are currently available in the local market and within my budget. Any recommendation ?

- Corsair 650W RMX Modular Series RM650X 80 PLUS Gold (CP-9020091-WW)
- Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 650W Gold Full Modular (PS-TPG-0650FPCGUS-R)
- XFX 750W Pro Series XXX Edition ATX12V v2.2 P1-750X-XXB9 80 PLUS Bronze (P1-750X-XXB9)
- EVGA 750W SuperNOVA NEX ATX12V 110-B1-0750-VR 80 PLUS Bronze

I know that 750W is a bit overkill, but these ones are at at a reasonable price (when compared to others).

Thank you !

I have a Corsair HX520W on another computer and it is working fine the last 5y or more. So, the RMX650 was my first option also. However all these reviews and tiers have brought some doubts, mainly because the RMX 650W is not clearly classified on any Tier, while this XFX is, if my interpretation is correct, is Tier 1. Also, the TT RGB are also not classified yet, although I had seen good reviews. Am I interpreting correctly the Tier stuff ? Thank you.

The RMx series are CWT platforms and it will be similar to this:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&file=print&reid=452

They gave the RM1000x a perfect 10 and the RM750x got a 9.8. Not bad and the RM650x is probably right up there. The RM x/I are probably Corsairs best PSUs since the AXi series.

From the same site the Thermaltake got 8.8:

The closest to the XFX I could find was the 650W version but it scored an 8:

And the EVGA got an 8.5:

As said the best on that list is the Corsair. While Not every model will be listed in the Teir list that list is not the end all be all but you can normally get a good idea of how well a series does even if only one model is listed as the series normally is the same platform across wattages.

Missed the B1 but yea that would be the worst in the list.

And I use it only as a baseline and try to use the same reviewer for consistency. Never said it was what should determine the tier as there should always be more to that than just one reviewer but it is easier to show the value of a product if you use all the same reviewer with the same testing methodology across the selections instead of using one from Jonny, one from Toms etc.

However would you disagree with those scores in terms of where each unit lays? I would say they are pretty spot on.

Yes, I would still consider the EVGA NEX G1 lower quality than the others, due to the poor voltage regulation and ripple filtering, as well as the lower-quality capacitors.

I like JGs reviews, a little overwhelming at times with the details, but all in all a good balance. The scoring is my only issue. It's one of those things where the reader really needs to read the whole review on any particular psu. Jonny will knock of ½ points here and there for things like an outdated connector or garish paint job or some cables being short. So an otherwise perfect 10 psu comes out with a non perfect score. And ppl skip the review and read just the final score. Too bad for them, his reviews are always quite thoroughly entertaining and insightful.

The tier list, JGs reviews, everyone else's reviews, even the disastrous newegg/amazon user feedback are nothing but tools, and should be used as such, they aren't gospel or the absolute word. But consideration and common sense should play a large role in psu selection. Those with an matx/mITX case probably don't care if power cables are short, those with full towers should be planning on cable extensions.

The Newegg/Amazon ones are the worst as there is too much garbage in them. However I love when people use them as I can easily find a few to pick them apart with.

That said, the points knocked off for "silly" things makes sense. If I bought an AX1500i I would expect everything to be pretty much perfect. However I, as a PC enthusiast, also know that the most important part of a PSU is how it performs, not the looks so I understand why it is stupid to pull points for it.

Then again plenty of people want looks too. How many people ask for a good tier PSU in white?

IMO Jonnyguru reviews are the least overwhelming when it comes to details. Reading a Tomshardware or Techpowerup teardown just leaves you like "what on earth is he talking about" for half the stuff.

Also, they don't score aesthetics anymore on Jonnyguru.

No. The Vengeance Series is not the VS Series.

The Vengeance Series use CWT (Channel Well Technology) as the OEM (you can see the use of the classic CWT fan grill). The new VS Series models use HEC as the OEM.

That VS looks like a piece of cheese.
Slightly OT, but I've recently noticed that none of the PSU OEMs we know seem to make PSUs for Ham radio rigs. Those tend to be in the 30A-40A range, with user-settable voltage (typically 13.8V), and cost $150-$250 for that level of capacity. Ripple is much lower than the ATX spec, but not better than actual measured results of "better" (i.e. tier 1-2) PSUs.

Is the EVGA SuperNOVA G3 likely to be 'tier 1'?

I'm trying to choose between the G3, G2 and GS, which are all available for a very similar price (£78-£83)

It should be right up there. Definitely better than G2 and GS.

... checked the Jonnyguru review of the 750W version. 0.12% regulation in the cold box, 0.18% in the hot box. 9mV ripple at worst. Just ridiculously good performance.

I've gone for it 😉

hi, i am looking for a good psu for this setup:

Pentium g4560 (i will upgrade to 7'th gen i5 later)
GTX 1060
8GB Hyperx 2133MHz (16GB in future)
MSI h110m pro vh
corsair spec-01

currently i am thinking about corsair VS550 it cheap and won't break my budget, it's a budget gaming pc. so i want a better PSU than this one because many people suggested me that this PSU is not good. so which PSU's do you recommend for this setup?
